SilverStar 6205 desperate attention whore postings DAW Level: "Playboy Centerfold" 03-24-05, 11:46 AM (EST) "NBC's The Office" I love the original BBC version so much and I am very skeptical that a US version will be able to live up to it, but I am going to give it a shot if only because of Steve Carell. He was always hilarious on The Daily Show and I am curious to see what he can do with the character of David Brent. Show premieres tonight at 9:30 after The Apprentice. Syren? she awesome. IMO, it paled in comparison to the BBC version, but that was to be expected. I giggled quite a few times, but it just didn't have the hilarious tension that the original possesed that made it so funny. I'm glad they are going to skew off in their own direction because trying to copy the brilliance of the BBC version would be near impossible. As with any new show I watch, I will give it a few more episodes before I make my decision on whether to continue watching or not. "RE: NBC's The Office" I tried to watch as if I'd never seen the BBC show, and it certainly had a better script (since it is roughly the same Gervais script) than 95% of the sitcoms on right now. I didn't like it as much as the British version but I didn't hate it, either. Let's face it, the Totally Obnoxious Manager character is well-suited to an American, when you think about it. I thought the guy was pretty good, particularly since he didn't just try to be Ricky Gervais but read the lines in his own interpretation. OK, it wasn't awful like the Americanized Coupling, which I LOVE. I think the aura of Ricky Gervais hangs over the show. It's a star vehicle. Gervais is a star. This guy isn't. His timing was just off on a couple of the bits (the practical joke on the receptionist, for example) but he nailed the speaker phone call bit! For comparison's sake, imagine someone trying to do Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm. OK, bad example since Larry David is, well, Larry David, but Gerais is David Brent. Maybe once they start shooting original scripts.... You might get a few chuckles out of it instead of being disappointed and comparing it to the BBC version. Then you watch the BBC to see how it's really supposed to be done!
