"So what would you have done?"
Put yourself in Toni and Dallas shoes - you have just seen the taxi drive off with your passports and money. What would you have done?

It happens all the time that people leave things in taxis. With a bit of luck you know the name of the taxi company, and then you get on the phone and hope that dispatch can find the car and your bag. This is certainly much harder in a foreign language and the larger the city (and Moscow is not small).

At least in most Canadian and American cities (at least in my experience) the taxi companies are registered and print their company name on the vehicles. This didn't seem to be the case in many of the TAR countries.

Could Dallas have grabbed another taxi and said "follow that car!"??

It was certainly a tough situation. What would you have done??

I’m not sure what I would have done but I do know what I would NOT have done, which is immediately leave the area where the cab dropped me off!!!

As soon as the cab picks up his next fare he is going to find the bag. If he hasn’t traveled too far away yet he might (BIG might) actually come back to see if you are still there…in my case, possibly crying hysterically. I think your odds of this happening are increased if you have a camera crew with you!

Good point about staying put and hoping the cab comes back. I don't know what normal taxi protocol on that sort of thing is. Do they come back or take the findings back to "Lost & Found"?

Certainly continuing on the challenges was brave, but they must have know that they were toast. They really should have spent all their effort (at least their initial effort) on trying to get the bag back.

That is exactly what I thought he should do!
I can't believe he went on his merry way; and even if he had, why didn't he & Toni return to where the cab dropped him off and wait a bit; ask someone for help; something!
Seemed quite a few people spoke English. I think they could have found someone who might have been able to help.

If I didn't panic and was thinking clearly I'd try to get another cab to follow quickly down the street the one that had my stuff in it-but Dallas had no money on him, I guess you'd have to be up front about that.

Ugh. It killed me to see that happen to them

I know taxis here will give people a ride when the money is waiting at the other end. They might get stiffed occassionally that way, but it is good service.

Assuming the cab was out of sight when Dallas realized he left THE MOST IMPORTENT PIECE OF LUGGAGE HE HAS EVER BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH HIS ENTIRE LIFE in a taxi, which is what it appeared happened since he didn't immediatly try to chase it down, I think I would have tried to find a bi-lingual local to help me notify the police and US consolate, which is, if I were a taxi driver, where I would have turned the passports into. Unfortunately for them, that stuff takes time, and, well, they WERE in a race.

Often cabs in Moscow aren't even marked. People sometimes offer their own personal cars as cabs to make extra money. He could have tried to flag down another driver, who was driving his own car.

I wondered why TAR didn't let Toni and Dalls finish their tasks and penalize them 1/2 hour or so for not taking a taxi, instead of sending them back.

Probably because the producer on-site realized that getting new passports for them under the TAR time schedule would be close to impossible.

I was wondering how they would go about getting the new passports and the time frame. Would TAR cover the cost since they have no money? Also wonder if they'll receive the new passports in time to make it to the finish line with the other eliminated teams.

Well assuming the pre-season information about one team making an error that prevents them from being at the finish line is true, I'd assume they won't be there.

I wonder how long they had to wait before they could get the passports replaced and leave? Hopefully that will be addressed in their post-boot interviews.

Given that the cameraman noticed that he left things in the cab, I wonder the cameraman didn't contact the on-site TAR producer to have the cab identified and retrieve their passports and money for them. They're out of the Race, but I have a notion they got those things back, possibly with production team involvement.

I wonder how many times the cameramen wish that they could talk to the racers....especially if they like the racers they're with. Also, I wonder if the racers ever see where the camera is pointing, when something is lost, hidden, misplaced, or hard to find.

It's possible that the cameraman didn't actually see the bag being left behind. I know we saw the bag in a car but was it that car? What we saw could very well have been a re-enactment. The cameraman was probably busy taking care of his own material.

Since it could have been a re-enactment, it's pretty difficult to speculate what we would have done because we don't know when Dallas realized his mistake.

I would have stayed put, and hope the driver came back. Otherwise, I would have been flailing my hands trying to get his attention. Although I'm not clear whether he noticed this as soon as the taxi drove away.

It seems like he noticed it soon (but too long) afterwards.

Agreed, I'd have one team member stay put in case the cab comes back and have the other team member contact the cab company (provided they remembered it) and hope it turns up quickly.

Running the Race without passports was a short-term option to complete the leg, but having no money made even that very difficult.

When I traveled overseas, my passport and important ID documents were always with me on my person and tucked away where pickpocketing it would be very difficult. (Or in the hotel room safe, if I really didn't need to be carrying it around.) I'd never put it in my pack or a loose pouch.

Editing made it hard to tell but it seemed as if Dallas noticed the mistake very quickly. I would have run as fast as I could in the last direction I saw the taxi go - they mentioned the traffic was bad, I would have hoped the taxi got caught in some and I might find him.

Run like hell after the taxi yelling and waving my arms! Get someone to help me too. Then try to somehow find the cab company. Not give up and walk away that's for sure!

That was horrible and really a stupid mistake. I guess that could happen to anyone but like others have mentioned - your i.d. and money are the most important things you have - especially while traveling - and I am incredibly careful with them. I remember thinking, "well Dallas, that's the last time your Mom lets you out on your own!" Jeez!!!! What a horrible mistake and what a shame! I was HORRIFIED to see Dum and Dumber still in the race!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ACK!!!!!!

Foreign country, racing around doing things that could be seen as strange, probably a good idea to have identification on you. And since the racers were split from their partners for what looked like a pretty good distance, it was probably just a good idea for them each to have their own passport with them.

LAST EDITED ON 12-02-08 AT 08:48 AM (EST)

To be completely honest, I can't say I would have done anything differently than they did. As a few have mentioned, I'm sure there was much editing, and could have been long discussions about what to do, where to go, etc, before they decided to continue on with the race.

They were being filmed for a nation-wide/world-wide event, and what better camera time than just finishing up the race like 2 troopers, then running around like 2 chickens with their heads cut off, going through Russians Red Tape, trying to find something that may or may not ever come back?

My greatest consolation is that, because this show is being filmed and watched by millions, NO ONE will dare try to utilize those passports, ID's, to steal anything from D&T, or worse-case scenario, that could end up in the hands of would-be terrorists. Life is just not fun anymore! Look how close these guys came to being in India just before that whole city was taken under sieize!! Maybe they weren't close, but in my eyes, too close for comfort!!

Things like this, and the Mumbai seize could end TAR for good. Let's hope it doesn't. I don't fault Dallas for what happened. He was focused on winning so much that he made a horrible mistake (a million dollar one) that will haunt him forever, and had to be shared with all those people who watched.

In any case, I think I would have just 'assumed' the powers that be in the production part of the show, would help me eventually get my stuff back. So, why not just try to finish it up and do my best to win the money?? Take those lemons and make, well, you know.....

ETA: maybe something like this is gone over before the race even starts?? I would hope so!

I thought that the clue specified that Dallas had to take his passport and ALL their money. When he caught up with Toni, they turned to Dan to ask for 10 bucks but then realized he wouldn't have any money because Andrew had it all. I assumed that the person completing the roadblock needed the money for their taxi to the apartment bldg.

I actually thought that the major mistake made by Dallas and Toni was having Dallas do the roadblock in the first place. It was clearly not physical, and I think Toni would have come up with the number 62 much faster - without the help of Tina.

I suspect most teams keep their important items in their TAR fanny pack. This would include their passports, money, and any clues they need to keep until the mat.

I wasn't paying attention before this challenge, but it sounds like Toni was carrying the fanny pack throughout most of the race, but upon realizing that Dallas would be treking around a bit on this Road Block she passed it on to him. He wasn't used to carrying it, and unfortunately forgot it.

When I was a kid I used to leave things around. I have forgotten jackets at the movies, umbrellas on the bus, etc. But for many years now I have made it a point every time I leave a place (hotel, bus, restaurant, taxi) to double check that I am not leaving anything. I always do this, and the double check has paid off on many occassions.

Say Toni and Dallas were able to fininsh the tasks and make it to the Pit Stop before Ken and Tina. Would Phil have checked them in assuming he knew about the passport issue and then eliminate Ken and Tina? As I was watching the show I kept wondering what would happen if they did make it to the pit stop.

27. "RTVW interview"
Here is the RTVW interview with Toni and Dallas.

It is an awesome interview - longer than usual and very informative. Dallas talks about how he lost the bag and why he couldn't chase down the taxi. They talk about the begging and how the entire day went and explains about all the other problems they had in Russia. (And Dallas is still dating Starr.) His passport was turned in to the embassy, but they couldn't make the flight everyone else was on.

I *heart* Dallas and Toni even more now. They had a great attitude towards the race and the other racers.

And the best line of the interview was from Toni, "Well at first we went to Dan and thought we'd get some money from him, but he didn't have the money, we knew Andrew did. And, to be honest, knowing how long it would take Dan and Andrew to complete a task was not something we should sit around and wait for because that could take forever." LOL

But poor Dallas (and Toni). Their last name is Imbimbo!

As soon as I noticed I would have raised hell in the middle of the street to get noticed and get anyone (even a private car) to be chasing after the cab.
You can lose everything but not your travel documents. No way. Also that's what the fanny packs are for. Always keep the important documents close to you (heck I even put it in my money belt if the place is too dodgy).

From the looks of it the camera crew couldn't have noticed something was amiss or they would have showed the footage of it.

Glad they got it back fast.
