1|1|RE%3A Topic Icon Colors%2C Flames%2C and Locks|sleeeve||15:43:30|05/28/2002|Yellow icons mean that there is a new message in that thread since the last time you visited the site.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe forum software does its best to keep track of the last time you visited so that it can update the yellow%2Fblue icons for you as appropriate%2C but if you use the %22mark as read%22 button at the top of each forum%2C you can change each icon in that forum from yellow to blue immediately... this is handy%2C so that you don%27t have to try to keep track of what you%27ve read%2C and what you haven%27t... also%2C since you can do it on a forum-by-forum basis%2C if a new post appears in one forum while you%27re reading another%2C it%27s easy to go find it %28cause it will be hilighted in yellow%29.%0D%0A%0D%0AFrom the lobby%2C you can mark all of the forum as read%2C if you choose... Notice that the folders on the lobby also change from yellow to blue and back to indicate the presence of new messages... personally%2C I%27d recommend only using %22mark as read%22 in each individual forum%2C because its a daunting task to read the entire message board at once.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs i said%2C if you choose not to use mark as read%2C the forum software will try to change the blue and yellow icons for you%2C but it%27s not nearly as reliable.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs for the flames... any time a topic gets more than 20 replies%2C the flames appear to mean that it%27s a hot topic... it means nothing in terms of performance of the individual thread... it%27s just there so that people notice that this topic%2C for whatever reason%2C is generating a lot of discussion.%0D%0A%0D%0ALocks can only be added and removed by moderators... once a lock is in place%2C no messages in that thread can be edited or modified by any user other than a moderator.%0D%0A%0D%0APlease note that a locked forum is NOT the same as a locked thread... you may post to a locked forum%2C but your post will not appear until a moderator has decided whether it is appropriate to display...
