1. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
My seasons:
Loved 'Em

1. Cook Islands - I loved the whole underdog story plotline, and it was definitely a very diverse cast, not only in terms of the racial casting but the personalities were all over the place. There were villains, sweethearts, bossies....everything.
2. Panama - Incredibly close second, it's practically a tie between these two. I loved the introduction of Exile Island, the casting was great, and I loved the way the boot order worked out. I loved watching the incredibly dysfunctional Casaya somehow manage to win challenge after challenge. All in all a very satisfying season and I wouldn't have changed a thing about it if I could.
3. Guatemala - Yet another very good season, it has my all-time favorite cast overall, I didn't dislike anybody in Guatemala and I thought it was a very interesting season. The only problem I had was the Staph/Booby twist at the beginning but other than that, a superb season.
4. Pearl Islands - Another one of my favorite seasons. At first I didn't remember anything about it, but after watching the DVD's once I got them, I remembered it all! Definitely a very unique game, unlike any other season. I loved the Sandra-Christa-Rupert alliance, and as much as I hated Lil and Burton being brought back, it definitely made the game a whole lot different than it would have been otherwise.
5. Australia - I loved Australia because the game was still new enough for there to be new things going on, but old enough for people to know what the hell they were doing after the first season. Another great cast as well.
6. Borneo - The original season, you have to love it. Sue's snake-and-rat speech, the mud volcano...the game was definitely a lot more interesting, and I enjoyed the fact that they didn't put spend half of the episode talking about the vote back then. I liked seeing more of the tribal life.

Liked 'Em

7. Palau - I really liked Palau a lot, it had a great cast, and the way the whole thing went down with the Ulong tribe losing every challenge was absolutely unbelievable. It had some of my favorite castaways of all-time (Janu, Jenn) but the only problem I had was the final two...it was horrible. Katie was a wench, although I did like her for drama purposes, and I just couldn't stand Tom who just had to win every stinking challenge.
8. All-Stars - There are a lot of people who hated All-Stars, but I liked it a lot. I liked seeing the familiar faces and having them in a different context. I thought it was incredibly petty of the jury to vote for Amber to win when clearly the Robfadda was more deserving. It was pathetic to see these "experienced" players voting so subjectively, but aside from the horrible ending the rest of the season was entertaining to watch, in my opinion.

The Blah Seasons

9. Vanuatu - I don't really remember much about this except that the older people made it further, which I hated. The Final 3 was absolutely horrendous, I hated them all, and the only redeeming qualities this season had were Ami, Julie, and Eliza. Period.
10. Marquesas - Not a memorable season at all, for me at least. The two things I remember are that Neleh smuggled a mint back to camp in her mouth, and Pappy pulled the purple rock. Other than that? Don't remember a thing.
11. Amazon - Horrible cast. And with a horrible cast, it's impossible to have a compelling storyline.
12. Thailand - Same as above, only an even more pathetic cast. The only interesting person was the Shii-Devil and she didn't even make it to the jury.
13. Africa - YAWN. I literally remember nothing about this season except Lindsey saying she had cramps in the first episode. The only person I liked was Kim Powers, and she isn't as entertaining as Shii Ann. Last place.

My Winners:

1. Aras Baskauskas - Played a great game, had a lot of control while still remaining likable. My all-time favorite male survivor.
2. Sandra Diaz-Twine - She was a master at the under-the-radar game, only unlike Tina Wesson, I also found her to be funny and entertaining to watch while she did it. I also loved her "as long as it ain't me" strategy that went along with her UTRness.
3. Yul Kwon - Called the shots the entire game. I don't need to say much more, do I?
4. Tina Wesson - Very masterfully played the game, I wouldn't call it "coattail-riding" although some people would. I think she did a great job of being friends with everybody and making sure to put herself in a good position the entire game.
5. Danni Boatwright - I really liked her, she was one of my season favorites. She played a good game and I liked how she managed to stay in the game despite being in danger around the Final 6.
6. Ethan Zohn - Don't really remember much about his gameplay, since I pretty much slept through all of Africa, although I do remember he was good.
7. Richard Hatch - Wasn't that great, now that I think about it. He didn't really have to work to win, it was in the bag.
8. Jenna Morasca - Don't remember anything about how she played, but I do like her.
9. Amber Mariano - One word - coattails.
10. Brian Heidik - See Richard Hatch, only he wasn't the original pwner.
11. Chris Daugherty - Hated him. Although I will give some credit where credit is due, with his beating the odds against the girls alliance.
12. Vecepia Towery - I cannot remember a single thing she did except say "This is too. Much. Drama."
13. Tom Westman - One of my least favorite Survivors of all time. Cocky, know-it-all, "I'm too good for you" attitude. Plus ugly as hell, equals not good.

Yay for too much elaboration. Oh well.

4. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
LAST EDITED ON 12-20-06 AT 03:47 AM (EST)

I am going to have to post my seasons and winners separate or this will get too long. As usual, I have too much to say. It is almost sad to have to be doing this list again, but at least I have rewatched most the seasons by now and have a better memory of all of them.

1. Cook Islands S13- The best! Maybe short on laughs and surprises, but when I watch any reality TV, I want to see likable people do well. And that is what I got this season. The Aitu4 are 4 of my favorite survivors all time. Watching them overcome a terrible turn at the mutiny to gain control of the game and last to the end, together, was awesome. Yul's control over the game, and Ozzy's survival skills and challenge studdery gave us two very deserving winners when we are typically lucky to get one. The best F2 ever, even if an F3, and the best jury ever, surprisingly. Every jury member congratulated the F3 and virtually no hypocrisy or grandstanding! Instead, bonafide, introspective questions. I will remember Yul's mastery, Ozzy taunting Raro, Becky's loyalty, and Sundra's beauty for a long time.
2. All-Stars S8- Lots of bad things you can say, including preshow alliances, the early targeting of the winners, two all-stars leaving the show, and the worst jury ever, BUT, for entertainment value, this season was among the best. Since we knew all the castaways, time didn't need to be wasted getting to know people. It was all game play. The conditions were BRUTAL. Rob M was hilarious and dominant like no one before him, and Chapera was one of the strongest tribes and definitely the most fun loving. A ridiculous bitter jury stole the win from Rob, but Amber was much more deserving than people give her credit for. And I liked the romance. It wasn't a "shomance." It was real. They are married. That is as real as it gets, people.
3. Australia S2- Very likable cast with tremendously likable tribe in Kucha. Good if somewhat tragic storyline of the stronger Kucha falling prey to the petulant Ogakor after Mike falls into the fire. Colby betraying the villian, Jerri, is still an all-time great moment, and great F2 with Colby and Tina. Also, very tough conditions that led to castaways actually starving.
4. Palau S10- After the horrible vote-out on the 1st day, loved it. Koror's surprising winning streak was amazing, and Ulong's utter destruction before the merge is still a unique event in Survivor history. Stephanie's trials on the doomed Ulong made a her a fan favorite. Tom dominated postmerge like few before him with the strategic help of Ian and Katie. With their protection and key IC wins, he became just the 2nd tribe leader to ever win Survivor (Brian). This season also had the best F6 of all time, not counting All-Stars, and one of the hottest Survivor women in Jenn Lyons.
5. Exile Island S12- You had good cast here with the whacky Casayans against the more straight lace LaMina. The Casayans somehow dominated in challenges, which included some great ones, to gain the power postmerge and stuck together. As much as anything out of fear of Terry, who just wouldn't go away. Watching Terry dominate challenges and frustrate Casaya was great TV. The Casayans eventually picked each other off, until two late IC losses cost Terry the game, leading to a deserving win by Aras.
6. Amazon S6- For comedy, this was the best season. Rob C was hilarious. The comments of the "cute girls" were pathetic to the point of hilarity. And the dichotomy of the determined women vs. the libido driven men was also used for comedic effect. Rob C was a pioneer of sorts in his behind the scenes manipulation of the vote, and his willingness to flip to whatever side was better for him. An F3 loss and an idiotic move by his sidekick, Matt, left him out of the F2 and gave us a surprising winner in Jenna M.
7. Africa S3- Brutal conditions. Either this season or All-Stars would be the toughest conditions on Survivor. First ever tribal switch which threw people for a loop and caused some interesting strategy to be played. Led to the downfall of Silas and the young brats. Lex somewhat dominated the season before 2 straight IC wins by Kim handed Ethan the title.
8. Guatamala S11- No spectacular characters or craziness, unless you count Judd's loudmouth directness, but all around athletic and solid cast. Started well with the jungle trek and Steph and BJ's reintroduction to the game, which was a good idea, to me. After an early tribal switch the writing was on the wall once the ultra-athletic Nakum started to eat its own. The best part of the season was when the Axis of Evil was demolished by Rafe and Steph. The HII was introduced but didn't come to much. Rafe and Steph's foolishness at the end gave us our most attractive winner in the former Miss Kansas, Danni Boatwright. That is two pageant winners to win Survivor. Something is wrong with that, obviously.
9. Thailand S5- Mostly remembered for Shi Ann, Brian, and the late merge. Cast was somewhat sad except for some great characters on Sook Jai, including Robb, Shi Ann, and the ultra-hot Erin. Sook Jai self-destructed once it started voting out its strongest, leading to a tie at the faux-merge. Then, in one of the most important challenges in Survivor history, Brian stayed underwater long enough to seal Sook Jai's fate and give the old tribe the majority. It was a clinic by Brian after that. Second worst jury in Survivor history with some bitter jerks.
10. Vanuatu S9- This season gets moved up after a second viewing. The men were still completely inept as Chris gathered the couch potatoes to vote out the jocks, only to get completely played by the women anyway. But I had underestimated the women, who actually had the most attractive tribe in Survivor history. The tomboys teamed with Chris and Eliza to seize the power in the game in one of the most remembered episodes ever. Had one of the most impressive and villianous women in Ami. Like later in Guatamala, the tag-along had an easy victory after a predictable F3 win.
11. Pearl Islands S7- One of the best seasons premerge as we saw the Morgan tribe struggle and then comeback after the dominant Drake tribe decided to throw a challenge. Had very tough conditions which led to the first quitter in Osten. Had some great team challenges and two all-time characters in Rupert and JFP. Season took a turn for the worse when the Outcasts were brought back, including Mr.Throw-a-challenge himself, Burton, and Miss Insufferable- Lil. Though tied at merge, Morgan was doomed when Lil turned against them and gave the power to Drake. After that, it was all backstabbing and lying with no one staying loyal to anyone, degenerating to the survival of the weakest, which eventually gave us the weakest F4 of all time, and then the least deserving and most unlikable F2 ever.
12. Marquesas S4- Introduced Rob M who pretty much carried the season until his boot immediately post merge. Also had one of Survivor's hottest women in Sarah Jones. Rotu was solidly in control until a popularity challenge exposed the Rotu4's alliance and led to their dismantling. This was great TV at the time, until that left us with a mostly unlikable F5. Kathy O was pretty much the only hope the season had until she inexplicably lost in F3 to Neleh and Vecepia, leaving us with maybe a slightly more likable but even less deserving F2 than PI.
13. Borneo- Yeah, after rewatching the entire thing, I put Season 1 dead last. Dirty season with sloppy editing and hosting by Jeff. People actually ate rats? That doesn't make good TV to me. And too many people that seemed to have no clue why they were there. People had no idea how to play the game, especially on the Pagong side, whose idiocy postmerge left their name infamous. Has there ever been a more unlikable F5 than Hatch, Sue, Rudy, Kelly W and Sean? I don't think so. These people cared nothing about one another and couldn't wait to get home. That doesn't inspire people. Survivor has come a LONG way since this.

Um... Steph was a charter member of the 'alliance of evil'. Steph, Judd and Jamie were the evil ones. Rafe, Lydia and Cindy were the nice ones.

Gee, and she wonders why she's despised by so many -_-

Cindy was nice? To who? Cindy and Judd were attached at the hip.
Yes, Steph was a charter member; however, she still was the prime destroyer of that alliance with Rafe's encouragement and assistance. Most alliances get destroyed by someone from within the alliance.

LAST EDITED ON 12-18-06 AT 07:39 PM (EST)

Seasons:

1) Cook Island. Very good cast; great challenges, and most of the twists worked. What really made the season stand out was the mutiny. Made Aitu the first team I really wanted to see win. (Should thank Candice and Jonathan for switching teams.) While the ending lacked drama or controversy, it had in its place players staying loyal to their alliance. And the two best players finished first and second. Think Ozzy was the best all-around challenge competitor ever.
2) Australia. Great cast and the elements really mattered.
3) Pearl Islands. Another good cast.
4) Panama/Exile Island. Same. The Exile Island twist kept it interesting. Deserving winner.
5) Guatemala. Rafe played Stephanie and then Danni played Rafe. Liked the challenges.
6) Borneo. Richard, Greg and Rudy were fun. Sue's speech. Sean's ridiculous voting strategy. Unselfconsciousness of players and novelty factor.
7) Amazon. Rob C. and Matt were fun.
8) Vanuatu. Liked the ousting of Ami's group.
9) Marquesas. Liked the ROTU4 banishment.
10) Thailand. Worth watching to see Brian manipulate his tribemates.
11) Palau. Most one sided team competitions ever. Outcome predictible and no one did anything to change it. Ian letting Tom talk him out of the game was lame.
12) Africa. Not interesting.
13) All-Stars. Dismal. Knew what the ending would be 2/3 of the way through and no one did anything to change it. Lex and Kathy blowing up Mogo-Mogo to get rid of the competition was one of the most foolish moves ever. Past winners were given no chance by teammates.

Winners:

1) Tom Westman. Didn't particularly like him but he combined strategizing and leading his tribe, providing, and strong challenge performances better than anyone else. And his tribe was the most dominant ever.
2) Yul Kwon. Helped hold together his tribe after the mutiny. Used the idol to change the game. Managed to lead without making enemies.
3) Brian Heidik. Have to give him credit for how effortless he made it look. Survivor's best actor.
4) Richard Hatch. Controlled his alliance well.
5) Aras Baskauskas. Giving him some credit for how well his dysfunctional team performed.
6) Danni Boatwright. Survived being an outcast on another tribe. Talked Rafe into keeping her when she should have been ousted then booted Rafe when it was to her advantage.
7) Tina Wesson. Influential with apparent dominant player and convinced jury she deserved to win.
8) Jenna Morasca. Won ICs when needed.
9) Amber Mariano. Rob should have won but Amber was better at challenges than giving credit for and participated in strategizing.
10) Ethan Zohn
11) Sandra Diaz-Twine
12) Chris Daugherty. Made numerous foolish moves early on but survived despite being an outcast. It was Scout and Twila who initiated the strategy to break up Ami's group.
13) Vecepia Towery. Wasn't it Neleh who instigated the Rotu4 ouster? Don't remember Vecepia doing much of anything.

>Seasons:
1-Pearl Islands - I liked the way it finished and great characters.

2-Marquesas - Rotu 4 get axed, Rob/Sean were hilarious, slow finish though.
3-Cook Islands - Good season, slow finale but two deserving winners.
4-Borneo - The original, gotta love it.

5-Palau - Dominant winner, but pretty straightforward.

6-Vanuatu - I liked the winner and the Leann boot was awesome.

7-Africa - I liked the winner, but brutal conditions.

8-Panama/Exile Island - Terry was great, disappointing final 2.

9-Australia - I didn't like that Colby didn't win.
10-Amazon - unsatisfied with the winner.

11-Guatemala - Too much Steph and a dull winner.

12-Thailand - boring, but great playing by Brian.

13-All-Stars - didn't live up to the hype, no courageous play at all

>Winners:
Brian Heidik - awesome player
Richard Hatch - looked great then, was ahead of his time
Yul Kwon - The Yulfather was pretty flawless
Tom Westman - Dominated, but the difference between the two tribes definitely helped him.
Chris Daugherty - Fought back from 6-1 down!
Sandra Diaz-Twine - UTR, but still played the game.
Vecepia Towery - Lie Sandra, but even more UTR (boring)
Ethan Zohn - I liked him, but Tom/Lex did the work.
Tina Wesson - Thanks Colby!
Danni Boatwright - Boring, but at least Steph didn't win.
Aras Baskauskas - Fortunate that the Terry freight train stopped at the right time.
Jenna Morasca - She has matured, but back then I felt bitter that this entitled, bratty, immature brat won.
Amber Mariano - Rode Rob all the way. At least Jenna had to play the game at the end.

8. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
The Seasons:

1. Pearl Islands - Still the best. As much as I wanted to choke Osten, strangle Fairplay, smack Burton, throttle Andrew, and kick the producers for allowing the Outcasts back in, this season just plain had it all.
2. Cook Islands - Maybe I don't have a good basis for comparison, since I hated the Exile Island season, but this season was far more fun to watch. Imagine a minority tribe able to Pagong a majority. Usually, you don't hear about that unless it's preceded by the words "In Soviet Russia..."
3. Guatemala - I don't think there's been a more brutal season than this one. Now is it easy to forget the cast of characters and the roles everyone played that were so atypical. It was like Survivor turned on its ear.
4. Australia - The first season I watched, and still a memorable one. I remember cheering hard for Alicia, hoping to see Rodger and Elisabeth saved, and wanting so badly to see someone, anyone, unseat Colby. And someone did.
5. Palau - This was the best season that was dominated by a single individual. Tom Westman's tribe should have been left for dead. You would have looked at the tribes and thought Ulong would run the table. Yes, someone ran the table, but it wasn't Ulong.
6. Africa - I liked this season. This alliance adapted to the situation as well as any monolithic alliance ever has. And then Mama Kim comes out of nowhere. She deserved the final two, but Ethan played a better game.
7. Marquesas - The fall of the Rotu 4 was the biggest redeeming factor of this season. Rotu owned this season almost completely, but their own arrogance kept them from covering their tracks, and it bit them. And we laughed.
8. Amazon - The original battle of the sexes turned out...well, pretty even up to the last vote, which was a wash. It showed us that those who don't study history...that means you, Alex...are doomed to repeat it.
9. Borneo - I didn't actually watch this season, but my understanding of it was that it was fun to watch, even if the people were colossal morons by and large.
10. Vanuatu - Arg. Gender-based tribes again. This season was frustrating for the first half and turned into a snoozer...until a darkhorse named Twila made it fun again.
11. Panama/Exile Island - This had the same thing going on as Vanuatu. Frustrating early on, poorly produced, a snoozer after the merge, and Terry was hardly a sympathetic character. You knew he couldn't possibly win, but the winner was still...hard to imagine.
12. All-Stars - For a bunch of All-Stars, they played like a bunch of kids out of Lord of the Flies. I didn't see this much inane drama in four years of high school. The fact that no one dared touch Rob and Amber was either ridiculous or well-played on their part. Probably both.
13. Thailand - I don't fault EPMB for experimenting. I do fault him for so many failed experiments in one season. Episode 8 of this season still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The Winners:

1. Tom Westman - He's the king. The ruler. The unbeatable. He inspired fear in the other tribe to the point where they didn't win a single immunity challenge. His tribemates had a grand total of three chances to vote him out; he was immune the rest of the game - the first time, no one wanted him out. The second time, one of his operatives cracked and the plot to oust him failed. The third time, he wasn't the target for some reason and he still pulled off a masterful vote. He's untouchable.
2. Danni Boatwright - She's pretty good herself. She pulled off what was quite possibly the biggest upset ever (her or Chris) and she did it with her head kept up high and with no one helping her. And she took on the most royal figure of Survivor at the time head-on. And she won. Big.
3. Yul Kwon - This may be a big upset as well, but his tribe's victory was an upset. His wasn't. He proved that strategy amounts to everything in Survivor. He proved that a smart, calculated person can be unbeatable. He played the game that was handed to him, and he played it like a pro.
4. Richard Hatch - He invented Survivor strategy. No one else was trying to do what he did. Everything that's seen in today's game goes back to his Machiavellian ways.
5. Tina Wesson - She was the assistant coach before Ethan defined the strategy. She aligned with two people who hated each other when the game was still somewhat personal. It's called playing to one's audience. Tina did it well.
6. Ethan Zohn - He didn't invent the assistant coach. He only perfected it. By and large, he held his own in challenges and still managed not to get a vote against him.
7. Chris Daugherty - He's the only one in the winner's circle who really should have been the first boot. But he scrambled, he worked with his situation, and went from the outhouse to the penthouse to pull what's probably the largest upset in Survivor history.
8. Vecepia Towery - Before Chris, Vecepia's win was the largest upset in Survivor history. She wasn't exciting, and she wasn't flashy. But she did the job. People made noise and dropped like flies around her. She was silent but lethal.
9. Brian Heidik - Richard Hatch invented Survivor strategy. Brian Heidik invented squat. His variation involved winning more challenges and only worked when they got rid of the largest tribal cancer in the history of the game. If he doesn't swing Helen, it all goes to shite.
10. Jenna Morasca - Yes, she won four immunity challenges. However, her strategy was as full of holes as a block of Swiss cheese. She blabbed to Dave, she washed her underwear in the drinking water, she actually gave up immunity, she whined, she fought with a baster strategist, and she aligned with Alex. I'm still not sure why Christy voted for her.
11. Sandra Diaz-Twine - As far as her social game goes, it seemed scatterbrained, but it worked. I still don't know how. Most of the great strategists have a clear course of action and an MO that can be deciphered. She spent the whole game scrambling and won because her final opponent finished 14th.
12. Aras Baskauskas - He set a Survivor record for winners. Not the one I would want to set, though - he had more votes cast against him than any other Survivor winner. He was embarrassed in challenges by a man twice his age. He was whiny, arrogant, and childish. He won because his opponent was more vile than he was.
13. Amber Brkich-Mariano - Shii Ann said she was the one calling the shots. Yeah, Becky said she made decisions too. That got her a grand total of jack-squat in the final vote. We all know who the brain of the outfit known as Romber was. She won solely because a guy with some skills thought she was attractive, and she latched onto him. That's about it.

9. "My Rankings"
1- Exile Island: It was one of the funniest seasons (Shane, Cirie, the woodberry, the fish, Courtney fighting with Shane, Bobby and the wine, Courtney singing to Bruce, etc...). It was well played, everyone tried to make strategic moves.

2- Guatemala

3-Australia

4- Cook Islands: The cast had a few stars but too many non-players, the islands were majestuous but the theme was a publicity stunt that luckily worked well. It had its funny moments (Billy, the Yul-sandwich among others).

5- Palau
6- Amazon
7- Pearl Island
8- Marquesas
9- Vanuatu
10- Borneo
11- All-Star
12- Africa
13- Thaïland

1- Danni: She had alliances with almost everyone. She was the only one to see that Rafe was playing against Stephenie and used that to infiltrate their alliance.

2- Tom: A leader that took charge and made the moves he had to. His destruction of Ulong was impressive.

3- Tina: She took over the alliance of 5 and then she decided every boot.

4- Aras: He guided a crazy alliance and knew which players to keep close to him. Terry also had used the HII to flip players so Aras was in constant danger but he didn’t let Casaya crumble.

5- Yul: He was impressive as a leader. The HII gave him too much safety but he used it well.

6- Richard: He invented the strategy.

7- Chris: He had F2 alliances with everyone and lied to everyone. He was the funniest winner.

8- Brian: He tricked everyone, he won challenges but who did he have to beat?

9- Sandra: She adapted to the flips and was determined to go on.

10- Amber: She knew who to follow.

11- Ethan: He knew who to follow.

12- Jenna: She won challenges but played like a High School Prom Queen.

13- Vee: She avoided the drama.

10. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
LAST EDITED ON 12-19-06 AT 08:48 PM (EST)

1. Borneo
The Good: First and most original season. Contains the game's (IMHO) best winner in Rich. Very memorable cast, with the only bland person being Ramona. Lots of stupidity, particularly Pagong's voting styles at F10 and F9 and the infamous alphabet strategy, but they did make the season quite entertaining.
The Bad: Extremely unlikable final 5.

2. Guatemala
The Good: Great location, a welcome change to the non-stop islands of Pearl Islands through Cook Islands. Some of the tougest challenges ever. Has my all time favorite Survivor, Cindy. Has one of the game's all time great players in Rafe, until he made one of the top 3 stupidest decisions ever by voting out Lydia. Has one of the game's most impressive wins by Danni. Except for Morgan, Brianna and Brooke, entertaining and memorable cast. Very entertaining post merge.
The Bad: WAAAAAAY too much Steph. Many of the early boots were too invisible. Overboard producer manipulation in favor of Steph.

3. Pearl Islands
The Good: Most out of control post-merge situation in Survivor history. Rupert's boot is arguably the best and most memorable in Survivor history. Great character in Rupert, although a tad overrated by producers. Extremely entertaining player in Johnny Fairplay, with his infamous grandmother lie. A lack of a true challenge whore made the game fairly even.
The Bad: Some rather dull and unmemorable people on Morgan. The Outcasts twist was arguably the most unfair twist in the game's history. Osten quitting.

4. Amazon
The Good: Like Pearl Islands, out of control post-merge. One of the game's best to never win in Rob C. Sympathetic and likable characters in Christy and Butch. Great location.
The Bad: Probably the dumbest cast in tribe history. Horrible winner. Heidi, Jenna and Alex all extremely unlikable. Matt, Christy and Butch pretty much had no strategy at all and were pretty much clueless, game wise.

5. Marquesas
The Good: Biggest powershift in the game's history. Sarah's top 5 hottest Survivor ever. Extremely entertaining Boston Rob. Fairly good location. Deserving winner, even if she is critized by many for being UTR. Kathy's one of the game's greats.
The Bad: Paschal getting purple rock'd out of the game was extremely unfair. ZOe was ultra invisible. Gabriel getting voted out by all his Rotu friends was arguably the most horrific and cruel thing I've ever seen on Survivor.

6. Australia
The Good: Great location. Extremely tough environment. Very likable tribe in Kucha. Great villain in Jerri. One of the better winners in Tina. Amber's the hottest Survivor ever.
The Bad: The Kucha's essentially gave up after the merge. After the Gabe thing, all the Keith bashing from Colby and tina after he was voted out was the most horrific and cruel thing I've ever seen on Survivor.

7. Exile Island
The Good: Most entertaining tribe ever in Casaya. Cirie's probably the most likable Survivor ever. Except for Melinda, Nick and Ruth Marie pretty much all memorable people. Shane was among the most entertaining Survivors ever.
The Bad: The HII was a huge bust and extremely unfair.

8. Africa
The Good: Um... Not sure to be honest! Not a very memorable season in this category. For the most part a good male cast, that's about it.
The Bad: Some of the stupidest gameplay ever post merge. One of the poorer winners, although atleast he's a fellow Bostonian. Poor female cast.

9. Palau
The Good: Tom was very deserving of the victory. A few memorable characters. Something we've never seen before with Koror wiping Ulong out.
The Bad: Ulong was a horrific tribe, both challenge was and in terms of the characters. Way too many useless models. Three people either quitting, or asking to be voted out. Stupidest decision in Survivor history when Ian convinced Tom to vote him out. Katie's arguably the most useless player of all time.

10. Cook Islands
The Good: F3 idea was brilliant, resulted in very deserving first and second place finishers, with the first close vote since All Stars. Jonathan is one of the most entertaining players ever.
The Bad: Way too many twists. HII was a bust again which never got used. The most invisible Survivor ever (Becky) got to third place. Way too many recruits and bland Survivors.

11. Thailand
The Good: Very deserving win by Brian
The Bad: Horrible cast, up there with Cook Islands in terms of how bad it was. F6 was all very old and unlikable. Horrible challenges.

12. All Stars
The Good: Entertaining at times. Good to see some old favorites again.
The Bad: Worst winner ever. Previous winners never had a chance. Stupidest player in Survivor history in Lex, who almost singlehandedly destroyed the entire season. Romber essentially had free ticket to F2. F7 was arguably the 7 least deserving of being there.

(STILL WATCHING) Vanuatu
The Good: Not really any bland or dull characters. With Leann, Eliza, Julie, Dolly and Ami, easily the hottest overall group of female Survivors ever. One of the biggest power shifts in game history after Marquesas.
The Bad: Don't care for the men vs. women thing. While no real bad moments, also few real wow moments too.

Winners:

Richard - Set the path for all later winners by creating the game's first true alliance while Pagong spent all day playing in the mud. Throwing the final challenge is one of the smartest moves ever.
Brian - Completely owned all other people there in that season.
Danni - Overcame tremendous odds, being outnumbered 5-1 at one point. Completely duped one of the game's better players in Rafe and convinced him to destroy his game for her.
Tina - Controlled the game behind the shadows. Got Colby to destroy his game for her, much like Danni did to Rafe. Although did get very lucky with Mike falling in the fire.
Tom - One of the best challenge performers ever and fairly good strategic game too.
Vecepia - Underrated winner who was the early Rob C, switching from alliance to alliance depending on her best interests. Very mature player who made the right moves at the right times, even if few were extremely memorable or notable.
Sandra - Won it all without ever winning an immunity and should have been in danger at every vote from F7 on. But did go against the least likely vote getter in history with the already voted out Lill.
Aras - Like Ethan, wasn't extremely memorable or a great player. Cirie was the best strategist and Terry was the best challenge performer, but both missed F2, allowing him to win.
Ethan - Never really did anything memorable or great. Got lucky in that Kim J won final immunity and would rather have him win.
Jenna - Whining quitter wannabee who had little to no strategy, was way too arrogant and mean. Got lucky in that she got to steal Rob C's goat, Matt.
Amber - Should never even had been on the season in the first place. Only winner of the game to only get 1 vote for her, as three of her votes would have been cast for even Debb Eaton, as long as Boston Rob was next to her.

---
...Classic Moments in Survivor History...
Jenna: "Forget that deaf girl Christy, me and Heidi are the ones who are really handicapped since we're so beautiful!"

Gee, and she wonders why she's despised by so many -_-

11. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
Two Ranking lists is quite a handful. I'll post my Season favorites now and my Winner favorites on another post.

1) AFRICA - OK, the setting sucked. The dreary scenery made for unpleasant viewing, but hey, isn't the name of the show SURVIVOR? A great cast more than made up for it. You had a very likable winner. You had a hottie Kim who didn't have to be a skank to be sexy. Extremely entertaining character in Big Tom. And a colorful player in Lex. Because he was such a strong-headed "my way or the highway" person everyone that season might be preceived as a "follower", but it's more a testament to how dominant Lex was. Lastly Africa was the first season with the tribal switch before the merge, a twist that would forever change the game of Survivor.

2) PALAU - Any season where the perfect most complete player wins is tops in my book. Slightly marred by the futility of the Ulong (So-Long) tribe. Although never my favorite, it did produce Stephanie who was depicted as the "darling" of the season and most popular female to play--a title short-lived thanks to Guatemala. The dynamic duo of Tom/Ian contributed to Koror's dominance. Capped off with a REAL endurance final IC. Regardless of how it ended, over 10 hours is amazing!

3)COOK ISLANDS - There have been several seasons where I wanted no one in the finals to win, but Cook Islands was the first season where I wanted BOTH to win. Yea I know it was a F3; but only in numbers. Only Rob C. flipped more than Jonathan who added entertainment value to the season. Coa Boi had me rolling over in laughter early on. Disappointed with the female cast but the Finale was the best I can remember.

4) BORNEO - The season that started it all. We may never see a winner like Richard again. "Alliance" became a buzz word in Reality TV. Rudy was the grouchy grandpa I loved with all his memorable lines. And last but not least, Sue's "rats and snakes" speech will be the yardstick that sore losers will always be measured against.

5) AUSTRALIA - Like Africa, back when Survivor meant SURVIVING. The best cast of players for any season who shedded pounds faster than Parvati shedding her bikini at the hottub. Mike's fire mishap made all Reality TV fans realize the dangers that could occur. Best on screen fight (Alicia vs. Kimmi). Finally one of the biggest bonehead F3 decisions made that will be talked about for as long as Survivor lasts.

6) PANAMA - The original Exile Island. With apologies to Ozzy, Terry still is my pick for the most dominant challenge hound by a slim margin. The cast wasn't that great, but the One vs. tribe of six was captivating to watch every week...with the One coming a lillypad away from singlehandedly defying the improbable odds.

7) GUATEMALA - Wanted to rank this season higher, but still sour about inviting two former players back so soon. The best premier of the 13 seasons. Judd made the season more entertaining. First time we had the HII twist. And it's nice when the ultimate Survivor is a complete player.

8) VANUATU - Never liked the Battle of the Sexes format, but the men got what they deserved voting off the three strongest right off the bat. With the help from a few females, Chris completed his unthinkable comeback. Gave us my favorite TC where Leanne gets blindsided and the beginning of the end for the Ami alliance.

9) AMAZON - Another battle of the sexes. If not for Rob C. this season goes on the bottom. Chauvinist Pig Roger and Femi-Nazi Deanne, mirror images hating each other, had potential for a great sideshow but didn't last long enough to save this season.

10) THAILAND - The already challenged casting crew must have taken a vacation when casting for this season. Other than Brian and maybe Shi Ann they were the worst ever assembled. Even the shocking twist of the assumed "merge" backfired when it resulted in the actual merge happening later than normal and making the last 5-6 TCs predictable.

11) MARQUESAS - The Purple Rock fiasco wants me to cement this season in last place, but it did introduce us to Kathy one of my favorite Survivors of all time. The knucklehead tribe was a joke, and we had our first Survivor Ho--Sarah. Only memorable moment was the gay nurse John (whom Boston Rob referred to as Tink"a"bell) slam dunked the kaniving backstabber--a feat the so-called all stars were too stupid to do.

12) PEARL ISLAND - Hard to believe a season with Ruppert on the bottom. Even though "dead grandma" will go down in the Survivor hall of fame, it just reinforces what a vile man Johnny is. It gave us our first quitter. Equally pathetic is not just ONE but BOTH tribes were unable to prevent booted players from returning to the game--par for the course in this season. Which culminated in the worst F3 we'll ever see in this game.

N/A) "ALL-STARS" - Not a real season so doesn't deserve a ranking. A collection of 7th - 10th place losers trying to make the most of their second chance. To those who didn't--shame on you. To those who did--if you were so good you would have been seccessful the first time.

12. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
Part II. My favorite Winners

1) TOM WESTMAN - A salt of the earth type of guy with no weakness who was the most deserving winner ever. I never thought we would see anyone close to him, but...

2) YUL KWON - A close second. Was the quintessential complete player. Nice guys CAN finish first.

3) DANNI BOATWRIGHT - The answer to the question, "Can a female win without being promiscuous and/or an UTR coattail rider?" I give you Danni. She had it all and a great social game to boot. I'm still amazed that she successful convinced the producers to invite the opposing tribe to celebrate her birthday. Awesome play.

4) RICHARD HATCH - Don't like him as a person, but it does not take away from the fact that he was light years ahead of everyone else that first season on how to play the game.

5) BRIAN HEIDIK - OK his competition sucked, but that's not his fault. I feel Brian is a type of player who would do well in any season. A rare blend of manipulation and strong in challenges. Was able to react well and was quick on his feet.

6) ETHAN ZOHN - A very likable guy. Will not get top ranking on many lists because he happened to be aligned with a power-hungry take charge leader. Just a type of guy that took what he had and made the best of it enroute to a million dollars.

7) JENNA MORASCA - Just a coincidence that Jenna follows Ethan on the list. A classic example of being at the right place at the right time. Even though she did win (or was handed) a couple key challenges at the end, if casted any other season she would be sitting no lower than the top row at the Reunion Show.

8) CHRIS DAUGHERTY - Not the way I would play the game but his lying and deception carried him all the way. Well he did get help from three females who decided to flip at the perfect time. But to his credit, he made the most of this opportunity.

9) ARAS BASKAUSKAS - Winner through osmosis. How so? Terry's phenomenal immunity run allowed Aras to advance. Had Terry been forced to use his HII, Aras is a goner. Winning by losing. An oxymoron to some; a million dollars to Aras; a low ranking from me.

10) TINA WESSON - UTR Coattail riders scrape the bottom of the barrell with me. But I did find her likable and probably more proactive than the other UTR coattail riders in this game.

11) VECEPIA TOWERY - I have nothing against Vecepia, but a sad day for Survivor when they handed her the million dollar check and title ultimate Survivor. Never though it could get worse; but I was wrong...

12) SANDRA DIAZ-TWINE - The Poster child of UTR Coattail rider. She even openly admitted at the final TC her tagalong status and how inept she was. Lil giftwrapped the championship to her. Aside from being useless as a Survivior an equally pathetic individual who threw the food away from starving individuals and threatened to destroy their shelter if at risk of being voted off. Disgusting.

N/A) AMB"A" - Not counting all-stars but if forced to give my assessment: Coattail Rider. End of statement.

13. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
LAST EDITED ON 12-20-06 AT 04:38 AM (EST)

HA! Entertaining list, Aruba.
Now, my winners, with maybe a couple changes...

1. Brian- Still the best. His tribe was pathetic, but he helped lead it to a 5-4 majority against a younger, more athletic tribe. He all but single-handedly won the IC at 5-5, which Helen admitted to later on. He is the only one to actually tell us what everyone's role in the game was weeks before the final outcome. He provided for his tribe, led his tribe, and dominated the ICs after Ted was booted. He was never threatened. Everyone thought they were going to the F2 with him, but he controled the boots and ultimately brought the perfect goat with him. Somewhat sad competition, yes, but still most masterful win we've seen. Plus, he hates dogs, and so do I.
2. Tom Westman- Best challenge-performer of all the winners and never stopped strategizing the whole time he was out there. He led the most dominant tribe ever and seized control by courageously agreeing to force a tie in order to oust Greg. Faced best F6 ever with strategical players in Greg, Jen, Ian and Katie. Used every method possible to keep the target off his back. I can see him being #1, but not for me because Ian made many of the strategical decisions, including the plan to force the tie. Brian needed no such help.
3. Yul Kwon- Arguably, he played the best strategical game ever. He completely controled his tribe both before and after merge. He was an upfront leader like Tom, which is a very dangerous position, but he used the HII and Ozzy's physical dominance to keep the target off of him. Also, he was incredibly likable and respected by every player in the game. Perhaps my favorite all time survivor, but I can't make him #1 because he never won a challenge. Sure, he never needed to, but it still leaves the question: if he DID need to, like if there was an F2, COULD he have?
4. Richard Hatch- Yes, he came up with the alliance strategy, and he was/is a brilliant manipulator. BUT, I'm still trying to figure out what half those people were doing out there. It isn't just that his competition didn't know how to play the game; I swear they weren't even concerned about the game. Sue and Kelly W seemed like the only other strategists that whole season. He was also not a great challenge performer, but he still deserves to be near the top.
5. Amber Mariano- Yeah, I know, people don't like her because she didn't even deserve to be on All-Stars and then she stole the win when Rob deserved it more. Believe me, no one thinks Rob deserved to win more than me. But watch the season a couple times and you will see that Amber dominated against the women in all the challenges, including key tribal challenges. She won the most important challenge of the season in the F4. And she made several key strategic moves to keep herself in the game and to keep her and Rob in power. It wasn't all Rob; it was Romber. She gave the strongest challenge performance for any woman besides Kelly W., and she deserved her win.
6. Aras- Aras was pretty average in all areas: challenge-wise, survival-wise, socially and strategically, but you can argue that he also led his tribe and managed to win. And that is not an easy thing to do, as I have attested many times. And Casaya was not the easiest tribe to lead. Of course, idiocy on Danielle's part made things easier, and Terry never needing to use the HII helped too.
7. Ethan- Ethan was essentially a male coattail rider, but he was capable at surviving and in challenges. And it was HIS alliance that he rode to the end. I always give more credit for that vs. being a swing vote to break up someone else's alliance.
8. Danni- Danni had one of the best social games. I mean, how can you not like her? She is gorgeous but not snooty about it, and athletic but not competitive, at least not that season. She made some mistakes premerge but worked her way in to become the swing vote for Rafe and Steph to seize control. She took advantage of Rafe's strategical blunder and rode a bitter jury to victory.
9. Chris- Virtually identical to Danni, except he was even more pathetic and foolish premerge. He never stopped playing though and had great fortune fall into his lap when Twila and Scout used him to break up the women's alliance. He very predictably won the ICs down the stretch to ruin their game and gain the F2 where he easily won against a somewhat hated opponent.
10. Jenna M. - Another pageant winner who won Survivor, how pathetic. She has dropped bigtime for me after repeated viewings of The Amazon. She was nearly intolerable up until the F4 with some of the most ignorant and snotty statements ever made on Survivor. She had no strategy other than to make friends. She won thanks to a string of miraculous IC wins at the end, which says more for the guys competing against her than it does for her.
11. Tina - She will always be the original coattail rider to me. She was likable and took advantage of another somewhat bitter jury.
12. Vecepia- Praise the Lord! Survivor can be won without doing much at all. I will simply ride along with Sean here until the F4. Have Paschal pick the purple rock. Have Neleh, of all people, win at F3 and pick me because she certainly doesn't want to go up against Kathy. And Hallelujah! 1 million dollars!
13. Sandra- In the ultimate test of survival of the weakest, she was the winner, hands down. She was unlikable and completely inept challenge-wise. The weakest challenge performer of all the winners. She basically was inept in all things besides speaking Spanish and speaking her mind, which made her the perfect nonthreat that no one worried about. A blight on Survivor History as far as I am concerned. If there had been two winners in a row like Sandra, I would no longer be watching Survivor.

14. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
Seasons Rank

1. 13 Cook Islands - Probably this season really won back many old fans who got bored of the show and did not bother to watch it anymore. Multi-racial cast was fine and underdog story was best ever with Jonathan the Villain polishing it smoothely.

2. 1 Borneo - The season that started SURVIVOR and made people around the world to watch it. Though orgin of Pagonging was made, Tagi alliance made excellent job to let future contestant how to play.

3. 11 Guatemala - Great casts, harsh environment and no sea. This three combination did work out for Guatemala. Rafe was great survivor. But why did they had to put Steph and BoobyJon in it. They could have waited till secon Allstars.

4. 2 Outback - Another fabulous season. Jerri gave a lot of fun to watch the show. Lis was adorable survivor, beutiful. Very sorry for Michael for incident.

5. 12 Exile Island - Hell of a theme to have an Exile Island, though it should have lasted for only this season. It was fun to watch when Terry is going to be busted out of the game, though I really though he was winning and whised he could.

6. 6 Amazon - They had bad casting in males(in exception of RobC) which was probably to even males and females in early challenges. Though Jenna wasn't likable, it was fun to watch her win.

7. 4 Marquesas - The show was real crap in the begining. But when Rotu4 made such a stupid move to let the other 5 to allign, it was a fun game to watch. Kathy should have won.

8. 8 ALL-STARS - Boring season. There shouldn't be love-lines in Survivor! But Robfathar arranging everything to the end for his fiance was quite a fun.

9. 5 Thailand - I don't think this was actually that bad. I love Brian. But the whole season aspect was real gross.

10. 7 Pearl Islands - This should have been on the top of the list, if they hadn't put the idea of OUTKASTS and brought 2 people back into the game. The season was great with Jonny and Rupert, but Lilly really pissed me up and avoided watching the show at the end of it.

11. 3 Africa - A real boring season. The harsh African environment was quite nice. But the show was real boring.

12. 10 Palau - Shocked to watch 2 people leave without voting. That was fresh. But Pagonging started before the merge and it was obvious either Tom or Ian would win it.

13. 9 Vanuatu - Though Chris won the season, he screwed up the game by making Fat5 alliance and let all the girls left after the merge. He only won because he could keep winning IC against women.

Winners Rank

1. 5 Brian - Not a likable guy and not liked winner by most. But he was great planner. He brought Clay to the end, who he could beat in F2. He was succesful all the way till the end. He sold too many lemons but anthing is possible to win the game, and they should do it if it assures them a million.

2. 13 Yul - Real branny. He tried to play with integrity though he admitted that he couldn't but tried his best. He played this game to earn votes from the jury even after they were eliminated which everyone should be doing, not getting pissed at that.

3. 12 Aras - He didn't seem so great because shadow of Terry was too big. But he was a real good athelete and had control in the game.

4. 1 Richard - It was easy Pagonging to win the game. But this guy at least managed to do it. Though he was the first winner and it makes people to underestimate the way he played.

5. 11 Danni - Won the Immunity at right time, formed an alliance at right time and bashed Rafe out at right time. She was a darn good in politics and her way to allign with dominant tribe.

6. 6 Jenna - Who would have guessed she could win? Surprise winning gains my favor.

7. 7 Sandra - Real good coatail rider with magnificient UTR format. She was so silent when all other were doing things and oulasted them all.

8. 10 Tom - Easy Pagonging with assistance of Ian made him win. If there wasn't Ian, he couldn't have done it.

9. 2 Tina - Another riding coatail. Doesn't seem to be right person to win.

10. 8 Amber - And another riding coatail. And as I've said above, NO love-lines in Survivor!

11. 3 Ethan - Guess he was also riding coatail under Lex.

12. 4 Vecepia - Ummmh, was she even there until they came down to 5?

13. 9 Chris - As I've mentioned above, it was his fault to make Vanuatu season one of the worst season ever!

Allright! That's it for today!

LAST EDITED ON 12-21-06 AT 09:58 AM (EST)

Seasons:

1. Cook Islands: A breath of fresh air!! It was a great show - great characters and drama. Very entertaining to watch the Underdog Aitu 4 make it all the way to the Final 4. IMHO, Ozzy was robbed of the title, but I was also happy to see Yul win it. For once, the most deserving lasted the longest. I was cheering for them the whole way! Also, Jonathan was fun to watch and Candice gets my vote as Biggest & Stupidest DAW ever!!

2. Australia: By far, the toughest conditions we've ever seen -- accidents, floods, fires, loss of food, etc... Great, colorful characters in Colby, Elizabeth, Jerri, Keith, and company. Very entertaining to watch, even though Colby took the WRONG one to F2!!

3. All-Stars: What can I say -- Robfadda stole the show!! Of course, it did help when the Challenges were designed around his talents and abilities!! Very, very entertaining. Loved seeing the demise of Lex. Some of those All-Stars though, had very big egos and it was very disappointing to see two of them leave the show.

4. Pearl Islands: A great series with great characters- Rupert, Johnny Fairplay, Big Lil, Burton and of course, "I'll vote for anyone, as long as it's not me," Sandra! I'm glad she won!

5. Borneo - The original social experiment. We watched it and we were hooked! Created a whole sub-culture of which I am happy to say, I am a part of. Some great characters too!

6. Palau - The most deserving individual won! I was happy to see Tom win. He played the best and made the best choice to take to the F2! No contest. His tribe annihilated the young, buff but lazy Ulongs too.

7. Amazon - This was a great show and I think this was the first time they separated the tribes by their sex. Rob C. was highly entertaining, as was Matt. However, Jenna M. and Heidi didn't do much for me.

8. Africa - I liked Africa because I liked its characters. Lex, Tom, Frank and Ethan were all fun to watch. I did think Lex deserved to win it however. Just bad luck for him.

9. Thailand - I didn't like the Final 3, but I thought Brian was one of the best players of the game yet.

10. Panama/ Exile Island: Although the young, lazy undeserving players advanced over the hard-working, more deserving players, I enjoyed this show. I loved Terry and Dan and their tribe and was sad to see the likes of Aras and Danielle and the Mentally-challenged lunatic Shane pick them off. Cirie also stole the show.

11. Guatemala - A tough season. The good guys all got picked off by the young lazy guns. Not very much fun to see. Although I was happy to see Danni beat Steph.

12. Vanuatu - Beautiful scenery, but a boring show. I didn't like the characters as much - Scout, Sarge, Chris, Twila, Naked Julie were all kind of shallow to me. Worst cast yet. I'm sure they are great people, they just didn't hold or keep my attention.

13. Marquesas - Worst show ever. All the best players got voted off early. With the exception of Kathy O'Brien, the worst, most boring characters advanced. The one bright spot of the show was the introduction of Rob Mariano!

Winners:

1. Tom Westman
2. Yul Kwon

Post-All-Stars Seasons Ranking:

1. Palau (overall #3): Great opening. Nice arc. Strong pre-merge episodes. It's fun watching Ulong self-destruct. Post-merge is good with only one weak episode.

2. Cook Islands (overall #4): Nice arc. Good ending. About 4-6 good episodes.

3. Vanuatu (overall #6): Fantastic opening. Great post-merge episodes. Great jury.

4. Guatemala: too much of a StepheME show. Urgh.

5. Panama - Exile Island: A "back-to-the-basic" Survivor. Been there. Seen that. Meh.

Nice list kchong but I have a question: To avoid being selfish, should Chris have given his torch to Jeff? If he doesn't boot a young guy, he's toast.

Vanuatu had a man who introduced himself as "Sarge". You had to know that the guy would want to lead. He proposed an alliance to the young men first but they refused, telling him it was too early to play like that. Chris went to Sarge and offered help with strategy, propping up the military man's leadership. In my book, the young men were dumb, Chris was smart early on. (Look at the young guys scattered voting pattern in episode #1 for proof of their stupidity)

NuLopevi was in good position at merge because Twila told us she liked the men more than the women and Julie wasn't yet part of Ami's alliance. Julie scared Twila back to Ami by telling her that Sarge had also given her a F4 deal. Chris can't have all the blame.

How many winners were target in episode #1? Chris managed to survive in very difficult conditions. He's not a great winner but he was fun to watch!

^ Chris was certainly fun to watch. Also, I think the editors/storytellers made a HUGE mistake in the way they edited Vanuatu. How should they have edited it?

IMO, here's how the story should have been told:

A trickster and thief is cornered and caught by six witches: the lazy witch, a bitchy witch, the vain witch, etc. etc. (Let each witch represent an archetypical negative value, but the trickster is an anti-hero himself. Anti-hero works on the emotional level only when the antagonistic forces are more negative than he is. For storytelling purposes, it's more effective to simplify each antagonistic character into an archetype that represents a negative value instead of giving her too much of a complex personality and depth. That's the more effective way to tell a story with an unique arc.)

Let's continue with the story. The trickster is caught by the six witches without any weapon or hope for survival. He only has his wits and deceptions. Instead of finishing off the trickster right away, the witches start to get into disagreements over how they want to cook the trickster.

"Let's pig roast him! He'll taste sooo good roasted!" The angry witch says.

"No, I say we fry him!" says the bitchy witch.

"You two should listen to me! I say we boil him in a pot!" Says the vain witch.

The trickster listens, and he siezes the opportunity to turn the witches against one another: "Oh, she says you should listen to her because she is the smartest and prettiest one!"

"Are you two saying I'm stupid??" The vain witch says.

"Well, you are stupid!" replies the bitchy witch.

...

The six witches start getting into argument. The argument turns into a fight. Soon enough, the witches get so angry that they pull out their wands and start zapping each other! *Poof!* *Boom!* *Bang!*

When the dust settles, all the witches are dead, and the trickster is the last man standing. He's alive and victorious! Armed with nothing but his quick wit, lies and deceptions, the tricksters beat the six witches (who were powerful and knew magic)!

...

That's how Vanuatu should have been edited, to emphasize the natural story arc that arose from the game. But the editors foolishly gave too much complexity and depth to the characters. The result: the characters and story arc are competing for the audience's attention, and the end production ends up as a mess. The storyteller can only focus on EITHER the characters OR the arc, but not both. It's either a drama or a story. It's the storytelling dichotomy and dilemma.

Vanuatu has a natural story arc, but the editors used the wrong editing style for storytelling. They created a drama when they should have created a story. That's why Vanuatu is generally the most disliked season. The audience see the drama, but we also intuitively sense the story. The drama and the story competed for our attention, and the end result was a mess.

In the beginning, the story was told as the "war tribe" Lopevi in an internal conflict and Scout's "Peace and Love" tribe striving for harmony. In the end, the women's tribe won over the men's but they never reached harmony. Those themes were well defined and used.

As for the winner, the previous season had shown us the winning alliance, Romber, very openly but the winner wasn't the one we expected. Vanuatu did the exact opposite. The editors hid the final alliance, Chris and Twila's F2 agreeement was never showed, but the winner was as much in our face as Rob, the loser, had been. Chris kept telling us he came to play and that he wanted to fool everyone. We just couldn't see how he could do it. The story had it's witches, to follow your image. Both Ami and Twila were manufactured villains, players that saw their actions amplified by editing to give us what we wanted to see: Their fall. The editing was fine and Vanuatu was one of the funniest season's ever.

^ Let me be more specific: the six witches should have CONTRASTING personalities to make them stand out from one another. Emphasize one or two negative values of each witch. Make the witches clearly stand out from each other by their individual archetypical symbolic values, but never give them too much depth. And don't create a likeable witch -- because you can't have a likeable antagonist when you are telling an anti-hero story. When you want your audience to emphasize with your anti-hero who's not exactly likeable, you have to make all the antagonistic characters/forces/environments even more unlikeable and bleak than the anti-hero, so we have reasons to root for the anti-hero. That's a storytelling rule, really. If you have an unlikeable anti-hero and a likeable antagonist, the audience will get confused and won't know who to root for. The roles of the anti-hero and the antagonist get mixed up and confused. And when the anti-hero wins, the audience will be very disatisfied with the ending because they root for the antagonist who's more likeable than the anti-hero.

Anyway, Vanuatu is generally the most least liked post-A.S.S. season. That seems to be the majority consensus. I think it's because of poor editing -- the editor make poor editing/storytelling choices. Palau seems to be the most well like among the general audience, but I'm not sure if that has changed since Cook Islands. Let's wait a while and see.

"To avoid being selfish, should Chris have given his torch to Jeff? If he doesn't boot a young guy, he's toast."

Yet he continued to boot ALL the strongest links in his tribe. In an alliance, it's generally better to include (in Yul's word) "diversity" (a diverse mix of people) to keep it strong. If an alliance includes ONLY weak players, it'll get picked off one by one.

I'm not sure what he could do better -- because that seasons were kinda weird with five older out-of-shape guy with three young strong guys, and the older guys of course would gang up on the younger guys. Perhaps they could have considered having like, let say, three fat and two strong, or three fat and one strong, or two fat and two strong, or something like that. But I'm not in his situation, so it's not for me to say. But Chris really, really lucked out in that season that the women were too interested in having a catfight and slashing each other's throat to pay attention to him.

You're right that Vanuatu is far from a fan favorite but, instead of the editing, let me propose 2 other reasons that I think turned viewers off:

1- Repeating the Women vs Men Twist. It worked in Amazon but Vanuatu became the Anti-Amazon in every aspect.

2- The cast had many attractive players but in the end, we had the 3 least photogenic players.

I don't think Chris or any of the Flab-5 should've kept a strong guy they distrusted for one of their own. Again, the producers made that easy for them, all the challenges were puzzles, memory tests and balance. Lopevi still had plenty of muscle, it was simply useless.

ETA: Probst wasn't going to let Julie be portrayed as a witch!

22. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
SEASONS:

1. Cook Islands - Totally reinvigorated the game by finally having such a racially-diverse cast. I loved everything about it & Yul was the icing on the cake. The best final 2 (3) ever in the history of Survivor. Also it is nice to see someone play a strategic game, while not checking all of their morals at the door. So sad it's over. I hope they include a lot of extras on the DVDs -- and they better come out SOON

2. Panama - I'm surprised this is so high on my list. I was NOT happy about the outcome, because I was rooting for Terry all the way and wanted to see Terry/Austin/Nick/Dan make the final 4, plus Sally. This season had a lot of laughs with Cirie & Shane ~~ there was a whole lot of crazy going on & an unpredictable season, because usually the dysfunctional tribes lose!

3. All-Stars - I thought AllStars was GREAT ~~ except for bothering to bring back past winners. I saw many survivors in a new light and people I formerly liked blew it (like LEX) and people I formerly didn't like became one of my favorite Survivors (Boston Rob). There was a lot of melodrama (Sue & Richard) too much nakedness by Rich, but the best thing about AS was Rob's domination and the watching Romber fall in love. It was wonderful. Unfortunately, bitter jurors gave the mil to the wrong player (which makes you wonder how they could call themselves Allstars).

4. Australia - Great location & some great casting. Mike the hunter got a pig to feed his tribe. Mike taken out of the game too early by fall into fire. Floods and famine -- Jiffy offering rice for shelter. Poor Elisabeth losing her hair. Elisabeth & Roger. The awesome Alicia ready to kick Kimmi's dumb arse. The location! I liked Tina, but didn't see her deserving as a winner. I always have & always will see Colby as the cheesiest guy on Survivor.

5. Africa - Casting wise, a pretty blah season, but the locale was GREAT! I give everyone credit for not quitting that season ~~ as soon as I saw the mucky water hole, I knew I would have been like Jessie, puking non-stop. Lex was sneaky & slightly "poor loser", but tolerable back then. I liked Ethan and was glad he won in the end. Tom always has & always will annoy me. I can't understand him & he acts like a fool. What possesses a grown man to run around with a feather up his bum???

6. Pearl Islands -HATED the twist of the "2nd chance" castaways getting to return. Worst twist ever!! Rupert was the man and I liked his little alliance with Sandra & Christa. Ryno & Andrew could have been contenders. Osten was a joke, afraid of a Pelican? Big guy quits like a baby? Pathetic. Lil is about the most annoying survivor ever & the stupid twist sends her back into the game. Man, I hated that. Fairplay was the best scoundrel ever (I hate giving him credit, too). As soon as he uttered the words, "My grandma died." I knew he was lying. It was great to see the Survivors' reactions when they found they had been duped.

7. Borneo - Out of respect, since this was the first season. I was so excited when this show first aired and then SO DISGUSTED to find out people like Rich & Sue would win over people like Rudy, who actually could "Survive." Obviously, I have learned to appreciate the other aspects of the game and can respect "players," I just hate it when the jerks make it to the end. RUDY was my man this season. He cracked me up with his straightforward approach to things. I knew this was going to be a good show and glad the production and everything improved. Seriously, when I watch the 1st season, it looks so cheap compared to now.

8. Palau - Watching the season the 2nd time around, I realized it was not as great as I thought it was. This was the first time a dominating "good guy" won the season with Tom (which I loved), but that darn KatieCow really takes a lot away from the season. Ian, Jenn, Coby were all great and I liked them all. Tom had it easy, though, coming from a WINNING tribe & he did get a little cocky at times, but that's okay. He should be ashamed of himself for getting fall-down stupid drunk, though. Oh and there was a great underdog to root for in Stephanie (& BoobyJon, though I thought he was dumb as a box of rocks).

9. Guatemala - It started off so good, with the overnight hike to the camps to start off the show ~~ the mayan ruins were breathtaking ~~ the introduction of the Hidden Immunity Idol ~~ and then it went to hell in a handbasket. Stephanie went from sweetheart to b-word for letting her "power" & "popularity" go to her head. I think Steph & BoobyJon just ruined the season for me. Note to EPMB: Don't ever bring "audience faves" back to play in a regular season, it's all bad!

10. Marquesas - Highlights were Kathy & Boston Rob (though I didn't appreciate him until Allstars & he kind of annoyed me), but Vecepia as a winner? And Neleh making it as far as she did? And poor Paschal and hat darned purple rock! Glad they did away with that.

11. Amazon - I hated Jenna & Heidi (even though they would have assumed I would be part of their "pretty girls club." What was good was Christy as the first "handicapped" person to be on the show -- just a shame it was a season full of shallow imbeciles. Deena, even though she was a bit of a B-word. Matt, even though he was the first whack job on the show, he really was robbed of the win in the end. Rob C ~~ NOT the best player, by a long shot, to never win the game ~~ but he was really funny in all his confessionals & vote speeches. He may have won his season if he didn't let his pee-pee take over.

12. Vanuatu - Boy, I hated this season. Sarge was okay, Chad was pretty cool & Ami was a decent player -- the rest of the lot? Yuck. No one to root for.

13. Thailand - Shii-Ann was the only person worth watching this season ~~ well, Ken wasn't too bad on the eyes Once Shii-Ann was booted, it wasn't worth watching. I despised that slimer Brian & his winged monkey Clay was annoying. Jan was batty. It was all bad.

My Winners:

1. Yul Kwon - Shocking, isn't it? For me he is the best player to play AND win the game. I like all that he stands for & he's pretty darn hot, too. GREAT leader, GREAT strategist, GREAT human being.

2. Tom Westman - He was a good leader and a physical force, however, he really had it easy by being on a winning tribe and having Ian on his side as a shield.

3. Sandra Diaz-Twine - She really isn't given enough credit for her win. While "under the radar" it was more like "stealth mode," because she did her fair share of orchestrating, manipulating and throwing out the fish was GENIOUS and the right thing to do. That won me over.

4. Danni Boatwright - An underdog, yet strong player who knew when to lay low & when to try and make a move.

5. Ethan Zohn - I just think he's a great guy, though he didn't do anything noteworthy or remarkable.

6. Richard Hatch - Hated him when the show first aired. After a few seasons, I started to appreciate him just a little. He figured out the game quickly, but lucked out by being surrounded by naive, unsuspecting and good human beings.

7. Tina Wesson - She was nice, but did nothing noteworthy. Gets a little credit for being first UTR to win.

8. Amber Mariano - I actually like her now, but she SHOULD NOT have won. But, she was great at being Rob's girl.

9. Aras Baskauskas - He got lucky.

10. Vecepia Towery - Didn't deserve to win, but I don't dislike her. She was/is a good person.

11. Jenna Morasca - Still don't understand how she won. Stupid, stupid jury.

12. Chris Daugherty - He was just icky. Shame on the girls for allowing a liar like this break up their alliance and win. Us women are supposed to have a thing called "intuition." How is it none of them figured him out??

13. Brian Heidik - The only Survivor I can actually say I hate. He skeeved me out from the beginning, before I even knew about his shady past. He doesn't get any credit for his "string pulling" his season, because it was like shooting fish in a barrel. His tribe was like a bunch of 3-year-olds getting bossed around by a bratty teenager. No skill involved or needed!

Hey Catty-

Loved your comments! You and I are thinking pretty much along the same lines, although I was cheering for Ozzy for the win, I do agree that it was the best F2 ever, and I'm still happy that
won!!

Hey listen, I see that you are a big fan of
's. So why don't you insert his pic next to your siggie like this ...

But you'll have to size it correctly.

Hmm, good idea, Scar. I'm starting to get the hang of the photo cropping & stuff, so hopefully I'll be bringing on some fancy siggy's soon.

Does anyone else think the post-All-Stars winners are more sophisticated than the pre-All-Stars winners? It seems like the top players in the post-All-Stars seasons are getting better and better all the time. (In general.)

Agree. I think the biggest reason is the increasing number of twists built into the game. Makes the game ever more complex and forces players who are playing to win to play at a higher level. I don't think any previous winner had to face as many twists as Yul did this season.

The first or most recent people to do something are always given the most credit; it doesn't matter what accomplishment you are talking about. Richard will always be rated high because he was first and the most recent winners typically get more credit than winners from 3-4 years ago. Memories fade. It is natural.
That being said, I also agree that the winners now have to overcome more twists in the game. They also typically have to overcome better players. People watch Survivor. They know how to play Survivor, and fewer and fewer non-players now get into the cast. I would say Flicka and Stephanie were non-players. The other 18 people all were into playing the game. In Borneo, I seriously think there were 4-5 people who were really there to play the game vs. being on TV or being out for an adventure.

35. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"

SEASONS

1. Africa -- a brutal season, first switch and a deserving winner
2. Borneo -- Great characters, the original still among the best.
3. Australia -- another tough season, good cast, first UTR winner
4. Pearl Islands -- fun season with Rupert, Christa and Sandra
5. Cook Islands -- Underdogs win, Jonathan, the mutiny and a final three (well 2 1/2).
6. Guatemala -- Terry dominates but somehow Danni wins
7. All-Stars -- Watching Romber control the game was fascinating, but it made for an obvious result.
8. Marquesas -- Rooted for Kathy O. Not much else good about the season.
9.Vanuatu -- Chris overcoming the odds and Ami the villian were the only highlights.
10. Amazon -- Rob C. was entertaining. The rest was not.
11. Panama/Exile Island -- Ugh.
12. Palau -- Tom dominates. Ian cracks. Ugh.
13. Thailand -- Least memorable cast.

39. "RE: The Traditional Rank-'Em Thread"
It gets tougher to do this with each passing season and my opinions are always changing - especially after re-watching a season on DVD or on TV...

Seasons:
1. Cook Islands - great cast, good twists that mostly worked, good strategizing, great location
2. Borneo - I'll always be partial to the season that started it all and no divas/egos (other than Dicque)
3. Australia - best strategizing and great characters, so-so location
4. Palau
5. Pearl Islands
6. Vanuatu
7. Marquesas
8. Panama/Exile Island
9. Amazon
10. Guatemala
11. Thailand
12. All-Stars
13. Africa

Winners:
1. Richard Hatch - The original and the master. Sure, he didn't have a lot of competition who knew a thing about alliances, but Survivor might not have had the long-term success without him.
2. Yul Kwon - Might be more deserving than Dicque, but I'll give Dicque the benefit of doubt for being a trailblazer. Ask me again after next season, I might decide Yul's #1 then.
3. Brian Heidik
4. Tina Wesson
5. Sandra Diaz-Twine
6. Chris Daugherty
7. Tom Westman
8. Aras Baskauskas
9. Danni Boatwright
10. Ethan Zohn
11. Amber Mariano Brkich - going with the name she was on the show with!
12. Jenna Morasca
13. Vecepia Towery - I like her as a person, but she was zzzzzzz as a game-player, in challenges, and everywhere on the show. Not her fault, but the editing didn't highlight her at all and I never got a sense of how she played the game.
