Perth is on the other side of the country from where I live just north of Brisbane on the east coast. Unfortunately I don't know anything about Fremantle or Rottnest Island from first hand experience. TAR4 came to my part of the world, which I didn't find out about until 6 months later. ***sigh***The wonderful network which shows TAR here decided in their infinite wisdom to show the first half of the first leg the same week as the US and then proceeded to totally stuff the schedule. We are now 3 weeks behind, and I just couldn't find the energy to come in here before last week. From newspaper articles last November, Darwin is the next stop and they were reported as heading to Crocodylus Park just south of the city. Crocodiles are big business in the Northern Territory. http://wmi.com.au/crocpark/crocpark.html I think the report said they got to Darwin about 7.00 pm. I checked local airlines and the only flight to Darwin arriving at that time leaves Perth at midday. Darwin is one and a half hours ahead timewise of Perth. The flight goes via Alice Springs. All other flights from Perth to Darwin go via Sydney or Melbourne and with layovers in those cities take over 8 hours. What surprised me was there were no direct flights from Perth to Darwin. Obviously not a popular route. I'm going to Darwin next year, at least there are direct flights from Brisbane! Another newspaper report said racers were seen at Adelaide airport trying to get to Singapore. That would probably be at the start of the following leg, not in the next one. I read that a photo was printed in a US TV guide of Joseph with an Aborigine and a didgeridoo. Without seeing the photo and the background, it could be at Uluru (Ayers Rock) which is off the beaten track halfway between Darwin and Adelaide so it's a logical destination - the didgeridoo playing is probably the roadblock. So this bit is pure speculation. There's a fair few aboriginal type tourist locations in the Northern Territory - Kakadu is another one.

From RealityFanForum "So they will be bunched at the doors of the bell tower until 10 am and then to the airport to catch Qantas flight 1942 leaving at 12:20 pm and arriving in Darwin at 7:05 pm (stops for about 1:45 along the way)." That's the flight I found. The 1:45 stop is in Alice Springs. The bell tower could open earlier, after all it has happened once or twice before in other races, but I think they would easily make the 12.20 flight even if it didn't open earlier. Perth's not that big, and the airport is not that far from the CBD, where the bell tower is. It's an internal flight so there's no customs holduops. A 30 minute pre-flight check-in time generally applies, but I'm sure Qantas would waive that for 16 last minute travellers!Others were speculating over there that they took a charter plane to Darwin. Unlikely in view of the fact that a commercial flight landed at the time reported in the newspaper article. Also photos over at RFF show racers at an airport ticket counter. The black shirt photo of Joseph would be of them still in Perth. As they get into Darwin at night, they would probably do the crocodile park the next day, and then from what I read at RFF they go skydiving and then they go to Litchfield National Park. I know nothing about that part of the world. Again from RFF "Looks like there might be a few little streams or something to get wet in. Doesn't look like it's a full-fledged river they're splashing around in." Humpf. NT rivers had plenty of water last week when Cyclone Monica wandered through. ***grin***
