"Going to Vegas for first time" |
I was invited to join a girlfriend on her next trip to Vegas which is this month. She gambles and has the room comped so I just have to pay for my flight, food and entertainment. We are going for a week, starting the 22nd and staying half the time at Ceasar's and the rest of the time at Paris. She picked Ceasar's as she knows that I'm not much of a gambler and I want to spend some time at a nice pool. Most of my vacations lately have been to all inclusives so I haven't had to worry about where to eat or entertainment. So far we have purchased tickets to Mystere for Sunday night. I had been told by many people that it would be cheaper to get tickets online before you leave. The amusing part is this is my first cirq show and I'm going to USA to see a show created by Canadians. I signed up for onespount Vegas as soon as I decided to go and got tickets for cocktail flair show at Circus Circus that includes 5 drinks also for both of us for $19. I was wondering if anyone would have recomendations for food. I would love to try food that I can't get here(Canada) and if I'm going to eat at a chain, I would prefer to try something new i.e. not McDonalds. I would like to keep the cost of food reasonable and maybe only go out for one really nice dinner during my stay.So if someone has a suggestion for one nice place, I would also appreciate that. I already have a budget for shopping - the amount I can legally bring back after a week away. There are 3 discount malls and I'm going to go to all of them. I'm not a big gambler so discount shopping is where I will spend more time. Are there still penny slot machines? What is the minimum you can gamble and still get drinks served to you? I was considering gambling only when I wanted to get drinks - how much and hour at slots do you think I would need to spend an hour to keep the drinks coming? Are there any peeps who live in the ares?

Thanks for the suggestions. My girlfriend is not going to spend that much time with me but she is going to spend one day walking the strip and showing me the attractions at each hotel. We are also going to Fremont Street one weekend night to see the lights. It was one of the two things I really wanted to see along with fountains of Bellagio - then discovered that Paris is right across the street from it.

Walk the Strip. Walk the Strip at night. Walk the Strip at night while carrying pepper spray and do not take your hands off your purse. If you see an interesting-looking convention going on at any facility, do not decide attend until you have read every last bit of fine print three times. Use the amusement park rides. Why not? Most casinos will bring you drinks if you're gambling at 'a steady rate' or if you're sitting with a friend who's playing. (Some areas will insist you use a machine yourself or leave, but it takes a jerk of a floor boss. You will see people sleeping at machines. You may cry.) 'A steady pace' is your responsibility to keep under control. The slots spin fast. It's a good idea to have a count between button pushes so you don't get caught up in the pace of the reels. But generally, as long as you're putting up play time (or with someone else who is), no matter how fast or slow, someone will serve you. Penny slots are everywhere. However, pretty much all of them are rigged with multiple lines so you'll have to cover everything or lose out on the one winning combo, and then there's the X Credits Per Line option. A penny slot can cost you ten dollars a push without even trying. (And yes, there are people who gamble one penny on one line, grim spin after grim spin. They get drinks too -- at least in A.C.) If anyone tries to sell you a multi-casino buffet ticket, run for your life. No -- hit them in the stomach and then run for your life. (The nausea you save may be someone else's.) Don't be any more afraid to eat outside the casino than you would be inside. Ignore the facility's own propaganda -- get independent reviews on everything. See Penn & Teller. Some pools are topless. Make sure you know which before you attend. Comparison-shop the online prices against anything you might get at the discount malls. Vegas is all about making things sound good when they really aren't. Leave the Strip and malls behind. The city has some unusual stores about, and given the I-Need-Money-Now nature of the central enterprise, it may be the pawnshop capital of the world. You can do the strangest shopping of your life in Las Vegas -- at least until you hit New York. "The people! The -- things..." "The 'things' are also people." "The people! The -- other people..."

5. "RE: Keep in mind:" |
My SIL who does gamble told me to stay away from penny slots and look for 2 or 3 'bangers' as she said they were a. cheaper in long run and b. more likely to pay out. Spend pennies, win pennies but I'm not looking to win - just spend some time and get a couple of drinks.I'm guessing this means quarter machines that go at fifty or seventy-five cents a spin. You'll have less winners, but they may in fact pay more if you do hit. I read online that the topless pools do not insist on women going topless and women at those tend to get in free. I have been to many beaches and it would not bother me plus the guys would be paying more attention to the other women. True on both of the first counts: it's just that some people do get ambushed on their initial visit, and reactions really do vary. A warning is appropriate until you know the local comfort level. Thanks for the suggestion on the discount mall. I know that many (really most) of the stores merchandise is not discounted at all and may be of inferior quality. Buyer beware is only more adept at an outdoor flea market and you tend to believe the tags as you 'know' the store name. Be especially careful of stores inside the casinos. The goal there is frequently 'You just had a big hit? Let's see how much of that we can take from you.' Luxury items you'd never spend a thousand dollars for, but since you just happen to have a 'free' thousand dollars in your purse... Oh -- one extra warning on the shopping. There's at least one pawnshop hosting a reality show in the area, and other places like to have series in and out as the cash flow provides. Look for 'walk in and your image is ours forever' signs before you go inside.

I met up with my mother (who goes several times a year), my sister coming in from Australia and my brother who Las Vegas is the antithesis of everything he believes in.We (my brother and I, that is) had the most fun at the pinball hall of fame http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Attraction_Review-g45963-d620854-Reviews-Pinball_Hall_of_Fame-Las_Vegas_Nevada.html It's not much to look at from the outside, but we had a blast. The owners donate huge sums of money to local charities. We were also impressed with the Las Vegas Springs Preserve http://www.springspreserve.org/. A very nice break from the bells, whistles and lights. The Atomic musuem http://www.nationalatomictestingmuseum.org/ Was very interesting, but very content dense. You can't do it justice to try to see it all in one afternoon. I think the gift shop should have had mushroom cloud salt and pepper shakers, but no such luck. We saw Absinthe which was a bit crude, but really good. I got dragged to the Holly Madison peep show (my brother begged off - smart). It was really, really, really dumb. Beyond dumb. I am glad I did not have to pay for my ticket, but I want those 2 hours of my life back.

LAST EDITED ON 08-06-12 AT 09:22 AM (EST)You can get cheap tickets for shows on the same day of the show. Granted they are not the top acts, but good ones. There is a kiosk across the street from Ceasar's (not the real Ceasar's Palace -he never lived there, fyi) at Bill's. Which brings me to Bill's; they have cheap drinks and take in "Fat Elvis" show in the afternoon. Best place to get free drinks that we have found is the sports book at the Bellagio. Most sports books just give you a free drink ticket, but at the Bellagio with a bet there you can sit and watch games all day if you want and drink for free. Depending on what games are on will make a difference on how busy the waitress is, but the last time we were there we placed one small bet on a basketball game and watched it for a while and the waitress served us about 6 top shelf drinks each (tip of course). There isn't too much "cheap" food on The Strip. You can get massive quantities at a pretty good price, but the inexpensive food is going to be on Freemont St. The buffets on the strip are awesome if you really like to eat. I believe Harrah's (Harrah's, Flamingo, Paris, Ceasar's, Rio, Planet Hollywood) still have a 24 hour buffet pass for about $40 where you can go to any of their buffets (a couple exclusions) as often as you like if you want to pig out one day. Our best was 4 and I was miserable, but it was a good miserable. Vegas is a culinary Mecca, don't worry about finding something different, it is around every corner. I think Emeril's Stadium (Palazzo)has some good appetizer specials in the afternoon/happy hour. If you have a car drive out to Hoover Dam (or they have bus tours for not too bad of price), it's a good way to kill some time and it is impressive. Wear comfortable shoes. You will be amazed on how flipping big the place is and how much you have to walk. Use the bus on Las Vegas Blvd. It costs about $7/day and runs frequently and stops at all the resorts. We never have to wait more than 10 minutes, and it is a great way to get downtown. They stop by "Pawn Stars" pawn shop too, which is close to downtown on Las Vegas Blvd. You can walk the strip and "people watch", but what we like to do is sit outside in Margaritaville (north corner of the Flamingo) and let the weirdos walk by us. Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. -Ronald Reagan

He's a fun way to spend a little time in the afternoon for sure, especially if you are with people who can embrace the cheesiness.

I was just in Vegas this past weekend. I've been many times before but did something for the first time.Got on stage at a hypnotist show. (Anthony Cools at Paris). It was fabulous fun -- extremely non-PG13 language and content but no clothing was removed -- I knew what was going on the entire time but basically had the attitude -- "sure, why not do that?" (and I never did get her name...) And as for the details -- I'm evoking the "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" rule. I also stopped at the "Pawn Stars" shop. It's much smaller than it looks like on the show & none of the main characters were there (it was Sunday) -- the place was very crowded with site-seers and most of what was selling was souvenir kitsch. If you want to go, 20-30 min. would be plenty. As others have said, there are plenty of penny slots -- you can play multiple lines and multiple "credits" to take you well over a dollar pull. But most can be just fine at around 25c. As long as you're there, pretty much, you'll be able to get drinks just fine. Join the casino player's club -- and most of the clubs along the strip are connected so you'll only need to sign up once. Besides earning credits for gambling, you get discounts for meals & access to a "VIP" line. It's free, so the only thing you risk is giving up a name and contact info. If you're lucky, you'll fly in to the new Terminal 3 at McClarion Airport -- fantastic! Have fun! Official Left Coast Ancillary

I looked more carefully at the small print on my ticket. I'm not going to Terminal 3. I'm flying into and out of Terminal 2.

I think my friend has two for one coupon for that show. Even though going for one week, it appears our time is filling up. I just purchased some tickets for the Beatles show. We meet yesterday and went over our schedule. Did you know that Fat Elvis has 3 different shows - and we need to see them all. ;)

It appears there are two Beatles shows. I'm going to the one called the Beatle Show at Saxe Theater. So far only one cirque show booked - Mystere.
