"Signs of Survival: Cambodia"
LAST EDITED ON 10-20-15 AT 03:55 PM (EST)

The Premise

You cannot change who you are. Eventually your true nature will win out — especially when you’re deprived of food and energy and you’re out in the open, trying to figure out a way to get along with people you don’t know if you can trust. We all have our set reactions, and that’s hard to suppress. If I’m a born leader, it’s hard for me to take a back seat. If I’m a follower by nature, it’s hard for me to lead. ~ Jeff Probst

Ah, Aries!

I do so love to watch them play the Game. And Jeff Varner’s performance thus far has been much more than worth the price of admission to this Fall’s offering.

I only wish that I had watched Borneo in its entirety way back then. Or at some point in all the years since. Because I think that it would be so interesting to track how closely that performance mirrors that of Richard Hatch – the Game’s most notorious Aries to date – in the earlier Game. Perhaps there was a certain – characteristic – childlike delight in being naughty immediately apparent in Mr. Hatch’s portrayal that has not yet been quite so center stage in Cambodia?

So I hope that we’ll be treated to many more glimpses of gleeful misbehavior during this Season. Aries are so good at being bad – Example: Peih-Gee and the Chinese Zodiac Puzzle in China – that it would be difficult for Second Chance’s editors to hide the trait beneath three proverbial bushel baskets for fourteen Episodes. Even if they wanted to.

However, neither Peih-Gee, Jeremy nor Jeff were good enough at being bad to win the Game that celebrates the art of delinquency. Nor was any one of their seven competitors who also had a valid chance to become their initial Season’s Sole Survivor.

So before we move on to the rest of Signs of Survival, here is its staple Seasonal snapshot of the Signs' Winning Record:

There are thirty completed Games in the Series. Six have been played with a Balanced distribution of the two sets of Elements that comprise the two natural Tribes. Fire and Air natives have won four of those Games. Earth and Water natives have won two.

Twenty-four Seasons have featured Majority | Minority Sun Sign populations. Of those twenty-four, twenty-one (88%) have been won by a Majority native. Tina (Capricorn | The Outback) , Yul (Aquarius | Cook Islands) and Jud (Gemini | Nicaragua) are the three truly remarkable exceptions.

And that means that it is extraordinarily unlikely that any one of the Earth and Water natives playing the Game this Season will become the Sole Survivor of Second Chances. A failure rate of 88% – arbitrarily imposed at the moment of casting – is a very tall mountain to climb. And that is why whether a Survivor played any given Season well or poorly is an opinion far more judiciously considered when – informed. For instance:

It is fair, I think, to be harshly critical of Stephenie LaGrossa’s performance in Heroes vs Villains. That installment of the Series was one of its six Balanced Seasons. But, in both Palau and Guatemala, Ms. LaGrossa played as a member of the Fire and Air Minority in a Season with an Earth and Water Majority. In short, she did not have a viable chance to win either of those Games.

In contrast: Rob Mariano played his first three Games in Seasons with Balanced casting schemes. And he played as a member of the Majority in Redemption Island. Rupert Boneham also had four viable opportunities to win the Game. He played as a member of the Fire and Air Majorities during Pearl Islands and Blood v Water. And in Balanced Seasons during All-Stars and Heroes vs Villains.

Note: The record of the Sun Signs’ performances within the Game that is the foundation of Signs of Survival is comprehensive. It incorporates every Season, every Tribe, every Challenge, every Twist and every Survivor (with the exceptions of Wanda and Jonathan). And it is as accurate (in its math and in its hundreds of birthdates) as I can possibly make it. So, regardless of the reader’s opinion of the efficacy of Astrology’s basic tenets, the fact remains that at the ending of twenty-one of the twenty-four Seasons that have featured Majority | Minority Sun Sign populations, a member of the Majority had become its Sole Survivor.

COMING UP!

An amazing look back at the Series' Sole Survivors.

1. "The Winners"
LAST EDITED ON 10-21-15 AT 02:57 AM (EST)

For over a decade, I've watched - and thought of - Survivor vis-a-vis the Sun Signs of its players. And yet I was astonished by this next Chart.

I suppose that's due in large part to the fact that I absorb information much more readily when it's presented to me visually. Too, it's been quite some time since I actually charted the Game's Sole Survivors (for several Seasons now I've been updating a very pretty version that doesn't actually place the Winners side-by-side and within their Element divisions). So, if you'll bear with me, I'll take a moment to explain my astonishment. And to silently applaud Survivor's Casting staff. Here's why ...

The monthly birth rates in the United States are very uniform. And I suppose that is because we have become an urban society and as a result those rates no longer reflect the Seasonal highs and lows that were prevalent when agrarian cycles greatly influenced our social lives.

So, because the Zodiac divisions are each approximately a month in length, the birth rates of the twelve Sun Signs are equally uniform. And that means that each side of the Elements equation naturally produces roughly 50% of its total population. However, as we've seen, only six of Survivor's thirty completed Games has been played with an even distribution of the Elements (each containing three Signs).

And the splits in the remaining twenty-four Games range from 55% - 45% (Blood v Water) to outrageously prejudicial advantages of 70% - 30% (Micronesia), 72% - 28% (South Pacific)and 78% - 22% (Cagayan and San Juan del Sur). Note: Cambodia's split is 60% - 40%.

So, given the breadth of the splits, the fact that some Signs are just better at the Game than are others and the fact that over the years, Casting has tapped more Virgo shoulders (the Series' high of 54) than it has those of Gemini (the Series' low of 38) one would expect to see a relatively uneven Chart of Winners.

But the fact is that Survivor's producers have tested so exhaustively and ultimately mixed their selections so inclusively that each side of that Element equation has - at the end of the 30-Season Day - won 15 Games. There is however an imbalance in the number of individuals who've won the Game: Sandra had the audacity to win ... two.

And one would expect the Cardinal Signs to produce the most Winners ... and they do. But the numbers are more even than I would have thought: Cardinal natives have won 12 Games, Fixed natives have won 10 and Mutable natives have won 8.

Seen from the perspective of the Roles, Superiors have won 13 Games, Soloists have won 9 and Subordinates have won 8. Note: When I first began compiling the Sun Sign data presented here (during Palau), I expected Soloists to run away with the contest. But it would seem that the Game is much more structure-friendly than I could ever have imagined.

So, as I've said, I find all of this quite astonishing. And I would argue that the Series' remarkable longevity can be, in large part, attributed to the genius of its casting. We all do, really, like to root for people like us.

Now, if you'll meet me on the other side of the Chart, we'll look at some of our Winners. Until I run out of those precious 20,000 minutes ...

Since I am not only running out of minutes but am also becoming sleepier with each passing one, tonight I'll begin what I really do hope will become a conversation by partnering our Winners with their Cambodia counterparts. Because I think it's not only fun. but also very informative, to think about their differences and their similarities as we consider who our next Winner might be.

Superiors

Capricorn | Tina, Tom, Rob, Denise, Cochran
Capricorn | Tasha
Cancer | Danni, JT, Sophie
Cancer | Monica, Kelly
Scorpio | Ethan
Scorpio | Kass, Kimmi
Leo | Amber, Sandra, Mike
Leo | Keith, Andrew

Subordinates

Taurus | Natalie
Taurus | Uninvited
Virgo | Chris, Parvati, Tony
Virgo | Uninvited
Pisces | Brian, Bob
Pisces | Ciera, Shirin, Woo
Gemini | Jud, Tyson
Gemini | Kelley, Spencer

Soloists

Aries | Richard, Earl, Natalie
Aries | Jeff, Jeremy, Peih-Gee
Sagittarius | Vecepia
Sagittarius | Vytas
Libra | Aras
Libra | Joe, Abi-Maria, Terry
Aquarius | Kim, Todd, Yul, Jenna
Aquarius | Stephen

And to begin another conversation that I hope you'll join:

My Favorite Winners

Yul and Todd | Air | Aquarius | Fixed | Soloist

From the Aquarius Profile: Noted for their altruistic and progressive natures, Aquarius possess strong-willed, forceful and attractive personalities that present themselves as one or the other of two core types: the first shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the second exuberant, lively and exhibitionist. Both types are humane, frank, serious-minded, genial, refined and often ethereal and idealistic. The last quality, however, is tempered with a sensible practicality.

I don't think that there could be a closer match between Profile and Persons than there is between The Aquarius Profile and Yul and Todd. I think of Yul as the wickedly intelligent quiet man who walked through a minefield with the artistry of a ballet master. And I think of Todd as a wickedly smart minefield.

The two won their Games very differently. But, I don't think that any other Winners have ever won it more legitimately. Yul and Todd earned the million.

A bit more from the Profile: The Sun in Aquarius has been called the “rebel” of the Zodiac because of their total commitment to their unique vision. They’re uncompromisingly anchored in their own lives and grant that same autonomy to others ...

So, while the Aquarian nature is known as eccentric, that is only because it follows that personal golden thread of inspiration to the limits ... And while this sometimes leads to great achievement, there’s always a chance that it can also lead to isolation ... Their subtle rebellion most usually manifests itself in unconventional dress or grooming, erratic behaviors and wry (devastating) sarcasm/

Too, despite the magnetic, forthcoming and open personality of the extrovert Aquarius and the humanistic traits of both types, neither makes friends readily ... and are sometimes accounted condescending and cold ... (They) are fiercely independent ... and ... dislike interference by others, however helpfully intended, and will accept it only on their own terms.

I am fascinated by the contrasts between Todd's relationship with Amanda (Fire | Leo) and Yul's with Becky (Earth | Virgo). As I am with Stephen's in-game relationship with JT (Water | Cancer). So, I am really looking forward to watching the alliance between Stephen (who is obviously on the Yul side of the Aquarius personality divide) and Jeremy (Fire | Aries) play out.

Three More Favorites

JT | Water | Cancer | Cardinal | Superior
and
Sandra | Fire | Leo | Fixed | Superior
and
Tony | Earth | Virgo | Mutable | Subordinate

7. "Cambodia's Survivors"
LAST EDITED ON 11-03-15 AT 01:00 PM (EST)

Cambodia’s Minority

Tasha | Earth | Capricorn

Survivor, it is repeated insistently and often, is a social Game. And there is no Sign more dedicated to society – to hierarchal structure – than Capricorn. Or – given that Capricorn are quintessentially Company Men and Women – more determined to lead. So, unless Tasha was comfortably settled in a pre-game alliance that afforded her a prominent or commanding role to play – or is able to construct a safe haven for a coalition of Water and Air Signs seeking shelter from Survivor’s psychological storms – this is going to be a far more difficult Season for Tasha than was Cagayan. Because …

She is the lone practical Earth native and the sole executive personality in the group. She is surrounded by a sea of emotional Water, impetuous Fire and – with the exception of the ever-pragmatic Aquarius, Stephen – vacillating Air natives. And subtlety, empathy and humility are not Capricorn’s long suits. Unfortunately – condescension, bouts of melancholy, arrogance and a tendency to sarcasm and petulance – can be.

However, Capricorn are usually much too disciplined to display overt anger. And, for Tasha, that may be – well into the Game – a saving grace.

Note (to belabor the obvious): Tina, the only Earth or Water Sign to win the Game in a Fire and Air Majority Season is, likeTasha, a Capricorn.

Note: Following Jeff Varner's boot in Episode Four, I posted the following comments in the East Coast Spoiler's Thread ...

As much as I hated to see Jeff Varner leave the Season and - given her manner during her interview with Parvati Shallow following her exit from Cagayan - as much as I am certain that I would dislike Tasha (Earth | Capricorn), I do admire her yeoman-like work with Abi-Maria. 'Managing' a Libra is no easy task.

ETA: This isn't the Tasha Fox Interview with Parvati Shallow that I referenced above. But it is, I think, from beginning to end an interesting one. Not least, because of this exchange:

TV Guide First things first. What is Tony's secret to making people not vote for him?!

Tasha Tony is still in the game because he has two people in his alliance who know their roles. Woo is the enforcer, so he just pretty much goes with what Tony tells him to do. And then Trish is the cleanup woman. Even if she doesn't know what's going on, no matter what, she'll clean it up for him and make sure everything's okay. So when you have two people in your alliance who really don't necessarily care to take charge and they play their roles, that's how you stay in the game. If I had a Trish and a Woo, I'd still be in the game too.

Note: Trish is, like Abi-Maria, a Libra. And Woo is, still, the same Pisces that he was in Cagayan ..

And for these concluding exchanges:

TV Guide Out of the remaining players, is there anyone who wouldn't get your vote if they made it to the final three?

Tasha Yeah. If Kass made it to the final three, she definitely would not get my vote. Everyone else, as a juror, if they give me a good story and give me a good narrative, then I would consider voting for them. But Kass, absolutely not. I hold grudges, and I'm a Capricorn, so it's just in my nature. I wouldn't be able to forgive her even if I wanted to.

TV Guide She was the first person to do a major flip, early on in the season.

Tasha Yeah. And in my opinion, unnecessarily. But hey, if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have been able to show how great I am strategically and physically. So, thanks, Kass.

Note: And I would submit that Tasha is, still, the same Capricorn that she was in Cagayan. However, Tasha was far - far - more likely to win Cagayan than she is to become the Sole Survivor of Cambodia. In short, the overwhelming odds are that her 'role players' have come much too late in Tasha's Survivor day.

Monica and Kelly | Water | Cancer

I’m very fond of the Cancer personality. My husband of fifty years was a Cancer native. And although I was often baffled – and sometimes frustrated – by his patience and calm, when all was said and done this Fire native found those attributes wonderfully reassuring. So it has never surprised me that the Water Sign is among the three most successful during the Tribal phase (F1 to F10) of Fire and Air Majority Seasons . Reference: Cirie Fields is a Cancer native.

But during the final, individual stage of the Game, voter-friendly Cancer playing in a Fire and Air Majority Season are quickly dispatched. And the Cancer line falls quickly to the bottom of the Chart. In fact, of the thirteen Cancer natives who have played in completed Fire and Air Majority Seasons, only one has arrived at F3: But that one is … Kelly.

Cancer is, of course, the Zodiac’s maternal Sign. And, like all Water Sign natives, Cancer are incredibly intuitive and soothingly empathetic. But this Head of Household personality also harbors a trait that – because it is in such sharp contrast to Cancer’s predominant familial warmth – always does catch me by surprise: Cancer natives can be bitingly sarcastic, rude and hurtful when pushed far enough. And they never forgive or forget an insult. Too, Cancer tend to often be maddeningly private. They despise open conflict and will simply – leave it. Just walk away. Or, in one memorable Gabon moment, just row away. Or discover, in the middle of a Palau Challenge, a sudden, urgent need to rearrange his skirt.

And, as the three Cancer who have won the Game have proven, their considerable parental instincts do not prevent them from snatching $1,000,000 from the mouths of trusting babes. Just not this Season.

Note: I think that if I had to choose one word to describe the Cancer personality, it would be observant. And in Survivor’s environments that trait is immortalized by the inordinate frequency with which the cameras capture Cancer natives … in the background. So, although Cancer’s footprint in the Game is certainly not omnipotent, it sometimes feels as though it is omnipresent.

Kimmi and Kass | Water | Scorpio

Each of the four Elements shelters one Sign (of three) whose natives have an abysmal Survivor track record. For Fire that Sign is Sagittarius. For Air it has become Libra. For Earth it is Taurus. And for Water it is Scorpio.

And no group has a worse record than do the Scorpio women. Cast far more frequently than their male counterparts (66% of the Game’s Scorpio veterans are women), they have developed some very bad habits. Not the least of which is the unfortunate tendency to be among the very earliest members to be expelled from their Tribe. And from the Game. For instance:

Francesca has the dubious distinction of being the only Survivor to be the first person expelled from her Tribe and the Game … twice. And, during Blood v Water, Candice managed to be cast into the fires of Redemption before a single Challenge was decided or a solitary Tribal Council convened.

And then consider Stephanie Dill, Janet, Dolly, Jolanda, Brianna, Tina Scheer, Mary, Roxanne, Sarah Dawson and Katie Hanson, Stacey Powell and Valesay Collins. And, of course, Kimmi.

No Scorpio woman has reached F3 during a Fire and Air Majority Season. In fact, no Scorpio woman has reached the Jury during a Fire and Air Majority Season. And only Susie – playing as a member of the Earth and Water Majority in Gabon – has ever faced a Jury.

But you have only to read the Scorpio Profile to begin to understand why their tribemates often find the Scorpio within their midst more than a little threatening:

Scorpio is the Sign of genius. It is also the most dynamic and forceful of the Zodiac’s twelve personalities. Scorpio are intense, often intellectually unconventional, fascinated by intrigue, possessive of their families, friends and allies , ferocious with their enemies, easily offended, painfully blunt, deeply sensitive and – no matter the outer trappings of their social status – born leaders who relate to others only in that capacity.

Jeff Probst, the author of the quote at the top of this page, is a Scorpio.

And Scorpio are, like Aries, very good at being bad. But there is an unmistakable difference in the tenor of their misdemeanors. There is a mischievous, often comic, quality to Aries’ schemes. And, almost always, an unsettling undertone of malice in Scorpio’s plotting.

So, although I would have been happy to see Kass win the Game in Cagayan and want her (and Kimmi) to do well in this new Season, I’ve been almost disappointed – but not at all surprised – that Bayon was spared the drama of a Challenge defeat and its subsequent Tribal Council. There was such a conflict-and-chaos-pregnant cast of characters craftily assembled there!

Note: I do think, though, that there was very probably more than a little surprise in Koh Rong when, given Ta Keo's lemons, Jeff Varner bootlegged lemonade …

Ciera, Shirin and Woo | Water | Pisces

Well! These three certainly underscore the point that the Fire and Air Signs don’t have a corner on the good-at-being-bad market …

But, after watching Pisces play the Game for twenty Seasons, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is little else to be expected from what I consider to be the Game’s – and the Zodiac’s – most contradictory personality other than the unexpected. And I think if you’ve read the Pisces Profile you will understand what I mean. And, if you haven’t yet read it, I encourage you to do so.

However, in all of the Profile’s meticulous detail, there is only ½ of one sentence that offers even a hint of the mayhem that these exceptionally creative, imaginative, sensitive and compassionate beings can in certain circumstances – and Survivor certainly seems to be just such a circumstance – unleash. The fragment reads: … (The Pisces) sensitivity makes them more vulnerable to escapism through addictions or personal dramas than are other Signs.

But, while Pisces’ acute sensitivity may be a well and good reason for some of the most epic of Survivor’s meltdowns, how shall we explain Woo’s pick-pocketing, Ciera’s symbolic matricide and Shirin’s buttocks-baring? Not to mention Jon’s not-really-gone-gram, Bob’s fatal – to Randy - fallalery and Phillip’s Stealth R Us? Pisces’ exceptional creativity? …

In short: Pisces are dreamers. Quiet. Normally calm. Artistic. Charmingly reserved. As their Profile says of them (in part):

Pisceans are deservedly popular with all kinds of people in part because their easygoing, affectionate, malleable and submissive natures offer no threat or challenge to stronger and more exuberant characters. But they will not be able to maintain for very long friendships or associations with those who are too materialistic.

As the last of the twelve Zodiac Signs, Pisces is said to contain aspects of them all. This makes the Pisces Sun so changeable as to appear not to have one singular identity. It's as if they merely touch down in this human reality and remain only long enough to try on a few personas … And because their natures are often too otherworldly for practical purposes – they tend to exist emotionally rather than rationally and instinctively rather than intellectually – the nine-to-five life is not easy for them.

As a consequence, Pisces function most successfully when they are engaged in narrowly-focused pursuits. Complex routine and the extraordinary discipline required by the arts are comfortable to them – even soothing. And usually always securely about them – so palpable as to be almost visible - is their cocoon of privacy and an aura of secrecy.

Yet there is something about the Game – perhaps it is the suspension of ordinary social norms and with that the freedom to indulge fantasies - that has caused its Pisces to contribute far more than their fair share of memorably furious, flamboyant, irreverent – zany – players.

A couple of contradictory Piscean behaviors that I am fascinated to watch play out … Season after Season:

Pisces go to great lengths to adhere to social norms. To the myriads of mundane rules that permit the world to continue going ‘round. And they are quite irritated when others interrupt their reveries or threaten their security by breaking those rules. However, they often exhibit a remarkable indifference to their own transgressions of commandment-level communal crime. And so, if they sin at all, Pisces more often than not sin … big. Before they go to Ponderosa.

Too, for Pisces, inclusion – alliance – is far more than a strategy. The Sign’s natives inherently crave the sanctuary and nurture of hierarchies. So, they will usually be among a Season’s first to seek out – and quickly tuck themselves into – the cozy center of an approving group. And, they will work very hard to retain that approval in order to remain there for the duration. Pisces dread and abhor being left alone.

But, as James Clements once explained, Pisces also inherently prefer to be let alone: to work, or putter - or scheme -in solitude. Or – remembering Sugar and Bob – with another Pisces.

And it is from within the sheltered eye of an alliance that Pisces are most successful in the Game. Because – Brian Heidik notwithstanding – while that something about the Game can often propel them to one sort of prominence or other within it, these Water Sign natives are not natural Leaders/Superiors. Again, from their Profile:

The challenge to Pisces natives … is to somehow integrate their affinity with the more subtle planes into constructive working relationships. Fortunately, Pisceans are usually versatile and intuitive; quickly master new skills; observe and listen well; and are receptive to new ideas and atmospheres … And bringing structure to the vast imagination and shades of emotion flowing within the Pisces nature is a great achievement …

Too, many Pisces are remarkably wise and self-sacrificing when it comes to helping the vulnerable or those down on their luck. But this noble trait can take them down a path of being used and abused before they learn to set strong boundaries. And they are better working either by themselves or in subordinate positions. Most would be afraid to manage more than a small department, worrying always that they would fail in a crisis.

And for example:

I’ve introduced each of several Seasons of Signs of Survival with this succinct observation of the core reality of human behavior by Jeff Probst – You cannot change who you are. – and I can’t think of a Survivor more illustrative of the observation’s wisdom than Shirin Ooskoi, Senior Director of Product Management for Yahoo.

So, here she is. First, with Xfinity’s Gordon Holmes before World’s Apart began filming.

And, in her very last answer, I think you’ll be able to recognize the symbolic moment when Shirin – who has been, indisputably, wildly successful as a Manager of Products – as opposed to being wildly successful as a Manager of Persons – first tosses Mr. Probst’s cautionary tale right out her Survivor window:

Gordon: Yahoo Product Manager sounds super important. What does it entail?

Shirin: It means that you’re like the CEO of your own product. You do everything from conception to launch to post -launch. You have an idea and a vision and you work with Designers and Engineers. You work with Marketing and PR. You work with Users to collect their feedback. You figure out what’s missing in people’s lives, then you fill that gap for them.

Gordon: Much like someone would want to do on Survivor. How many people are under you?

Shirin: (Laughs) I run the org of Yahoo Answers, so while I’m not their direct manager, I’m probably running a hundred people. A hundred people are executing my vision.

Gordon: Keeping a hundred people focused can’t be an easy task. Can that leadership apply to the game?

Shirin: Oh, yeah. Another thing about being a Product Manager is that you don’t have people reporting to you, So you have to lead by influence.

Gordon: How can you win people over in a situation where there is no corporate structure and there’s a goal that everyone shares, but only one person can achieve?

Shirin: That’s very similar to how it was at Google. There’s nobody I can go to and say, They’re not doing what I want them to do! At the end of the day the Engineers were king and they could do whatever the – (Expletive Deleted) – they wanted to do. It’s really about a couple of key things …

My style is really befriending people and getting them to believe in me and trust in me. Not that they really can or should, but at the end of the day if you win someone over on a friendship level they’re going to have a much harder time – (Expletive Deleted) – you over. And you’re going to be able to have more frank conversations to get them to do what you want them to do. I don’t want to be bossy and tell people what to do. These people are going to be very type-A..

Gordon: Oh…so you’ve watched this show?

Shirin: I’ve watched a ton. I want to have a one-on-one relationship with every player in this game. At best, that would be an actual friendship with all of them. And at worst, I want to have a working relationship with them. I don’t give a – (Expletive Deleted) – what I feel about them. I wanna have groups. A threesome here and go-to twosomes over here. I’m going to be constantly running these numbers in my head and adjusting as necessary.

And so, Shirin, who spent most of her minutes with Mr. Holmes explaining that she had no group – much less, groups – at either Google or Yahoo, obviously determined that she would – (Expletive Deleted) – have them in Nicaragua. And somewhere along her way to her CBS biography, Shirin also evidently stumbled across a rather astonishing theretofore unannounced skill-set: I practice “voting people out” in real life and succeed, she declared.

Note: Where?, one might humbly ask.

Now, fast-forwarding to Ms. Oskooi’s interview with Josh Wigler at Parade following her abrupt termination from Second Chances, it would appear that, although I’m unaware of any change in her professional capacities, she was just as determined to have her very own – (Expletive Deleted) – groups in Cambodia:

Josh: In the weeks after leaving Cambodia, I thought about the outcome of Second Chance more times than I can possibly count now. I spent weeks wondering who was voted out next after Vytas, figuring there were only three real possibilities on Ta Keo: Terry Deitz, Kelly Wiglesworth and Woo Hwang, the three Shelter People who were on the wrong side of the first vote.

Never once did I imagine that Shirin would go next. Leaving that first Tribal Council, she looked like she was in an extreme position of power — but that’s not accounting for the Jeff Varner of it all.

Shirin: He started gunning for Spencer after we voted Vytas out … and nobody liked living with Abi-Maria, so she was also on the chopping block. Now all the sudden I’m looking at voting out either Spencer or Abi, and I’m thinking, ‘This is wrong …

Josh: After reaching that conclusion, Shirin felt she had to turn the tables against Varner — and in order to pull that off, she felt that she needed to work with the Shelter People she already voted against. But Kelley Wentworth, one of Shirin’s closest allies, advised against the move.

Shirin: She knew those people would not work with me and they would rat me out. I was like, ‘No! No, I can do this, because this is right! This is rational! He screwed them over, now he’s screwing us over. If they’re rational players, they will do this!’ And Wentworth was like, ‘No, don’t do it! … and ultimately, Varner still had them … They ratted me out to Varner, … That’s when he decided to vote me out instead of Spencer …

In my mind, (Spencer), Kelley Wentworth and I were the only rational, calm players on that tribe …

Josh: In the pre-game, Shirin told me about two prospective alliances she wanted to forge: Shirin’s Army, inspired by Albus Dumbledore, and The Babe Brigade. What she ended up with was a mixture of the ideas, prominently featuring prospective brigadier Abi-Maria Gomes — someone Shirin could not gush about enough when we spoke at Ponderosa.
“I think Abi sees what her flaws are from last time,” she told me, “and she wants to correct that reputation that she has, and I want to be a part of that.”

Shirin’s early notions about Abi-Maria were out the window as soon as the game actually began.

Shirin: I realized it wasn’t going to work on minute zero of landing on the beach … Abi, in front of everyone, grabs my arm and says: ‘I don’t trust Peih-Gee. She’s evil.’ Like, what? … She hated Kelly Wiglesworth because she reminded her of Denise. She hated Terry because Terry reminded her of Michael Skupin. It just did not stop.

Josh: I ask Shirin why she chose to work with Abi in the first vote, given her minute zero impressions of the Survivor: Philippines fifth-place finisher. Shirin says it’s because she did not have a choice.

Shirin: Half that tribe was not willing to work with me,” she says. “Vytas, Woo, Wiglesworth, Terry — the four of them were never, ever, ever going to work with me … I can only work with what I got, and what I had was Kelley Wentworth, Spencer and Abi.”

b]Josh: Peih-Gee joined Shirin’s Army for the Vytas vote, but she also contributed to the big dramatic moment that helped take Shirin down.

Shirin: In that scene where she starts going at it with Peih-Gee and I walk away, it was literally one hour after I had my total emotional meltdown,” says Shirin. “The reason I was talking to Peih-Gee in the first place was because I needed some emotional comfort. Unfortunately, it turned into Peih-Gee saying some – (Expletive Deleted) – about Abi … Abi overheard it … Abi blew up … and I had just had a meltdown. I couldn’t deal with it in that moment. I just couldn’t take it anymore! …

My thought with Abi is that I would need her for the first couple of votes, and then we would get rid of her, because there’s no way you can carry this all the way to the end. You cannot control this. You cannot put a leash on this. There’s just nothing you can do with this. This is insane. There’s no logic.

And so, I rest my case. The one in which I argue that, far more often than not, it is a critical mistake to attempt to invent a new personality in the crisis environment that is Survivor. Doing what comes naturally works much … better.

Sometimes even Jeff Probst gets it right.

And it is going to be fascinating to see just how far the born-to-lead Capricorn – Tasha – manages to carry the innately independent young woman who she now thinks of as her Libra. And with what result. As fascinating, I think, as is the fact that, in Abi-Maria, both she and Shirin got exactly what they wished for …

Note: It would be unfair to Shirin (and to Tasha) to leave them without pointing out again that, in both her Seasons, Shirin has now played as a Minority native and, in neither, had a realistic opportunity to win the Game. Tasha was a member of the Majority Earth Signs in Cagayan. An advantage that she didn’t have in Cambodia.

And, just after my comments regarding Second Chances' Majority Fire and Air Signs (on the other side of the Chart just below - first mentioned way back up the page - that depicts the Season's players arranged in their natural Tribes), there is another Chart that I hope will present a clear picture of just how many viable Chances to win the Game each of these returning players enjoyed – or didn’t – from the moment they were first cast as Survivors.

Cambodia’s Majority

Jeff, Jeremy and Peih-Gee | Fire | Aries

I am an unabashed fan - and often a defender - of Libra within the Game. But Abi-Maria has seriously challenged my limited good graces. Because I had barely settled into the most comfy couch in the house to watch three Aries - who I consider the Zodiac's greatest gift to Survivor - entertain me long into the Fall before she had single-handedly ousted two of the Season's three Aries' natives from Cambodia. So, I am not pleased ... about that. However, the Libra-fan-and-defender niche of me thinks that she is playing a truly amazing Game.

Note: Viewed through the prism of its archetypical personalities, one of the Game's most confounding attributes is the topsy-turvy effect that its crisis - inordinately competitive - environment has on the Signs' ordinary relationships. For instance:

Ordinarily natives of the same Sign have a natural affinity. As do the natives of the same Element and of its complementary Element. So that, out there in the much wider world - using Earth and Water as our template - Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo usually get along well with each other. As they do with the natives of the three Water Signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. While the relationships of the natives of those six Signs with the natives of the six Fire and Air Signs are often far more prickly. And it is that push and pull of personality that makes our much wider world go ... round.

But, in the artificially-narrow physical, psychological and social landscapes of Survivor's wicked game of Musical Chairs - where there is always one less natural place than natural person to fill it, the one-too-many-of-type have nowhere else to go to find a seat at the table.

So, while we do routinely see simpatico/symbiotic relatioships between compatible/complementary personalities develop within the Game, it is also true that internecene conflicts become more the norm than the exception. For instances: Kimmi's (Scorpio | Water | Superior) dispatch of Monica (Cancer | Water | Superior) and Abi-Maria's (Libra | Air | Soloist) full-on frontal assaults of Vytas (Sagittarius | Fire | Soloist), Peih-Gee (Aries | Fire | Soloist) and Jeff (Aries | Fire | Soloist).

That said, let’s gather up the Aries shorthand, shall we?

And I’ve put Aries in a tidy package for us because I think that, if there is a Perfect Storm of personality traits, behaviors – and attitude – all wrapped up and tied with a bow just for Survivor – the Game and the Show – it is Aries. And, as I did in my comments about Water | Scorpio earlier, I really do encourage you to click on the link and read (or review) the Fire | Aries Profile. Because I think that when you do, you’ll agree with me that it – truly – makes you want to go watch an Aries play the Game.

Note: I recommend China, where we first met Courtney, Peih-Gee and Leslie Nease, Christian Radio Talk Show Host. All together. All at once.

Not that Aries win the Game all that often. Capricorn (5), Aquarius (4) and Leo (4) – I’m playing Aries | Max Dawson, here – have produced more Sole Survivors. And not that you always like them. For instance, Crystal comes readily to mind. However, I like Randy. Perversely, I really do.

But, most Aries who’ve played the Game so own it – right up until the time that they leave it – that their embrace of its insanities is infectious. And Aries often leave abruptly: they are easily bored. And when they are bored – and because they adore conflicts and controversies and mountains to cross and dragons to slay – they’ll do their damnedest to create competitions from whole cloth. For themselves and/or for everyone around them.

Below are two (I think, hilarious) examples of the mayhem that a bored Aries can manage to make of just one little ... chicken:

And because Aries are always so supremely confident that they – or their friends and allies – will win the fight that, more often than not, they started, Aries are often thought of as Leaders (with a corporate “L”). But, as out-front and eager to make mincemeat of the task or to vanquish the enemy as they invariably are, they are not. Leaders. As their Profile makes abundantly clear:

Adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic and full of energy, Aries is a trailblazer: open to new ideas and a lover of freedom. These individuals welcome opposition and will not be diverted from their purposes except by their own impatience or boredom. Gifted with a direct, fiery nature that puts them one step ahead of the crowd, the childlike enthusiasm of these entrepreneurs and revolutionaries is infectious, and their ability to rouse others' interest in a project or cause is unparalleled. They’ll often take charge of a situation and their sense of certainty usually makes others fall in line. But the Mars-ruled are initiators – not perpetuators

Because their approach to life is somewhat simplistic, what Aries can accomplish without a lot of distracting nuances and complexities to slow him down is staggering. The Sun in Aries craves excitement and their restless spirits are in constant pursuit of the next ‘big thing’.

Don't, however, put them in a position where they'll have to deal with complicated emotions or with a problem requiring delicate handling or subtlety. They're simply not equipped for it.

And it is also important to remember that Aries do not assess themselves or others by hierarchal standards. These are individualists who will fiercely defend their independence and fully expect that others will do the same. So, they tend to view their own relationships with social structures more complex than a partnership as marriages of temporary convenience … at best. And their loyalties are more often and more readily – and certainly more sincerely – pledged to a momentarily common goal or to a self-centric ambition than to the welfare of a ... group.

So, by now, I’m certain that it comes as no surprise to you that the second Sign that I most hope to see in each new cast – following my own, Sagittarius, but slightly ahead of Scorpio – is Aries. And I was particularly pleased when three of the four Aries nominated to play this Season made the cut. I was not, however, terribly disappointed when Max Dawson did not.

But, there is now only one Aries remaining in the Game. And as I recently said elsewhere on the Board:

At the beginning of the Season I thought that a Fire native would win the Game. I still do. And we're down to three: Keith, Andrew (who I thought would be that Sole Survuvor but who is now really beginning to concern me) and ... Jeremy. And I think that this next Episode - Play to Win - may tell us if that Fire native might instead be Jeremy. And I suspect that our most telling clues will be named Kimmi and Kass.

Because ...

Jeremy is concerned with keeping a phalanx of strong, male players as a shield against his own boot. So he isn't going to challenge Kimmi if she becomes annoyed enough with - or feels her prominent position in the Bayon pecking order threatened enough by - any player who doesn't fit that description - to lobby for her/his elimination.

Particularly since allowing Kimmi or other members of his alliance(s) to make those choices keeps Jeremy's hands - in comparison - clean. And sometimes the most expedient path to the $1,000, 000 is the one that a strong - and smart - player enables others to make for him.

Example: Earl Cole. Who didn't win a single Challenge. And who received only a single vote. Until he got them all.

Note: I also said, before the Season began, that I thought that Cambodia would be more about partnerships than about large, cumbersome alliances. And Jeremy has entered into several two-person pacts that - to players looking for the safety of a large alliance - all together, appear to be one. But that, in fact, may afford Jeremy the luxury of playng those partnerships down - one by one - until only one is left between him and the million.

Andrew and Keith | Fire | Leo

Born Leaders (with a corporate "L"), more wealth is accumulated by Leo natives than by the natives of any other Sign. However, there is a decidedly familial - paternalistic - head-of-household undercurrent to Leo's guidance so that they often appear to be much more mentor than executive. And because of that innate air of superiority | authority, other assertive and inherently independent personalities sometimes tend to think of Leo as overbearing and, well, partronizing.

And it is true that no matter the personal or professional circumstance of the Leo - or the degree of grandeur of his or her private or public stage - it is difficult to imagine that any intimate would ever use the word humble to describe this proud and colorful - expansive and inclusive - and usually warm and generous - personality. For instance, here are some famous Leo whose names you will recognize:

Barak Obama, Fidel Castro, Napolean Bonaparte, Bill Clinton (and Monica Lewinsky ... ). Henry Ford and Mark Cuban. Tom Brady, Tim Tebow and Magic Johnson.
Doc Holiday, Annie Oakley and Davey Crockett. Andy Warhol, Louis Armstrong and Lucille Ball. Amelia Earhart and Neil Armstrong. Coco Chanel. Hope Solo.
Arnold Schwartzenegger. Cecil B. De Mille, John Ringling North and Alfred Hitchcock. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. T. E. Lawrence. J. K. Rowling. Roberto Clemente.
Peter Jennings, Benito Mussolini and ... Garrison Kellier ...
.

Quite a group, no? So, here is a brief synopsis of the Leo Profile:

At first, it’s hard not to like those with the Sun in Leo with their open hearted, friendly ways. They often enter a room as a radiant presence that causes everyone to take notice, and are skilled at “working” a crowd for best effect ...

It is a Leo’s birthright to lead, and they'll naturally assume that role without being asked. However, if that authority is questioned, they may abandon a project entirely ... poor judges of character, Leo are more disillusioned than the average if let down by those they trust.

And, since Leo simply can't function if they're not in a position to lead, they'll brood until that status has been reinstated. However, even after they discover that they've been duped or abandoned, most Leo are too big – or too proud – to retaliate ...

However ... an excessively negative Leo can be a very unpleasant human being. These Leos will not hesitate to use cunning, lies and trickery to discredit their adversaries. Narcissism, greed for flattery, bombast, pomposity and snobbish superiority can also be characteristic of Leo.

Too ... Leo ... (are) very loyal: to themselves ... (Trying) to bend the will of a Leo for the sake of a relationship ... can (be met) ... with severe resistance ... Their reputation for being ‘diva-difficult’ is well-earned..

Andrew, Keith, Troyzan and Mike Holloway were the Leo chosen by CBS to appear on the Cambodia ballots. No Leo women were included in the process. And that is, I think, a shame. Because, although I must admit that there is not a long list of Leo women who have only played the Game once who I would like to see play it again (and, I think, even fewer who would agree to put themselves through it once more), the previous two All-Star Seasons were won by Leo women and this one is not improved by their absence.

However, I also have to admit that Keith does a pretty mean impression of the laconic - and iconic - and irrepressible - Sandra - who, in Heroes vs Villains, appeared to show up at strategy conferences only long enough to make sure that it was anyone but her who was about to become the evening's Main Attraction: Leo are, blessedly, unimpressed by detail.

In fact, if Sandra had only spit a bit - and Keith would only cuss a bit more - an audio-only audience might never know the difference.

Of course, Sandra must have done more. She won two Games! But Keith doesn't seem to have that more part of a successful Leo gameplan memorized yet. And, I'm afraid, he's stickin' to the one that he does ... have memorized.

I just wish that we were seeing as much of him this Season as we did during San Juan del Sur. And I would be more than happy to sacrifice every one of Tasha's self-important, mind-numbing Confessionals between now and Christmas to make that happen ... CBS!

As for Andrew:

I've said that I think a Fire native will win this Game. And given Leo's All-Star record, I thought that Cambodia's Sole Survivor would be Andrew.

And, as much as I dislike watching her play, I was encouraged by his alliance with Tasha: Capricorn are addicted to the details of Alliance Management with which Leo would rather not be bothered. For instance: Andrew might not have put his big, fat lionine paw in the plot to boot Spencer if Tasha had been around. So, I still have some hope that - if he lives up to that line in the Leo profile - However, even after they discover that they've been duped or abandoned, most Leo are too big – or too proud – to retaliate - and manages to stay out of the immediate fray, he might yet win the Season.

Note: But, because I continue to think that Cambodia will be decided by the successes and failures of partnerships - as opposed to the records of its broader alliances - in my opinion, winning the Game would be a much more difficult task for the Leo, Andrew (Fire | Superior) than it would be for the Aries, Jeremy (Fire | Soloist).

Vytas | Fire | Sagittarius

Positive Traits
Optimistic and Freedom-loving
Curious and Sporting
Good-humored and Straightforward
Expansive and Philosophical

Negative Traits
Blindly-optimistic and Careless
Irresponsible and Superficial
Flippant and Promiscuous
Tactless and Restless

Sagittarius do not play the Game well.

Considering the performances of the Signs in all completed Seasons, only Scorpio and Pisces are more inept at reaching F10. At F4, the Mutable Fire Sign is at the very bottom of the Chart. At F3 and F1 only Taurus has a more discouraging record.

And in Fire and Air Majority Seasons - when Sagittarius has played At Home, if you will - the one bright spot in that record is its natives' success at reaching F10 behind only the Water Sign - Cancer. But, at F4, Sagittarius is right back at the bottom of the Chart. And at F3, only Cancer and the two Earth Signs - Taurus and Virgo - finish more poorly. Worse, Sagittarius is the only Fire or Air Sign never to have won Survivor in a Fire and Air Majority Season: Vecepia's Season, Marquesas, featured a Balanced casting scheme.

Note: Vytas and Shane were the only two Sagittarius to appear on the the Cambodia ballots. and I would like to think that Shane might have remained in the Game - longer.

Normally, I would spend a great deal more time talking about the Sagittarius personality - I am a Sagittarius. And perhaps, when I compose my comments about the first of Cambodia's several Tribal arrangements, I'll do that. But, the fact is that Vytas's impact on the Game was minimal at best.

So, for now, I'll encourage you to click on the link and read both the Element Profile and that of the Sign.

Note: The latter Profile is a fascinating commentary on the Sign's many contradictory, contrasting and conflicted traits and behaviors.

Kelley and Spencer | Air | Gemini

From the Air Profile:

KEYWORDS

Intellectual and Innovative
Conceptual and Analytical
Curious and Social
Cerebral and Detached

... Air Signs use their minds to make sense of their lives and for them there is more space between the life lived and the observing mind than is so with other Signs. So, to others, these individuals can appear detached, aloof, remote and cool: they’ll often attempt to talk their way through feelings – or to analyze a situation – rather than deal with the full emotional weight of the moment.

These are extremely social creatures – their curiosity keeps them ever- mingling – and their currency is their ability to link diverse social groups or individuals with their often extraordinary collections of ideas, obscure facts, gossip and knowledge ... Almost without exception ... these alert, curious and perceptive individuals are very communicative ...

And, leading with their heads, these observers of the human scene are the ‘idea’ people who ... are often able to offer an innate clarity of vision that is rare among the natives of other Signs.

However, these inventive and clever individuals will insist upon considering all sides of an equation before they decide on a course of action. And ... balance is of paramount importance to them. So ... they ... turn bitterly cold if their equilibrium is upset.

From the Gemini Profile:

Positive Traits
Adaptable and Versatile
Eloquent and Witty
Intellectual and Engaging
Charming, Youthful and Lively

Negative Traits
Nervous and Restless
Superficial and Inconsistent
Cunning and Duplicitous
Rumor-Mongering

Gemini ... (are) dual-natured, elusive, complex and contradictory. To them, life is a game that must always be full of fresh moves and continuous entertainment and free of labor and routine ... They’re great wits ...

Their good qualities are attractive and come easily to them. They are affectionate, courteous, kind, generous, and thoughtful - provided none of the activities resulting from expressing these traits interferes too greatly with their own lives and comforts ...

But be warned that like chameleons, they absorb and reflect every change in their environment and can become pessimistic, sullen, peevish and self-centered prattlers, boasters, liars and cheats if circumstances force them to struggle in any way.

Gemini have a keen and intuitive intelligence ... If faced with difficulties, they have little determination to worry at a problem until they find a solution - they will pick the brains of others.

As difficult as Survivor is for all of the Air Sign natives, the Game's illogical and chaotic landscapes are most difficult for Gemini to navigate. Essentially entertainers, communicators and teachers, they require harmony and balance about them in order to function in those capacities - to be who they are. And they have little regard for the sensibilities of others when those critical objectives are at stake.

Example: Courtney's invasion of Bruce's garden during Exile Island.

Gemini also require the shelter of alliances in order to maintain their sense of well-being and nurture. In short, Gemini within the Game are high-maintenance partners and alliance members. But, the reward for providing the calming influences that Gemini need can be great: they are often brilliant strategists who love sharing their ideas.

However, when severely challenged by the Game's environments or events, Gemini natives have provided Survivor's viewing audience with some of the Series' most astounding meltdowns and betrayals:

Examples (by name): Lex, Katie, Danielle, Lisi, Joel, Jud, Tyson ...

In contrast, Kelley and Spencer have, thus far, been relatively unremarkable this Season. Spencer seems to be dutifully fulfilling his obligation to require rescue in every Episode and Kelley seems to be content in her role of father-figure nemesis.

And I know that there is consensus that the edit has made of the two serious contenders for Cambodia's crown. I just don't see the Emperor's - or Empress's - new clothes.

Stephen | Air | Aquarius

Shortly after the voting that established Cambodia's cast, I said - in the precursor to this thread - that I thought that partnerships between Spencer and Terry - and between Stephen and Joe - might work well ...

Little, obviously, did I know. But, just as obviously, little did Stephen know.

JT is a Cancer. The Zodiac's maternal personality. A nurturer. A port in the storm of Aquarius anxieties. Until, of course, he takes the money. And pretty cruelly, at that.

But, Jeremy is the storm. And why Stephen thought that an alliance with the most Alpha of the males on the block would be just the thing to quiet his fear of the other real or imagined bullies lurking in the Game's real or imagined shadows is beyond me.

But, perhaps, persuaded by Stephen's tears, I'm rushing to a much-too-early judgement. Maybe he's brushed them away and things will go well enough for him to finish in single digits. At least, I hope so.

Because, when I first heard that he was playing, I really thought that he had a very good chance of winning in Cambodia. But I don't think that now: I have yet to see a trace of the conspiratorial delight that flashed between him and JT in Tocantins.

In any event:

Aquarius is a Fixed Sign. Stubborn. Sometimes, as the Profile says below: Intractable and Dogmatic.

Positive Traits
Friendly and Humanitarian
Progressive and Pioneering
Original and Inventive
Eccentric, Independent and Intellectual

Negative Traits
Intractable and Dogmatic
Perverse and Unpredictable
Unemotional and Detached
Isolated

However, Stephen is so obviously the second of the two Aquarius personality presentations:

Noted for their altruistic and progressive natures, Aquarius possess strong-willed, forceful and attractive personalities that present themselves as one or the other of two core types: the first shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the second exuberant, lively and exhibitionist. Both types are humane, frank, serious-minded, genial, refined and often ethereal and idealistic. The last quality, however, is tempered with a sensible practicality.

But, then there is this:

... Despite the magnetic, forthcoming and open personality of the extrovert Aquarius and the humanistic traits of both types, neither makes friends readily. However, if they are deceived their anger is terrible. And if disillusioned, Aquarius do not forgive.

So, I wonder:

If I were playing with Stephen late in the Game, would I prefer him to be sitting beside me? Or in front of me?

Abi-Maria, Joe and Terry | Air | Libra

More than any other Sign, Libra has shaped the first half of Cambodia. And more than any other player, Abi-Maria has effectively manipulated its Tribal dynamics.

So, as I did my comments regarding Sagittarius (but for very different reasons), I'm going to postpone posting my thoughts about the Libra in the Game until I discuss its Tribes.

Survivor is a Game of countless variables. But I would submit that the most crucial of them is the composition of a cast. Because, a viable chance to become a Sole Survivor can be lost before a Season begins. If you are a member of that Season's Minority ...

On the far left of the Chart above are the members of Cambodia's cast who are now playing their second Game as a member of the Minority.

Next to them are the players who played their first Game as a member of the advantaged Majority. But are now in the Minority.

The third column contains the names of the two players who are now playing their first Season as a member of the Majority.

And the final column contains the names of the ten players who are truly being given a second chance to win the Game.

OutFrontGirl, who for several years posted regularly to this Board - and who was a student of Astrology - once said that she thought that the use of the very basic and broadly-brushed Sun Sign Profiles as a spoiling tool worked because Survivor is cast to stereotypes. And I agree.

After all, the combination of Casts of sixteen to twenty contestants and a filming parameter of thirty-nine days does not lend itself to painstaking character revelation and development. So, if the Series' producers hope to capture and retain a broad. diverse and invested audience, it is critical that the Game's players exhibit readily identifiable and instantly relatable - stereotypical - traits and behaviors. As I said earlier, we all like to root for people like us. And I would add that we all like to root against those dastardly villains who are, of course, nothing like us.

Note: There is a story, told as truth, that Mark Burnett (at least in its infancy) told his staff to cast the show as though they were casting Gilligan's Island.

Repeatedly.

Of course, there is so much more to know about our individual personalities beyond the basic and the broadly-brushed. Beyond the stereotype. And, whether produced by an Astrologer or by a Psychologist or by a Psychiatrist, a professional personality inventory and assessment is designed to learn it and publish it. Most ordinarily, for a specific purpose.

For instance, a Survivor applicant undergoes an exhaustive battery of physical and psychological tests administered for the specific purpose of assessing, before the fact, how he or she will act, react and interact within the Game's environments. Of course, with this Cast, the show's producers also had an additional analytical tool: they had seen each of this Season's Survivors play the Game.

Note: I don't know if the Game's staff use Astrological profiles as a casting tool. I do know that if they have a copy of a contestant's birth certificate - with place, date and time of birth - they have all that they need to produce a Natal Chart.

So, as you look at the Tribal Charts below, it is helpful to remember that, while whether or not Survivor is unscripted may be debated, that the show is choreographed to the nth degree cannot. And I'll add that when I see overly-convenient tribal configurations purportedly produced by random draws, I'm sometimes truly amazed by fate's skill at the craft.

Remember, too, that the Roles are intended to describe the hierarchal place in which the individual is inherently most comfortable and most effective. They are not intended to be an indication of the Role(s) that a Survivor will choose to play within the Game.

Note: I think that, more often than not, it is extremely foolish for a player to elect to play the Game out of character.. I can't think of any venue more challenging for persons attempting to be something that they're not. And, historically, the Game has been won by each of the Zodiac's twelve personalities at least once. Eight of the twelve have won the Game at least twice. Capricorn has produced five Sole Survivors. So, it seems to me that the time-tested advice to be the best that you can be is never more valuable than it is at the beginning of a Survivor Season.

Cambodia As It Was

Through what is referred to as The Cold War, the bunker designed to house the most important officials of our national government in the event of a catastrophic attack or natural disaster was located beneath the sprawling Greenbrier Resort in the beautiful little town of White Sulphur Springs (Greenbrier County), West Virginia. A hop, skip and jump from our family's (un-bunkered) hunting and fishing camp in the next county over.

There, presumably, the President and his Cabinet, the Supreme Court Justices and key members of Congress would remain safe and sound and carrying-on while all sorts of bad things happened in the town and countryside around them. A circumstance made all the more probable by the fact that the location of the bunker was - at least to Southern West Virginians and therefore almost certainly to The Kremlin - an open secret. So - given that we all have our frames of reference but some are just a little more weird than others - the first thing that I thought when I'd finished the Tribal Chart above was that it looked as though Bayon was going to be The Bunker and Ta Keo was going to be The Town.

Because, no matter how I manipulated the physical match-ups of the two, the VIPs in the Bunker came out on top. And that wasn't the worst of it. Virtually all of the structural leadership was concentrated in Bayon. Ane while - given the duress of losing and subsequent Tribal Councils where there would have been virtually no supporting players to enlist or sacrifice - all of those competing Superiors would have very quickly fallen into probably petty and definitely heated rivalries that would have been so much fun to watch - half of the Tribe were innately stubborn and contrarian Fixed Sign natives - instead this Tribe of egoentric self-starters was permitted the luxury of more benign contests of social one-ups-manship. Good Lord! Even Kass was playing nice!

Note: Of course, all of this back-slapping and grand-standing was the most fertile of bud-gathering fields for the Aries - Jeremy. Because if there is anything an Aries does better than the rest of what they do so well in competitive environments it is to remain unimpressed. And singularly focused on his own goal. Which is to beat everyone at whatever Game they wish to play. In short: An Aries is even less interested in his adversary's résumé than he is in his own.

However, Bayon - and, in fact, all of Cambodia - has not been that kind to the Aquarius - Stephen. And the why of that can be simply put: he hasn't been needed. A state of affairs that has been, as we've seen, a neuroses-inducing nightmare for a brilliant man and a very skilled tactician.

The natives of all three of the Air Signs make sense of their worlds - intellectually. But, of the three, mental exercise - a dilemma to solve, a coup to execute, a big move to make - is most vital to an Aquarian. From the Profile:

Aquarius work most effectively within a group environment provided that they are recognized as having a leading role in the project. They’re tuned into a different frequency, and have a vast mindscape that seems to make them self-sufficient. In other words, they’re happy to spend time alone. Yet as a sign of paradoxes, the Aquarius is also drawn to groups and “communities.” Able to quickly identify the undercurrents of gatherings, they are adept at helping people act together to accomplish a goal. They’re usually at the forefront of a cause: often before it becomes safe or fashionable.

However, I'm typing this just before Episode Nine airs. And perhaps we're about to see Stephen, at long last, find something to do in Cambodia ...

Meanwhile, back in Town:

If we were actually told how this Season's intial Tribes were selected, I missed it. So, I've assumed that the show's producers arranged them. I mean, they certainly look like something that they would do.

In any event:

Setting Shirin and Abi-Maria aside for a moment (and we can do that because my keyboard is in West Virginia and I don't think that either one of them would know where to find that), let's begin with the lone Ta Keo with Superior credentials - Kelly (Cancer).

Cancer are, of course, innate Leaders. However, the Maternal Sign has a softer, gentler Head of Household touch. So, even if Cancer choose to play the Game overtly they are usually portrayed as more influential than commanding (even though they are instinctive practioners of the hierarchal arts). And although the Sign has given us some of the Game's most ebullient personalities (JT, Cirie and Jaime are Cancer), the Survivor stereotype (if you will) has more frequently been rather quiet and reserved (Danni, Cindy, Sophie and Josh are also Cancer). And, of course, all Cancer have that very prevalent reclusive trait.

From the Profile:

There is a private, reclusive side to every Cancer. Because of their extreme emotional sensitivity, they fear ridicule and would rather retreat than defend themselves. And there is always lurking in the background of their personalities a foreboding of disaster. As if upon some hidden cue, the Crab can suddenly retreat into the watery burrows of his inner consciousness and not be seen for days.

However, if Cancer can reconcile the personal conflict of their urge to be outgoing with the reserve that causes them to withdraw into themselves, then at best they can inspire a generation, especially the youthful part of it, by their idealism.

From the Profile:

Cancer’s emotions are as changeable as the Moon itself and their nature makes them something of an enigma, even to those closest to them. In fact, the Cancer temperament is a veritable kaleidoscope of waxing and waning feelings and during the course of a conversation, you may notice – passing fleetingly across the faces of July-born – scores of distinctively different emotions: no one ever repeated or expressed in exactly the same way. Quite simply, Cancer exude drama and these extraordinarily emotional individuals can sink into a mood and fully inhabit it, so that it seems to permeate the atmosphere around them. No other Sign has so pervasive an emotional aura as to either lift your spirits to ecstatic heights or to fill you with clouds of gloom, depending upon his mood.

And to say that Cancer has also given us some of our most dramatic players would be an understatement (Kat, Dawn, Anthony and GC come to mind).

So, although it's true that the Cirie(s) and JT(s) come along infrequently in the Series, it is also true that it is rare that a Cancer is as invisible as Kelly has been this Season.

Note: Cancer usually have an uncanny knack for being in the background. Virtually constantly. It is one of those things that I enjoy watching play out Season after Season. But Kelly has been absent almost ... everywhere and always. And, if it weren't for the fact that she lost a rowing Challenge to Gervase, I'm not sure that I would even recognize her voice - eight Episodes into the Season.

And I think that Ta Keo might have been a very different Tribe if Kelly had managed to exert the calming and unifying influenence that a Cancer brings to the table. But, for whatever reason, we were never shown Kelly as a Leader. And, as they say, I think that that made all the difference.

However, the following is also from the Cancer Profile. And I so wish that I had the time to sit down and watch Borneo from beginning to end. I'd very much like to know if what we've seen in Cambodia has been a replica of how she played the earlier Game. Because she was second only to Richard Hatch that Season and is becoming an increasing presence in Cambodia:

The stealth approach of Cancer often takes people by surprise, and many have been underestimated. They’ll protect their sensitivity by going after what they want indirectly, which can be seen as passive. (But) once crossed, the Cancer holds a grudge to infinity, so it’s hard to win back their trust.

Note: As I've mentioned, my husband was a Cancer. And I can bear personal - and emphatic - witness to that last ...

...

I've already spent a great deal of time and verbiage on the Season's Pisces in the post above that features Cambodia's players. And particularly on Shirin. Primarily because I think that the three ((including Ciera) were an interesting study in the very different ways that members of the same personality group may approach the Game.

For instance:

Woo seems to play Survivor very much as though he were fulfilling a Bucket List of Piscean Rules of Behavior.

Displaying all of the Sign's positive traits (and very few of its faults), Woo has, in both of his Seasons, tucked himself into alliances that he trusted and to whom he was loyal. To a fault. And to say that he played the Game naïvely is, I think, accurate. But Pisces are dreamers who as a general rule enjoy the Game as much as they do because of its other-worldly aura. Jonathan Penner is, I think, another Pisces who plays the Game - joyously. Bob and Brian not so much. But then cynicism is also a trademark of all three of the Water Signs..

Of course, Bob and Brian won the Game. Woo didn't. But I've always felt that Woo made the better bargain. And I'll have much more to say about Woo and Ciera later.

Because she is brilliant and imaginative - to a fault - Shirin simply over-reached. Badly. Twice. And I think that a lot of that had to do with the fact that Shirin has played a perfect Game of Survivor so many times - from within her personal Piscean cocoon within the crowd - that she is incapable of dealing with the realities of its moments when they arrive. And the personal dramas to which Pisces are so susceptible - win.

Rounding out the Ta Keo Subordinate contingent were Spencer and Kelley. Cambodia's Gemini. And because they are still in the Game, I'll have much more to say about them, too. However, before we leave these first of the Season's Tribes, it is probably important to note that Gemini is the Sign of duality. Of twins. Of two-faces. Of chameleons. They, quite literally, assimilate/absorb the prevailing moods of their immediate environments.

So, it is not that Gemini are maliciously fickle. It is that they are innately - inconstant. And, for those players dealing with them withn the Game, the following two truths can be invaluable tools:

1) Gemini will flip. So it is important to be the last person to talk to him, or her, before Tribal Council.

2) I've included Gemini with the other Subordinate Signs, not because they are particularly helpful or supportive (although they are usually very gifted tacticians). And certainly not because they are selflessly loyal (or many other of the litany of Boy Scout virtues). But because, within the crises of the Game, they will require shelter, praise and rescue. Provide those things.

Finally, the Soloists:

And I'm afraid that we're going to have to discuss them (including Vytas) in the following post. The minutes are ticking ...

But I hope that we've covered enough to make this point:

The original Ta Keo - the players - faced an uphill battle from the day Jeff Probst handed them their buffs. So, my hat is off to those of their number who were, on the eve of Episode Nine, still in the Game ~

Abi-Maria, Kelly, Kelley and Spencer

Cambodia As It Became

Well! Well!

As I said earlier ... when I see overly-convenient tribal configurations purportedly produced by random draws, I'm sometimes truly amazed by Fate's skill at the craft.. And to see how nicely Fate managed to distribute the Superior, Subordinate and Soloist personalities between Cambodia's three interim Tribes (while maintaining a Bayon majority in two of the three) didn't disappoint:

Amazing!

So, let's begin with Ta Keo:

Immediately upon arrival, Kelley did what Gemini do. She identified the majority (which wasn't all that difficult ... ) and began her burrow into its protective center by kicking her former tribemate - Terry - under the bus. As it turned out, a most unnecessary bit of unattractive behavior.

Ciera, too, settled into the Tribe's loosely-knit hierarchal scheme that seemed, ultimately, to designate Terry as its honorary Chairman of the Board. And, given how very little we were shown of the its personal relationships, it is really very hard to know who was actually Ta Keo's most influential member. Because, although Leo (Keith) and Scorpio (Kass) are both innately drawn to overt leadership, Kass was , at this point, still playing the role of the matron (a part usually filled by a Cancer native) and Keith was (as I said earlier) still (and always) delivering ... a pretty mean impression of the laconic - and iconic - and irrepressible - Sandra - who, in Heroes vs Villains, appeared to show up at strategy conferences only long enough to make sure that it was anyone but her who was about to become the evening's Main Attraction: Leo are, blessedly, unimpressed by detail. In fact, if Sandra had only spit a bit - and Keith would only cuss a bit more - an audio-only audience might never know the difference.

So, if I had to guess the identity of the power behind Terry's throne, I would have to think that it was his fellow Libra - Joe. And I really wish that the Season had begun - and continued until the Merge - in this Tribal configuration and that Terry had been able to remain in Cambodia. Because I would have loved to see what sort of dynamic would have developed between the two when and if the stresses of Tribal Councils arrived at Ta Keo. Note: Aras is also a Libra ...

And, about Libra:

Earlier, in another thread, I said that ... I worked very closely for a number of years with a Libra. And I have never met a more fascinating personality. Not least because Libra are not natural, overt, heirarchal leaders. They are, instead, naturally independent arbiters, diplomats, middlemen/manipulaters ... schmoozers..

And, here, I'll add that Michel used perhaps the most accurate term to describe the personality when he spoke of Abi-Maria (in his most recent post) as a kingmaker.

Libra adore information and collect it voraciously - disseminating the juicy bits and pieces of their hoard quite cunningly - while others work twice as hard to acquire and accumulate far less effective implements of power. And I've always thought that their secondary symbol (after their imposing Scales) should be the Octopus. Because their intuitve goal is to spread their tentacles of influence as far abroad as possible.

These are the natives for whom the declarative, I want to be the one that everyone else ... comes to, was invented!

However, Libra is an Air Sign. And the chaotic Survivor environments (physical, emotional and social) are - save, arguably, for Aquarius - very difficult for Air natives. In other words, there is good reason why Joe sets about making his immediate physical surroundings as pleasant and comfortable - as quickly - as he can. And why Abi-Maria detests being excluded from conversations and imagines the worst when she is. And why Terry is once again the go-to-guy in his Tribe – the Libra personality attracts the revelations, confidences, gossip and trust of others like a magnet – but, this time, the go-to-guy with a social game.

Note: In more tranqul environments than those of Survivor, Libra are, as their Profile indicates, the Zodiac's most social beings.

So, its been really fun for me to watch the interactions of this Season's Libra. I thought that the interplay between Abi-Maria and Terry - the one tribemate who seemed to truly understand what she was feeling - was touching. And I suppose that I am the only member of the Board who hoped that Abi-Maria lasted far into the Game.

At Bayon:

The Game's second Ta Keo Gemini sought shelter amongst the Bayon in much the same manner as did Kelley at Ta Keo. By throwing his former tribemate - Kelly - under that same proverbial bus. However, in this case, the Cancer managed a fairly effective counteroffensive.

And, here, I'll be brief:

By the time that an abberant Tribal Council arrived at Bayon the issue had become a territorial dispute between two Superior Water natives: Kimmi (the Scorpio) and Monica (the Game's second Cancer). The Scorpio, of course, won. And the first original Bayon left the Game. Sometimes, the most obvious explanation of an event is also the most accurate and honest one.

And, finally, the ill-fated Angkor:

The only Tribe of the three with a Ta Keo majority. Where, as Woo said, all they had to do was not do anything crazy. Which is, of course, precisely what his former Fire and Air tribemates rushed headlong to do.

First, some side notes:

Savage has said in exit interviews that the Jeff Varner of Ta Keo never arrived in Angkor. That the Aries only left the shelter to go to the bathroom. In his defense, Jeff Varner has said that he was ill from the moment he arrived at Angkor and physically unable to attend the scramblings. For her part, the Tribe's other Aries - Peih-Gee - has said that she simply was no longer the same person who played the Game in China. And that the style of play that confronted her in Cambodia confounded and angered her.

That said:

The harsh conditions of Angkor were, in my opinion, inexcusable. However, they were the same for all of its inhabitants. So, to say that the 4-to-2 minority of Tasha (Superior - Capricorn) and Savage (Superior - Leo) played the Game remarkably well while there is an understatement. And, while there is a lot more to be said about Abi-Maria's dominant place in this Season later in this thread, I'll reinterate here that Tasha's management of the Libra's - the kingmaker's - skills and excesses was more than just impressive. But, management is, of course, what Capricorn do.

And, of, course, Angkor was where we first really got to know the classic Leo personality of Andrew Savage.

But, about Aries:

In the post containing my initial comments about Cambodia's Survivors, I wrote at length about the Sign's natives. And I hope that you'll take a peek back at those remarks as well as a fresh look at the Aries Profile. Abi-Maria hasn't yet vanquished - Jeremy.

At Bayon:

Jeremy continued to refine his one-and-one partnerships (before the term Voting Bloc reared its ridiculous head). In fact, with the possible exception of the lone original Ta Keo - Kelley - I think it would be fair to say that Jeremy had established a network of those relationships that spanned the Tribe's entire roster. And that is quite a feat for an Aries (for whom patience and restraint are not advertised virtues). And Kelley again landed airily in the middle of a Tribe - at peace. The single Immunity Challenge was won and - unlike her counterpart - Spencer - no Tribal Council loomed on her horizon.

There was, still, the perpetually nervous and forever itchy-to-do-something Stephen in camp. But other than that, Bayon was, once again, carrying-on in a rather pleasant place to be.

Meanwhile, at Ta Keo:

Also, once again, original Ta Keo (as they had at Angkor) outnumbered the newly-constituted Tribe's former Bayon. Once again, the Immunity Challenge was lost. And once again, one of their own left the Game.

And that happened, in short, because the last iteration of Ta Keo was a perfect storm of personalities having a really bad day: 1) emotional/manipulative/secretive Water natives 2) insecure/indecisive/vain Air natives and 3) a lone self-centric/patronizing/brusque Fire native.

So, Andrew was overbearing. Ciera was offended by Andrew's insensitivity. Kass saw the perfect opportunity to make intrigue the mood of the moment. Spencer was, as usual, looking for any port in the storm. Abi-Maria seized another opportunity to be the center of fawning attention. Kelly spoke (if she spoke) too softly to be heard. And the constantly-cocooned Woo was sent backing.

And, as of the eve of the Family Visit, so had Andrew. And Ciera. And Kass. And Kelly. Been sent packing.

You'll notice that the Chart's divisions have now been alterated to reflect the natural divisions of the Merged Tribe:

The (Minority) Earth and Water natives remaining in the Game at the Merge are on the left and its remaining (Majority) Fire and Air natives are on the right. So now is a good time to be reminded of the following:

There are thirty completed Games in the Survivor Series.

For instance (put bluntly):

The players on the left side of this Chart did not, from the moment that the composition of Cambodia's cast was decided, have a realistic chance of winning the Game.

The Tribal phase of the Game never got any better for the original Ta Keo - as a group. But that fact - even with due credit given to Terry's unrelated-to-the-Game departure and the incredibly coincidental placement of four of their number in Angkor's patently unfair physical environment - cannot be fairly laid at the feet of any group or circumstance other than those of the Ta Keo themselves:

18. "Cambodia's Finale"
LAST EDITED ON 12-16-15 AT 08:50 PM (EST)

Good Evening!

Perhaps between the New Year and the New Season I'll manage to fill the huge gaps I've left in Signs of Survival: Cambodia.

And perhaps not ...

But I did want to post, at the very least, a graphic representation of the State of the Signs before tonight's Finale begins. So, just below is an updated Tribal Chart and comment followed by the Chart that depicts the current status of the natural contest between the complimentary/competitive Elements ...

THE FINAL SIX
As I believe they will finish the Season

Kimmi | Water | Scorpio | Fixed | Bayon:

Survivor is not kind to Scorpio women. And, as a member of this Season's Sun Sign Minority, Kimmi had virtually no chance of becoming its Sole Survivor. So it is impressive to see her in the Final Six.

Note: Outside the Game, Scorpio women manage very well indeed. In fact, if Hillary Clinton should become President of the United States, a Scorpio will be the first female to occupy the office..

At the beginning of the Season (and for some time afterwards) I thought that Kimmi would be (and was) Jeremy's closest ally and confidant. I'm no longer sure that that was ever true. And, we've seen so little of Kimmi's relationships within the Game that I'm not certain that we'll ever know to what extent she influenced its intrigues and strategies. It does, though, now seem that she has become an expendable 4th in a Final Three and, I suspect, a bit of a thorn in the side of another formidable personality - Tasha.

Note: If Jeremy can manage to orchestate Kimmi's departure at the hands of Tasha, Spencer (et al), I think that he'll receive her vote.

Kieth | Fire |Leo | Fixed | Bayon:

My very favorite Laconic Leo!

Leo is the Zodiac's paternal Sign. And a natural-born leader. But Keith has chosen to play both of his Seasons as a very reputable imitation of his female counterpart - Sandra Diaz-Twine. However, unfortunately for Keith, not as shrewdly.

But, I do so wish that he could win. Keith, with a brand new million, would be so much fun to see.

Note: Fixed Sign natives are not only a bit stubborn, they are also usually very conservative personalities. So, I think that Keith will definitely be a Jeremy supporter. No matter how he leaves the Game.

Kelley | Air |Gemini | Mutable | Ta Keo:

It has been a treat to watch Cambodia's analytical Air Signs play the Game. So many times you could very literally watch the wheels turn behind those scrunched foreheads. And, of course, Kelley has been the most remarkable of them all.

So, although there are facets of her personality that I find very unattractive, I do think that, should she manage to become one of the Final Three, she has a very good case (of individual accomplishment) to bring before the Jury.

Note: I think that Kelley, too, is a vote for Jeremy. I don't believe that, ultimately, she is going to forgive Spencer's betrayal of a Final Three pact. She waited too long for the alliance that she had coveted the entire Game to be a gracious scapegoat. Even if grace were one of her virtues ... .

Tasha | Earth |Capricorn | Cardinal | Bayon

Tasha, like Kimmi, was a member of Cambodia's Minority. And, like Kimmi, had virtually no chance to win the Game. However, as I've pointed out previously, it should be noted that the one Earth | Water native to win the Game in a Fire | Air Majority Season was Tina - A Capricorn. So, I suppose there is hope.

And I think that Tasha has, very probably, played the most impressive game of the Season. Capricorn manage. And, from a distinctly disadvantaged position throughout much of the Game, has she managed!

So, I think that if Tasha can also manage to control her natural impulse to condescension when she speaks to the Jury, she may be able to make them see just how truly remarkably she played. At least, I hope so. Because, although like Kelley, Tasha has personality traits that I find grating, I think that she deserves more than just Savage's vote.

Spencer | Air |Gemini | Mutable | Ta Keo

I don't think that the successful completion of a personal journey should ever be a standard by which a Sole Survivor is judged. Whether the journey is to "I love you" or "It's a boy". And I am so weary of Spencer's trek to common humanity that I could scream ...

As to his game:

That Spencer is a very bright lad is indisputable. But I would argue that he isn't a particularly bright Survivor. Because, he has done nothing more - or different - in Cambodia than he did in Cagayan. In both Seasons, he played the Game to stay in it. Making and breaking alliances/voting blocs/pacts at will and - as his crowning achievement - orchestrating a boot in order to become another player's most trusted - follower.

So, I sincerely hope that at the end of his saga, Spencer is rewarded as he should be - with second place.

Jeremy | Fire |Aries | Cardinal | Bayon

I think of Jeremy as an independent personality who has established an impressive array of one-on-one fraternal partnerships with bros who each – individually and including Spencer - believe Jeremy to be valuable to his or her own game. And the non-strategy (if you will) works so well this Season because, with few exceptions, its players each came to Cambodia with a rather rigid strategic agenda. Agendas that tended to foster myopias that obscured a broader view of the Game happening around them.

So Jeremy has been able to help his partners (one by one) implement their agendas while never personally playing one off against the other. And the end result (to date) is that Jeremy's competitors have been reduced from nineteen to five who, almost to a man/woman, still want someone out of the Game ... other than him.

In a way, I think of Jeremy’s game as a version of Keith’s ( a la Sandra’s) as long as it isn’t me strategy - with a very major difference: Keith’s version has kept him on the periphery of the Season’s strategic accomplishments – Jeremy’s has made him an actor in virtually every one of them.

And that frees Jeremy from the customary dilemma of who to take to the Final 3. Because, if he continues through the Finale to be the more palatable partner in the crimes/coups of the others, it really isn’t going to matter who is sitting there with him. His will be the dominant narrative.

2. "The Astrology"
LAST EDITED ON 10-07-15 AT 06:51 AM (EST)

THE VERY BASICS

Astrology groups personalities, first, by the common innate traits and behaviors of the natives of each of the twelve Astronomy-inspired
Sun Signs
Keyword – Ego

Astrology then assigns each of the twelve to one of four groups of three Sun Signs defined by the characteristics of the Philosophy-inspired

Elements
Keyword – Temperament

The Element Earth - These three practical and industrious Signs are Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo.
The Element Water - These three emotional and intuitive Signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
The Element Fire – These three charismatic and spontaneous Signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.
The Element Air – These three intellectual and balanced Signs are Libra, Gemini and Aquarius

Note:

The personalities of the three Sun Signs within
an Element are said to be compatible with each other.
And the Elements of Earth and Water (E&W) and of Fire and Air (F&A)
are considered to be complementary of one another
and in opposition to the other pair.

Charting the performances of Survivor’s Sun Signs by the naturally – opposed duos of E&W and F&A reveals
the fact that in 88% (21 of 24) of the completed Seasons that have been cast with Majority/Minority populations
a member of the dominant (numerically- superior) psychological culture won the Game.

The three exceptions to the Majority Wins Rule have been
Tina | Capricorn (The Outback), Yul | Aquarius (Cook Islands) and Jud | Gemini (Nicaragua).

On the right of that Chart (just below) are the Seasons that featured Earth and Water Majorities.
Yul’s and Jud’s extraordinary wins are highlighted.

On the left bottom of the Chart are the six Balanced Seasons.

At top left are those Seasons played with Fire and Air Majorities. And Tina’s odds-defying win is highlighted there.

Note:

As you can see, no original Minority has ever managed to reach Final 10 with a numerical advantage.
And in only five Seasons (of 24) has a Minority reached that plateau at a parity with the original Majority.

3. "Earth"
LAST EDITED ON 10-07-15 AT 11:18 AM (EST)

KEYWORDS

Practical and Useful
Structured and Productive
Grounded and Sensual
Tactile and Dependable

The ‘Practical’ Earth Signs are grounded and dependable. All of the earthy metaphors are appropriate here: ‘Salt of the earth’, ‘Feet firmly planted on the ground’, ‘Solid as a rock’, etc. Often referred to as the ‘builders’ of the Zodiac, creativity is a tangible proposition to these natives and they feel best once they have accumulated a goodly number of worldly possessions. Blending in with their natural habitat – grounded – Earth Signs engage life through the five senses and as a result operate at a slower, more thorough, pace than do the natives of other Elements. Often intimately attuned to the dance of nature – most treasure their time spent outdoors – they are masters at assessing, assembling and organizing … things.

The Element of Earth also confers a sense of duty, responsibility and reliability to those in its sphere. Their gift to others is bringing form to ideas: often making them an excellent balancing partner for an idle dreamer with potential. They tend their own garden and inspire others to make the most of theirs. These are the people you can count on to ‘be there’ when you need them. Tending toward caution and conservatism in desire and approach, their logical minds and measured responses display an innate recuperative capacity: much preferring a sure thing, these folks do not take big risks. That said, however, certainly in that they appreciate a good meal, congenial company and fine wine better than anyone else, they are also sensualists.

On the flip side:

Earth Signs can become so caught up in their objectives that they overlook the feelings and opinions of others. And their single-minded focus on the tasks at hand make them vulnerable to the "all work and no play" eddy of life. It is a big picture, after all, but these natives may be more concerned with the finish line than with the journey they are taking. So, while Earth’s orientation toward the real and their need for tangible results in return for their labors can make them very productive, too much of those good things can be stifling to inspiration, faith and a sense of greater purpose. And the ever-present risk inherent in their acquisitive nature is that they may become greedy and far too materialistic.

THE CAPRICORN PROFILE

Positive Traits
Practical and Prudent
Ambitious and Disciplined
Self-Reliant and Persevering
Resourceful and Creative

Negative Traits
Pessimistic and Melancholy
Materialistic and Stern
Conventional and Rigid
Demanding and Cold

Capricorn is one of the most stable and serious of the Zodiac types and these rocklike characters have many sterling qualities. They are normally confident, strong-willed and calm. Born with a sense of purpose and an intense drive for achievement and excellence that never lets up, they are the major finishers of most projects begun by the 'pioneering' Signs. Capricorn exude a sense of being in charge. And they usually are. But, even in their pursuit of status and power, they rarely compromise their integrity to get there. These are the masters of the physical realm and are widely admired for what they’re able to accomplish.

However, while Capricorn have a great respect for authority, they may not be willing to listen to the opinions and suggestions of others. And as the ranking authority figure in a given situation they expect their underlings to be as self- disciplined as they themselves are and to perform every task undertaken to the highest standard. They are often humorless. And a fortress of defenses can keep the curious and insincere at bay in their lives. So that while to the world at large Capricorn often covey an image that is both intriguing and intimidating, those that pass the test of loyalty are allowed to see a more vulnerable side: at heart, these natives are interested in enduring ties and because they have a tendency to pessimism and melancholy that many of them are unable to keep to themselves – especially if they fail personally – Capricorn often look to family and longtime friends for emotional support.

And mood swings are not the only reason Capricorn deserve the adjective based on their name - capricious. They can be surprisingly and suddenly witty and subtle for the quiet, reserved individuals that they seem to be. But they also have a tendency to ruin things by unexpected and utterly irresponsible bouts of flippancy: their penchant for melancholy creates a unique filter for Capricorn humor that is known to veer toward the darkly absurd. Reference: Natalie of Micronesia and Corinne of Gabon

Additionally, Capricorn are very status-minded. Even if their immediate finances don't permit an extravagant lifestyle, the January-born can unconsciously adopt the mores, attitudes and mannerisms of the elite. The trappings of success are important to these natives not only for personal pleasure but also for the impression that they can make on others.

Romantically: Capricorn usually thrive as one half of a power couple. Their ideal partners are individuals who they can respect but who also allow them to take charge most of the time. Once happily settled, they’ll go about the business of building both an empire and a cozy home life.

THE TAURUS PROFILE

Positive Traits
Patient and Loyal
Warmhearted and Loving
Persistent and Determined
Rooted and Sensuous

Negative Traits
Jealous and Possessive
Resentful and Inflexible
Self-indulgent and Greedy
Slow and Brooding

This Sign’s characteristics are solidity, practicality, extreme determination and strength of will - no one will ever drive Taurus, but they will willingly and loyally follow a leader they trust. They are stable, balanced, conservative and law-abiding citizens and lovers of peace (possessing all the best qualities of the bourgeoisie). They will do everything in their power to maintain the security of the status quo.

So, on rare occasions a Taurus may be an obstinately and exasperatingly self-righteous, unoriginal, rigid, ultraconservative, argumentative and querulous boor: stuck in a self-centered rut. And, whether their characters are positive or negative, they need someone to stroke their egos with a frequent, "Well Done!" Luckily, Taurus has a knack for attracting praise. It is amazing how people will bend over backwards to please them.

They are faithful and generous friends with a great capacity for affection. But Taurus rarely establish intimacies outside their social rank (to which they are ordinarily excessively loyal). And in the main, they are gentle, even-tempered, good-natured, modest and slow to anger. If they are provoked, however, they can explode into violent, uncontrolled outbursts. Lurking within every serene Taurus is the potential for a seething rage that re-establishes a sense of order by force. Equally unexpected are their occasional sallies into humor and exhibitions of fun.

Those with the Sun in Taurus can be the most down-to-Earth of the Signs, so naturally they revel in earthly pleasures. Taurus has a strong aesthetic taste. And allied to his appreciation of all things beautiful is a love for the good things of life: pleasure, comfort, luxury and good food and wine. Their sensuality is legendary, whether they’re cooking up a sumptuous feast or turning on their tantalizingly slow charm.

More firmly rooted in the physical world than the other Signs, Sun in Taurus can be as immovable as a mountain: it’s hard to get a Taurus to rush into anything and that can be frustrating to everyone else. But once they make a decision, it’s usually a sound one. And that same stubborn deliberateness keeps Taurus fixed on a goal long after others have given up. Moreover, these natives don’t like to be pushed around by what they consider flights of fancy. Changes in their surroundings or routines disturb their equilibrium. And if the change is too abrupt or fundamental to his comfort, the shock may be too much for the Bull. He may actually become physically ill.

Taurus are known as the “builders” of the Zodiac and in their work they are industrious and ambitious: unafraid of getting their hands dirty and at their best in routine positions of trust and responsibility where there is little need of urgency, little risk of change and a pension at the end. Yet they are creative and are also often founders of enterprises where the fruits are of their own labors.

Romantically Speaking: Taurus are motivated by a desire for material and emotional security and when they’ve found a suitable partner they’ll stay put where they are and carefully cultivate a stable, deeply rooted life. Respect them and allow them to take their sweet time doing things, and all will be well. On the down side, their reluctance to discard the familiar can sometimes cause Taurus to linger in a relationship that they’ve outgrown.

THE VIRGO PROFILE

Positive Traits
Caring and Loyal
Meticulous and Discriminating
Practical and Organized
Clever and Analytical

Negative Traits
Fussy and a Worrier
Overcritical and Harsh
Perfectionist and Conservative
Negative and Unsocial

Those with Sun in Virgo are constantly on the move, always trying to fine-tune their lives and relationships. They are filled with nervous energy and a desire to make improvements, so they're serene only when they are fulfilling their meticulously planned steps toward a carefully chosen goal.

Virgo is the only Sun Sign represented by a female and it is sometimes thought of as a delicate young girl and sometimes as an intelligent, but rather pedantic and spinsterish, older woman. The latter impression is sometimes confirmed by the Virgo’s precision, refinement, fastidiousness, conventionality and aristocratic attitude of reserve. They are usually observant, shrewd, critically inclined, judicious, patient and practical.

Both sexes have considerable charm and dignity and in their unassuming, cheerful and agreeable fashion, they can be sensible, discreet, well-spoken, wise and witty. But while in many respects Virgo are the epitome of social grace and propriety, their sterling etiquette is more apt to be scripted than spontaneous: the result of careful thought and hours of mental practice.

Intellectually, Virgo is enquiring, methodical and logical, studious and teachable. They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. Thoroughness, hard work and conscientiousness are their hallmarks. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues. And, because of their ability to see every angle of a multi-faceted problem, they are as unhappy with abstract theories as they are with intractable philosophies: placing no confidence in either.

Moreover, for as much as his intellect aids analysis, it also abets the Virgo’s compulsion to criticize. Nothing escapes these perfectionists’ eyes. And in their scrutiny of incongruities, these natives leave no stone … nor anyone … unexamined: as critical, and unforgiving, of themselves as they are of others. So that they may bring the art of self-concealment to a high pitch (hiding their apprehensions about themselves and their often considerable sympathy with other people under the mantle of an undemonstrative clinician) with the result that they shrink from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and are careful to keep those they do make superficial.

Virgos often feel compelled to serve others and can find respect in fields where attention to detail and a responsible attitude are rewarded. They are natural healers and are gifted at bringing an unhealthy situation back into balance. But they have to watch out for those who would take advantage of their natures and put them in subservient roles. Finding the courage to place the highest value on what they offer can take a lifetime for some Virgos.

So, given their qualities, Virgo are much more effective in subordinate rather than leadership positions. Responsibility irks them and they often lack the breadth of strategic vision that leadership requires. They are essentially tacticians and excel at the attainment of limited objectives: needing the stimuli of immediacy and prestige attendant to specialization.

Romantically Speaking: The self-contained nature of the Virgo (Virgin) Sun sometimes makes them all the more alluring: someone who will always be whole and complete unto themselves. And this can make them seem unattainable.

Once in a relationship, the Sun in Virgo finds comfort in the routines of daily life. A Virgo who has established a wholesome daily routine is far easier to live with than one that hasn't. And known as loners – there is a physical sensitivity associated with Virgo that could be called high maintenance – they will need plenty of “me” time to maintain their sense of self.

But, when they’ve found a worthy mate, they revel in the patterns and habits of togetherness and can begin to relax into the beauty of the familiar.

4. "Water"
LAST EDITED ON 10-07-15 AT 11:19 AM (EST)

KEYWORDS

Intuitive and Emotional
Imaginative and Nurturing
Secretive and Dreamy
Introverted

The ‘Emotional’ Water Signs are intuitive, sensitive and empathetic. How things feel is what matters to these nurturers and they base their actions on sense, rather than on logic or intellect. Attuned to waves of emotion, these natives have a built-in sonar for reading a mood that affords them a special sensitivity in relationships. Because the receptive talents of these individuals are so remarkably high, they seem to know when to show warmth and when to hold back. Compassionate and understanding, Water Sign natives are extraordinarily adept at assimilating the feelings of others, processing them and offering plans or solutions that will usually be considerate of all. So, at their best, they are a healing force that brings people together.

But, because Water natives are often assessing a situation by its undercurrents, they can seem aloof or even shy at first. And going forward in a relationship or situation often means being sure of their emotional ground: a kind of decision-making process that is baffling to more spontaneous or practical types. That's why those with this Sign are so quickly shaped by their relationships to others and often have to work harder than do the natives of other Elements to maintain their personal boundaries. They need time alone to remember where they end and others begin and to let what's been stirred up by the push and pull of life find its way to a quiet calm again. These are people who need people but who also need the restorative balm of solitude.

Water natives often translate their sense of the world artistically. Some find release from their own personal dramas when they're able to express them as universal. As writers, musicians and actors they help others make sense of the human experience. But this also happens in everyday life: Water Signs soften the blunt edges of the mundane by cushioning it with emotional meaning. They covet aesthetic beauty -- and for everyone to be happy as a result of it. However, much like still water can become stagnant, inactive Water Signs are not at their best. They feel most fulfilled when they are helping others, and they usually do so in enchanting ways.

Seeing things more clearly than others, and feeling them more acutely than do the natives of other Signs, they are frequently referred to as ‘psychic’. But these insights are easily clouded by the intensity of their feelings or altered by their vivid imaginations.

Also on the flip side of this fluid Element is the tendency of these individuals to brood. Susceptible to mood swings, at their worst they can become self-indulgent, controlling – able to manipulate and drain the emotions of those closest to them – and hostage to a fantasy world.

THE CANCER PROFILE

Positive Traits
Nurturing and Sensuous
Intuitive and Imaginative
Shrewd and Tenacious
Sensitive and Empathetic

Negative Traits
Changeable and Moody
Self-Absorbed and Clinging
Subjective and Clannish
Neurotic and Needy

Moreover, the Cancer imagination is so vivid that it’s like they’re watching home movies inside their heads. For them, every life experience can be replayed again and again and the same internal landscape revisited. This is the raw material for both creative genius and the tendency to get stuck in emotional eddies. These natives love to dream of far-away places and times past and will talk about historical events as if they were actually there. Most Cancer have a special reverence for the past, and if you ask them to tell you whom of all people they admire most, they'll most often rattle off the names of several prominent historical figures.

The idiom “home is where the heart is” has no greater ring of truth than when describing how the Cancer feels about his abode. Home is where he dreams, lives, plays and loves. And it is the only place he feels secure. But, because they're psychic sponges, they need plenty of space to unravel the little dramas of the day, or they’ll get cranky.

And Cancer has a tender heart. But you might not see it at first behind the cool exterior. However, once you’re allowed inside the circle of trust, you’ll start to know why they’re called the “Mother” of the Zodiac. Cancer is never truly happy unless they have someone or something to care for and their innate understanding of human emotion allows them to see through the pretenses of other Signs and lend encouragement, support or sympathy when needed. Both men and women of this Sign have an instinctive nurturing side that endears them to those they love and it is amazing to discover how many July-born have acquired the appendage – ‘good ol'– to their names. The Crab’s claws hold tight, though, and often they have trouble letting go of relationships and situations.

But there is a private, reclusive side to every Cancer. Try and question him about his absence and he'll probably not know what you're talking about.

However, if Cancer can reconcile the personal conflict of their urge to be outgoing with the reserve that causes them to withdraw into themselves, then at best they can inspire a generation, especially the youthful part of it, by their idealism. They also have a penchant for trade or business and are often successful as a captain of industry. This is because they are excellent organizers with a good sense of value and economy that they may combine with a flair for invention and originality.

Take Note: The stealth approach of Cancer often takes people by surprise, and many have been underestimated. They’ll protect their sensitivity by going after what they want indirectly, which can be seen as passive. But try to take advantage of their gentle nature, and you’ll soon be put in your place. Once crossed, the Cancer holds a grudge to infinity, so it’s hard to win back their trust.

Romantically Speaking: Above all, the Cancer needs a sense of belonging and an intimate home life. Once committed, they’ll prove to be the ultimate family man or woman, and likely never stray too far from the nest.

THE SCORPIO PROFILE

Positive Traits
Determined and Forceful
Intense and Intuitive
Formidable and Passionate
Exciting and Magnetic

Negative Traits
Jealous and Vengeful
Compulsive and Obsessive
Secretive and Cunning
Manipulative and Obstinate

Scorpio are the most profound and powerful characters in the Zodiac. There is a harnessed aggression, an immense forcefulness, magnetic attraction and often strangely hypnotic quality in their tranquil, but watchful, composure that can be intimidating. An outer mask of cool control belies a vast and often turbulent psychic interior. In a word, the Scorpio is intense, and works best in a crucible of pressure and uphill challenges. Without a sense of purpose, the darker emotions can take hold and lead them down the paths of obsession, jealousy and worse.

In conventional social gatherings they are pleasant to be with, thoughtful in conversation, dignified, and reserved, yet affable and courteous. And in their everyday behavior they give the appearance of being withdrawn from the center of activity. Yet those who know them will recognize the ever-probing, ever-evaluating observation that is an integral component of their character. They intuitively take in everything around them and reveal very little in return. And don’t expect instant friendship here, as it takes time to win the trust of the wary Scorpio.

Scorpio are deeply sensitive and easily moved by their emotions. And that sensitivity, together with a propensity for extreme likes and dislikes, make them easily hurt: quick to detect or imagine insult or injury to themselves and easily aroused to ferocious anger. And because they relate to their fellows only as leaders, they can be blunt to those they dislike to the point of cruelty.

The Sun in Scorpio have a powerful drive to succeed and often have extracurricular activities that take it up a notch. They’re great competitors because of their built-in radar for the weaknesses of the opponent. They’ll remain calm until the exact moment when a targeted attack will do the most damage. That’s why in relationships of any kind they are a formidable enemy if betrayed.

Fortunate that their strong reasoning powers are tempered with imagination and intuition and that these gifts are usually accompanied by critical perception and analytical capacity, Scorpio often find fulfillment in the ice-cold self-control and detachment of the surgeon or soldier and the concentration of the research scientist. And any profession in which investigation and analysis are relevant may attract these charismatic "twice-born" characters. They may also become masters of the written and spoken word. This Sun Sign includes among its natives more geniuses than does any other.

At the other extreme is the procrastinator: the man or woman who is capable of so much that they do nothing and become indolent and self-indulgent: requiring extravagant praise and flattery from those whom they make their cronies.

Romantically Speaking: Those in a relationship with a Scorpio need to be strong-willed in order to keep from being controlled by their undertow. And never try to hide anything from them because they’ll quickly “read” it on your face. Moreover, Scorpio have earned a reputation for being highly sexual and need an amorous outlet for all that emotional intensity. However, to those few allowed into their private worlds they are fiercely loyal and their enveloping sensuality usually makes all the drama worth it.

THE PISCES PROFILE

Positive Traits
Romantic and Sensitive
Compassionate and Idealistic
Imaginative and Naïve
Intuitive and Creative

Negative Traits
Escapist and Self-Indulgent
Secretive and Vague
Weak-willed and Gullible
Impressionable and Overwhelmed

Pisceans are deservedly popular with all kinds of people in part because their easygoing, affectionate, malleable and submissive natures offer no threat or challenge to stronger and more exuberant characters. But they will not be able to maintain for very long friendships or associations with those who are too materialistic.

As the last of the twelve Zodiac Signs, Pisces is said to contain aspects of them all. This makes the Pisces Sun so changeable as to appear not to have one singular identity. It's as if they merely touch down in this human reality and remain only long enough to try on a few personas. Consequently, those with the Sun in Pisces can seem to be "somewhere else" half the time. And because their natures are often too otherworldly for practical purposes – they tend to exist emotionally rather than rationally and instinctively rather than intellectually – the nine-to-five life is not easy for them.

So it is important for these individuals to find a sense of purpose in order to avoid just drifting: their sensitivity makes them more vulnerable to escapism through addictions or personal dramas than are other Signs. The challenge to Pisces natives, then, is to somehow integrate their affinity with the more subtle planes into constructive working relationships. Fortunately, Pisceans are usually versatile and intuitive; quickly master new skills; observe and listen well; and are receptive to new ideas and atmospheres. And all these factors can combine to produce remarkable creativity in literature, music and art. This is the sign of the mystic poet, and a creative pursuit gives Pisces the motivation to be disciplined. And bringing structure to the vast imagination and shades of emotion flowing within the Pisces nature is a great achievement.

Similarly, in medicine and social work, Pisceans find an outlet for their empathy and mercy while their professional statures curb the likelihood of their being taken advantage of. And, if they're typical March-born, they are not elitists: saint, sinner, murderer, thief, liar, rich or poor - deserving or undeserving - the Piscean instinctively recognizes the worth of the individual and can overlook the apparent causes of their circumstances.

But the fact that the Pisces Sun leads with a compassionate heart can be both a blessing and a curse. Many are remarkably wise and self-sacrificing when it comes to helping the vulnerable or those down on their luck. But this noble trait can take them down a path of being used and abused before they learn to set strong boundaries and they are better working either by themselves or in subordinate positions. Most would be afraid to manage more than a small department, worrying always that they would fail in a crisis.

Romantically speaking: Pisces fare well with a guiding-hand type who understands the fluidity of their nature. And life with a Pisces means having a bridge to unseen worlds of the heart and imagination. Awesome!

5. "Fire"
LAST EDITED ON 10-07-15 AT 02:38 PM (EST)

KEYWORDS
Spontaneous and Energetic
Gregarious and Passionate
Self-centered and Dramatic
Instinctual and Visionary

The ‘Physical’ Fire Signs have a simmering at-the-ready stance and are prone to sudden illuminating flashes of insight and bursts of enthusiasm. There is about them a warm radiance, a trust in life's journey and a willingness to take risks. Infused with an emotional energy that can spread like wildfire to everyone around them, they sense a golden thread of destiny and potential running through their own lives and are often able to lead others to their own. But, it is important for them to have cheerleaders to fan the flames of their interests.

A Fire Sign is also an indicator of creativity. This Element manifests itself in unique ways, and those in its glow are usually wonderfully courageous, lively spirits: self-sufficient, spontaneous and possessing a tremendous zest for life. Strong, self-assured and fun, they're great catalysts for play and have a knack for unearthing the spontaneous side of those around them.

Fire Signs act on instinct or "sixth sense," and that can make them look reckless to more cautious types. However, they're actually following a powerful intuition that keeps them at the leading edge of fresh experiences. But, although going on faith often gets them far, they have a tendency to skip crucial steps and to be unaware of the emotional impact of their actions on others. And because they are so very passionate about life and like to live large, Fire Signs often feel frustrated by mundane chores and duties. Too, Fire natives can be overly strident in getting their way. Call it bossy, even. These folks can come across rather forcefully. Selfishness and an overdeveloped ego can also be seen as part of a fiery individual's shadowy side.

THE ARIES PROFILE

Positive Traits
Adventurous and Confident
Pioneering and Courageous
Enthusiastic and Straight-Forward
Dynamic and Quick-witted

Negative Traits
Selfish and Dominating
Impulsive and Insensitive
Foolhardy and Quick-Tempered
Willful and Ruthless

But the Mars-ruled are initiators -- not perpetuators.

Often larger-than-life, they can light up a room with their charisma: they’re among the ones with the stamina to party ‘til dawn. But if a gathering, project or relationship begins to be dull they’ll quickly move on. The Sun in Aries craves excitement and their restless spirits are in constant pursuit of the next ‘big thing’.

Because their approach to life is somewhat simplistic, what Aries can accomplish without a lot of distracting nuances and complexities to slow him down is staggering. Don't, however, put them in a position where they'll have to deal with complicated emotions or with a problem requiring delicate handling or subtlety. They're simply not equipped for it.

And, much concerned with personal advancement and physical satisfaction (self-reliant but also self-centered), Aries do not work well under authority unless they, too, have subordinates. In fact, they may be too self-sufficient and proud to acknowledge they have a boss and often take matters into their own hands (disregarding authority absolutely). Ask an Aries how many times he's been fired, and he'll probably tell you more than once. And that is probably because, most of all, Aries – propelled by an inner drive that is a force to be reckoned with – wants to achieve great things and at times their rush to accomplish them can cause them to take unnecessary risks or to forge ahead without planning out crucial details. Some say the Sun in Aries learns the hard way: by leaping before looking. But, being an active Sign, the Aries does learn best through experience.

In personal relationships Aries are frank, direct and candid: gregarious and generous friends. However, their immense energy can also make them aggressive and restless, argumentative, headstrong, quick-tempered and easily offended: of all the Zodiac’s natives, an Aries will most readily haul off and punch a nose.

And while an Aries is not the least bit calculating (in most instances, he'll simply tell it like it is before he's had a chance to think about the consequences), he does crave admiration and praise. So that while he won’t usually lie (in contradiction of his straightforward nature), he'll often exaggerate the truth in his own favor or simply in order to stamp it with his individuality.

Intellectually, Aries are quick-witted, usually objective, and inspirationally optimistic: irreplaceable champions of lost causes and last-ditch stands. But they can also become extremists: foolhardy and dogmatic zealots whose enormous talents and vibrant personalities become a hindrance (if not a threat) to the welfare of the society in which they move.

Romantically Speaking: Aries is the Sign of the Warrior and sometimes they go too far and wound those they love with hurtful words spoken in the heat of an argument. They quickly forgive and forget, but they often have to deal with the fallout of their brusque demeanor. Moreover, these natives have minds that filter out the non-essentials and it is their clear sight that helps them make such rapid progress in life: so, once fixed on a goal, they’ll move forward with a single-minded determination that threatens to leave those close to them in the dust. But if you’re a match for such an amped-up spirit, you’ll never forget being pulled along by the power of this dynamic personality.

THE LEO PROFILE

Positive Traits
Generous and Affectionate
Exuberant and Colorful
Broadminded and Theatrical
Proud and Vivacious

Negative Traits
Pompous and Patronizing
Overbearing and Provocative
Dogmatic and Intolerant
Selfish and Egotistical

At first, it’s hard not to like those with the Sun in Leo with their open hearted, friendly ways. They often enter a room as a radiant presence that causes everyone to take notice, and are skilled at “working” a crowd for best effect. As a friend, they have a gift for mining your buried dream, polishing it to a shine again, and making anything seem possible. And there is a public confidence with the Leo Sun that affords them free reign to fully express their creative and social selves. Whether they end up in civil service or on a Broadway stage, chances are they’ll have an audience. When standing proudly before adoring fans (or co-workers), they project a warmth that has a palpable power to win hearts and minds.

It is a Leo’s birthright to lead, and they'll naturally assume that role without being asked. However, if that authority is questioned, they may abandon a project entirely. Outgoing, spontaneously warm-hearted and plain-spoken (but poor judges of character), Leo are more disillusioned than the average if let down by those they trust.

And, since Leo simply can't function if they're not in a position to lead, they'll brood until that status has been reinstated. However, even after they discover that they've been duped or abandoned, most Leos are too big about it – or too proud – to retaliate. Because they are usually incapable of actions that are in any way mean, base or underhanded, they have difficulty in recognizing those traits in others. In activities where these lower qualities are essential for success, the majority of Leo tend not to succeed.

And because they see a project in its grandest perspective, Leo natives have a disdain for details: their chief attribute in any group situation is the unique capacity for the overall manipulation of resources to produce a desired result. So it is not surprising that more wealth is found under Leo than under any other Sun Sign.

On the whole they are powers for good, for they are strongly idealistic, humane, and beneficent. They have a powerful intelligence and are of a broad philosophical, sometimes religious, turn of mind. Those who are devout may be very obstinate in upholding traditional beliefs and will cling tenaciously, but with complete sincerity, to practices and doctrines that liberal thinkers regard as absurdly out-of-date.

However, a Leo’s faults can be as large in scale as are his virtues and an excessively negative Leo can be a very unpleasant human being. These Leos will not hesitate to use cunning, lies and trickery to discredit their adversaries. Narcissism, greed for flattery, bombast, pomposity and snobbish superiority can also be characteristic of Leo.

Romantically Speaking; The Sun in Leo has a hard time with the mundane, and will be drawn to colorful careers and dramatic relationships. While some people shrink at the idea of dating around, the Leo considers romance a grand game. And it’s not unusual for these natives to play more than one game at a time.

Too, after getting to know a Leo, you’ll discover that they’re very loyal: to themselves. You can come up against severe resistance if you try to bend the will of a Leo for the sake of a relationship. Their reputation for being ‘diva-difficult’ is well-earned. But, because so many of them grab the gusto and achieve their lofty goals, in the end their stubborn self-regard usually elicits widespread respect.

THE SAGITTARIUS PROFILE

Positive Traits
Optimistic and Freedom-loving
Curious and Sporting
Good-humored and Straightforward
Expansive and Philosophical

Negative Traits
Blindly-optimistic and Careless
Irresponsible and Superficial
Flippant and Promiscuous
Tactless and Restless

Sagittarius have a positive outlook on life and are full of enterprise, energy, versatility and adventure: eager to extend experience beyond the physically familiar. They delight in travel and exploration: Sagittarius are genuinely intrigued by foreign cultures and even when their finances preclude traipsing the globe Sagittarius travel in their minds. And their bright, cheerful demeanors can be disarming. It’s an uncomplicated style that invites you to drop your defenses, too, and just “be.” This makes for a fun friend who knows all the best ethnic restaurants and will be more than happy to stay out ‘til the wee hours.

Ambitious and optimistic (even when their hopes are dashed), their strongly idealistic natures are able to withstand disappointments without being affected. They are usually honorable, honest, trustworthy, truthful, generous and sincere (with a passion for justice). They are characteristically on the side of the underdog and are prepared to be rebellious.

Non-conformists, Sagittarius hate being bound to rigid social confines or pigeonholed into strict routines that don't give them plenty of breathing room. Even more than physical restrictions, they'll loathe mental confinement. Sagittarius have both profound and broad minds: equipped with foresight, good judgment and keen intuition. As a result, they are often fascinating conversationalists and correspondents. Think Mark Twain. Think Sagittarius.

Known, too, for their spontaneous philosophical ramblings, these natives don’t seem to get bogged down in emotional complexities. So those who love them may wish for more depth: more feeling. And there are times when they are shockingly blunt. It’s unnerving to be the target of a direct hit.. But that same tactless personality can be a beacon of light in confusing times. Leave it to a Sagittarius to step into a messy tangle and sum up the situation with blinding clarity. They’ll be willing to speak the truth when all others hide in confusion. This makes them invaluable friends who can guide you back to a clear path when you need honesty rather than enabling.

And in a curious twist of fate, Sagittarius, who are often accused of clumsiness, are also credited with extraordinary grace and coordination when engaged in purposeful physical activity: most particularly sports and dance. In everyday activities, however, the Sagittarian can be surprisingly less dignified. Though the December-born athlete may break the record for high jump, he'll stumble over his shoelaces walking onto the field.

Sagittarius are much more adept at adapting than inventing and are at their best when working with colleagues whose talents compliment, rather than compete with, their own. But Sagittarius can sometimes be exacting, domineering and inconsiderate in the work place: scorning the inadequacies of others while expecting fulsome recognition of their own skills and effort. Moreover, they can be (and frequently are) impulsively angry. And, when angry, both male and female Sagittarians can be vicious: employing with precision those words or actions that will most severely wound their adversary. On the other hand, they are magnanimous in forgiving offenses and quick to make amends for their own intemperance.

Romantically Speaking: The same notable physicality that attracts Sagittarius to vigorous athletics and bold travel-adventures often extends to their intimate relationships and their flexible, lusty, anything-goes attitude can cause them to take a walk on the wild side. So, the ideal partner for them is above all a friend and a partner in life’s great adventure who understands the needs of a true free spirit. However, more apt then the average to make an uncongenial alliance, their innate restlessness (which, if excessive, often jeopardizes more than their own stability) will often compel them to use even the most satisfying ménage as a base from which to … depart.

6. "Air"
LAST EDITED ON 10-07-15 AT 02:36 PM (EST)

KEYWORDS
Intellectual and Innovative
Conceptual and Analytical
Curious and Social
Cerebral and Detached

The gift of Air is flexibility and its natives’ ability to experience life through many prisms. Critical thinkers who handle abstract reasoning well, the ‘Intellectual’ Air Signs love to probe and synthesize. Have a dilemma? Hand it over to an Air Sign and watch them go to work.

And the distance between these masters of cultural navigation and their own emotions can be refreshing. These are extremely social creatures – their curiosity keeps them ever- mingling – and their currency is their ability to link diverse social groups or individuals with their often extraordinary collections of ideas, obscure facts, gossip and knowledge. Drawn to words, many Air natives become professional storytellers, interpreters and journalists who provide the rest of us with astute commentary on the cultural trends, social attitudes and political consciousness of our times. Others of them – especially Aquarius – have a more conceptual way of thinking. Almost without exception, however, all of these alert, curious and perceptive individuals are very communicative and the world as seen by an Air Sign will be an interesting one – as their analysis and subsequent explanation (hopefully in terms we can understand) will indicate. Talking with an inspired Air Sign can be like skipping through a kind of virtual reality full of detail, specificity and local color.

Moreover, the Element usually manifests itself in a most humane way: objective, cooperative, unprejudiced (and often highly idealistic), most actually do ‘want to help make a better world’. And, leading with their heads, these observers of the human scene are the ‘idea’ people who, from their loftier viewpoint, are often able to offer it a fresh perspective of its problems and an innate clarity of vision that is rare among the natives of other Signs.

However, these inventive and clever individuals will insist upon considering all sides of an equation before they decide on a course of action. And, because Air Signs are especially vulnerable to the excesses of our mind-body split, balance is of paramount importance to them. So that while Air natives are usually calm and collected, they can – and frequently do – turn bitterly cold if their equilibrium is upset.

A word to the wise: there's little upside to baiting an Air Sign

THE LIBRA PROFILE

Positive Traits
Diplomatic and Urbane
Romantic and Charming
Easy-going and Sociable
Idealistic and Fair-minded

Negative Traits
Indecisive and Changeable
Gullible and Easily-influenced
Flirtatious and Self-indulgent
Passive and Co-dependent

Ruled by the planet Venus, Libra are the very personification of refinement and affection, endearing you with their genteel manner and melting your heart with their ingratiating smiles. Those with the Sun in Libra have an easy grace and charm that is truly enviable. Many have soothing voices that are easy on the ears. And they love to talk. They’re at their very best when their gift for communication is put to a high-minded purpose, and, noted for their ability to harmonize conflicted situations – the Libra personality attracts the revelations, confidences, gossip and trust of others like a magnet – they thrive in calm, aesthetically pleasing environments. But don't let all that sugar and spice fool you. Libra are easily upset by the chaos of life and then the October-born can be as quarrelsome, as irritable and as intractable as any Sign in the Zodiac.

These are very social human beings. It’s difficult – even unnatural – for Libra to “go it alone”. More than any other Sign, they function best in “people” environments. At a party, you’ll find that Libra is the one playing host or hostess – no matter whose house it is – and looking fabulously at ease: they have a very artful way of serving cocktails and scintillating ideas with equal aplomb. Libra loathe cruelty, viciousness and vulgarity. And they detest overt conflict. So they do their best to cooperate and compromise with everyone around them. Their ideal for their own circle (and for society as a whole) is unity. And their cast of mind is artistic rather than intellectual: many Libra are drawn to creative fields, since their eye for beauty is often quite refined.

Libra is symbolized by the Scales of Balance, and just as a set of scales will teeter back and forth before achieving a new balance, Libra will vacillate to and fro between extremes: mental, emotional or physical. When the Libra does make a decision, however, you can probably bank on its integrity. The polar opposite of subjective Aries, the Libra is quite capable of objective judgment: irrespective of his own tastes, mores, philosophies or preferences. And even though Libra take a lot of heat for being indecisive, they make up for it with an idealism that has the power to change their world. Perhaps this is why there are more judges born under Libra than under any other Sun Sign and why the Scales have come to represent our system of justice.

However, once they have reached a conclusion Libra will not tolerate a divergent opinion: among their faults is an impatience of criticism and a greed for approval. Moreover, the negative Libra character may show frivolity, flirtatiousness and shallowness. It can be changeable and indecisive, impatient of routine, colorlessly conventional and timid, easygoing to the point of inertia and inappropriately docile: yet Libra can shock everyone around them with sudden, and inexplicable, storms of rage.

The Libra flair for tact and diplomacy is unparalleled in the Zodiac. And in business and diplomatic relations, the Libra is able (far more often than not) to accomplish what he desires without destroying relationships that could be valuable to him in the future. Great venture partners, they relish bouncing ideas off other people and eagerly contribute their talents to committed teams. But the ease with which they pursue any argument can sometimes make you wonder where the Libra really stands. Nothing irritates these natives' harmonizing intellect more than one-dimensional thinking. So, if they think your line of reasoning is too pat or simplistic, they'll purposely take the opposing view.

And while 'Lazy Libra' is a common phrase - the same languid style that puts everyone in a relaxed mood can lead to self-indulgence and a passive attitude toward life – those who would casually ascribe laziness to the October-born have never seen them in their more productive mode. Once they have committed themselves to a goal, Libra can become powerhouses: using their well-ordered intellects to accomplish in leaps and bounds tasks that might encumber other Signs. The trouble is that in planning any endeavor they can get so lost in the endless labyrinth of strategies, factors and options which have to be weighed and evaluated by their logical minds that Libra’s procrastination can give you the best portrayal of laziness you've ever seen.

Romantically Speaking: The Sun in Libra has a natural gift for being the ideal in the eyes of their beloved. And that is because they’re so instinctively aware of what it is the other wants and needs them to be. So, while some Libras end up losing their sense of self in the process, a more romantic, devoted partner is hard to find.

THE AQUARIUS PROFILE

Positive Traits
Friendly and Humanitarian
Progressive and Pioneering
Original and Inventive
Eccentric, Independent and Intellectual

Negative Traits
Intractable and Dogmatic
Perverse and Unpredictable
Unemotional and Detached
Isolated

The Sun in Aquarius has been called the “rebel” of the Zodiac because of their total commitment to their unique vision. They’re uncompromisingly anchored in their own lives and grant that same autonomy to others. And, because Aquarius instinctively appreciate diversity and have a sustaining confidence in their own convictions, they are extremely tolerant of the behaviors and opinions of others. So, with an innate sense that everyone should “do their own thing”, Aquarius often seem to be detached – and friendly – at the same time.

So, while the Aquarian nature is known as eccentric, that is only because it follows that personal golden thread of inspiration to the limits. Another name for this could be genius, since it pushes out into the road less traveled and then goes yet further. And while this sometimes leads to great achievement, there’s always a chance that it can also lead to isolation. However, quick, active and persevering (usually interacting with others with reason, moderation and good humor), the native’s distain for the status quo – unlike the social activism of Sagittarius or the overt revolt of Aries – is most usually held in check by a quiet optimism: that things, given time and patient crusade, will improve. Rather, his more subtle rebellion most usually manifests itself in unconventional dress or grooming, erratic behaviors and wry (devastating) sarcasm.

Too, despite the magnetic, forthcoming and open personality of the extrovert Aquarius and the humanistic traits of both types, neither makes friends readily. They do not give themselves easily - perhaps their judgment of human nature is too good for that - and are sometimes accounted condescending and cold. Even in the intimate companionship that they instinctively seek, they are fiercely independent. They dislike interference by others, however helpfully intended, and will accept it only on their own terms. But once they decide that another is worthy of their friendship, Aquarius are tenacious and extraordinarily loyal compatriots. However, if they are deceived their anger is terrible. And if disillusioned (usually because their own idealism causes them to demand more of others than is reasonable) Aquarius do not forgive.

Aquarius have a feeling of unity with nature and a desire for knowledge and truth that makes them admirable scientists: most especially astronomers and natural historians. These are the ones with a faraway look, most likely thinking brilliant and futuristic thoughts. Their minds seem to roam the outer edges of what is possible, and many of them make the impossible a reality as pioneers in science and technology. And their quirky, wholly original take on life gives them an edge should they venture into the Arts. The Aquarius talent for mimicry and parody serves them well as character actors or comedians. Their avant-garde tendencies are often expressed in writing (most usually poetry), public service broadcasting and musical innovation. And their altruism may find its voice in welfare fields or education.

Romantically Speaking: The Aquarius remains a sovereign being who needs an intellectual rapport to sustain a romance. An ideal mate inhabits a parallel universe and from it is able to accept the physical and mental distances that the Aquarius personality imposes. And it is often very surprising to see how much love can grow in the space between two people.

THE GEMINI PROFILE
Positive Traits

Adaptable and Versatile
Eloquent and Witty
Intellectual and Engaging
Charming, Youthful and Lively

Negative Traits
Nervous and Restless
Superficial and Inconsistent
Cunning and Duplicitous
Rumor-Mongering

Gemini, the Sign of the Twins, is dual-natured, elusive, complex and contradictory. To them, life is a game that must always be full of fresh moves and continuous entertainment and free of labor and routine. Charmers and clowns, they often wear a silly grin that seems to say that they get the cosmic joke that all is, after all, well: it’s really okay to sample everything from the smorgasbord of life. And, since they’re always finding something absurd to giggle over, you might hear the laughter of Gemini Suns before you see them. They’re great wits and their interest in people often thrusts them into the role of social ice breaker.

Their good qualities are attractive and come easily to them. They are affectionate, courteous, kind, generous, and thoughtful - provided none of the activities resulting from expressing these traits interferes too greatly with their own lives and comforts. And in social situations, even at their worst they are never dull - there is usually playfulness below the surface and they can be exhilarating conversationalists. However, often referred to as the dilettante of the Zodiac because they’ll try anything once and usually do, the Gemini needs to be able to reinvent himself many times and to follow the threads of inspiration wherever they lead. And that innate quality can make these natives seem restless and inconsistent. So, although Gemini may be hard to pin down and a bit challenging to deal with, if you can accept the shape-shifting nature of their personalities, they make excellent friends.

But be warned that like chameleons, they absorb and reflect every change in their environment and can become pessimistic, sullen, peevish and self-centered prattlers, boasters, liars and cheats if circumstances force them to struggle in any way.

Gemini have a keen and intuitive intelligence. They love cerebral challenges and though they dislike the labor of learning, their mental agility, energy and insatiable curiosity afford them a voracious appetite for knowledge. Many Gemini become veritable walking encyclopedias. And if a Gemini finds a subject worthy of his incredible kaleidoscopic mind, these individuals have the capacity to become masters of an art or science.

So, although their intellect is strongly analytical and sometimes gives them so great an ability to see both sides of a question that they vacillate and find it hard to make decisions, their cleverness and ingenuity may also very well be used to control and unify the duality of their natures into a most efficient unit. If faced with difficulties, they have little determination to worry at a problem until they find a solution - they will pick the brains of others.

Any work that combines quick-wittedness with a change of surroundings suits Gemini. They are often skilled manipulators of language and are usually very successful diplomats, academics, authors, poets, journalists and lawyers (albeit they are more brilliant than profound and more interested in theory than in practice). And any and every sales venue is, of course, sweet home to them.

Romantically Speaking: The Gemini knows that the world is vast and full of endless fascinations to explore and so they need an intellectual rapport with their mate. The ideal companions for them are individuals who think at their same speed of light. They need a certain kind of space to grow, and those who do manage to stay close to Gemini don’t try to hold on too tightly. Because, if the door of a relationship is open for them to come and go at will, they’ll usually, over time, prove their own brand of faithfulness.
