"Signs of Survival: China"
LAST EDITED ON 09-20-07 AT 02:58 AM (EST)

You need to know your opponent and you need to know yourself. And if you don't know yourself, you don't know your opponent, and you're never going to win. If you want to be a leader, you need to first be liked. And if you're not liked, your team will never follow you.
~ Host Jeff Probst, Scorpio ~

We herd sheep. We drive cattle. We lead people.
Lead me. Follow me. Or get out of my way.
~ General George S Patton, Scorpio ~

Welcome!

As you’ll see, Signs of Survival has a bit of a different look this Season.

The Superiors (Capricorn, Cancer, Leo and Scorpio)
and
The Subordinates (Gemini, Pisces, Taurus and Virgo)
and
The Soloists (Aquarius, Aries, Libra and Sagittarius)

are still with us as an analytically-useful categorization of the natural relationships/roles of the Signs within the Game.

But in keeping with the ‘Back to Basics’ theme of the Season, appearing with them is the equally analytically-useful categorization of the Signs by their natural temperaments and complements:

The Complementary Elements
‘Practical’ Earth (Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo)
and
‘Emotional’ Water (Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio)

and

The Complementary Elements
‘Physical’ Fire (Aries, Leo and Sagittarius)
and
‘Intellectual’ Air (Aquarius, Gemini and Libra)

Here, then, are

And a few of my own first impressions:

Not only would it seem that Fei Long enjoyed an athletic advantage in China. A quick glance at the Guide makes it apparent that it was also the more socially stable of the two initial tribes. And if the current spoilers are true – that the first two boots of the Season were Zhan Hu’s only two Subordinates – then, for all of us, what a hoot the ensuing Havoc in the Hu promises to be!

In her CBS interview, Courtney talks about the potential for conflict between her own values (and vocabulary) and Leslie’s. Keeping in mind that ‘Of all of the Zodiac’s natives, an Aries will most readily haul off and punch a nose’, the dynamic between those two ‘self-centered’ ladies should be fun to watch. And perhaps a real challenge for Fei Long’s young, ‘extremely tolerant’ alliance-builder.

Speaking of Todd – and noting that these natives' ‘strong-willed, forceful and attractive personalities present themselves as one or the other of two core types: the first shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the second exuberant, lively and exhibitionist’ – it is also going to be fascinating to watch China’s trio of
twenty-something male Aquarians while remembering Guatemala’s.

Appropriately, KO has already awarded Brian’s (“Richard Hatch Lite”) role to Todd. And the “nice” down-home Erik could only play the “very likeable” down-home Brandon. Leaving Frosti to fill Jamie’s overlarge, scenery-stomping shoes.

I sincerely hope he’s up to it. Jamie – ‘It is not paranoia if they really are out to get you!’ – was my favorite of the three.

Four introductory posts will follow this one. Each of them is imaginatively titled to announce an Element and contains:

The Profiles of the Signs associated with the Element,

The Sun and Moon Profiles of the natives of each Sign who played the Game this Season (Note: Because we don’t have access to the time of the Survivors’ birth, it is sometimes impossible to accurately determine which of two Combinations is applicable to the individual. In those instances, I’ve included both of the Profiles. But keep in mind that only one Sun and Moon Combination per person showed up in China . So, for several of the players, spoiling which personality made the trip will be our first assignment),

A link to the players’ biographies at CBS,

Courtesy of Bebo and Survivor Blows, a composite of Jeff Probst’s comments about the new Survivors,

My own comments.

And, as a handy reference for all of those intriguing comparisons, a list of its natives who have played the Game in other Seasons accompanies each of the Signs.

Complementary Earth and Water will be up later this afternoon or evening. Complementary Fire and Air should be up before the premier this Thursday.

1. "RE: Signs of Survival: China"
LAST EDITED ON 09-28-07 AT 04:19 AM (EST)

The ‘Practical’ Earth Signs are grounded and dependable. All of the earthy metaphors are appropriate here: ‘Salt of the earth’, ‘Feet firmly planted on the ground’, ‘Solid as a rock’, etc. Often referred to as the ‘builders’ of the Zodiac, creativity is a tangible proposition to these natives and they feel best once they have accumulated a goodly number of worldly possessions.

The Element of Earth also confers a sense of duty, responsibility and reliability to those in its sphere. These are the people you can count on to ‘be there’ when you need them. Tending toward caution and conservatism in desire and approach, their logical minds and measured responses display an innate recuperative capacity: much preferring a sure thing, these folks do not take big risks. That said, however, certainly in that they appreciate a good meal, congenial company and fine wine better than anyone else, they are also sensualists.

On the flip side:

Earth Signs can become so caught up in their objectives that they overlook the feelings and opinions of others. It is a big picture, after all, but these natives may be more concerned with the finish line than the journey they are taking. And the ever-present risk inherent in their acquisitive nature is that they may become greedy and far too materialistic.

Positive Traits
Practical and prudent. Ambitious and disciplined. Patient and careful.
Humorous and reserved.
Negative Traits
Pessimistic and fatalistic. Miserly and grudging. Overly conventional and rigid.

The Capricorn Personality

Capricorn is one of the most stable and serious of the Zodiac types. These independent, rocklike characters have many sterling qualities. They are normally confident, strong-willed and calm. They are the major finishers of most projects begun by the 'pioneering' signs.

But, while they have a great respect for authority, they may not be willing to listen to the opinions and suggestions of others. And as the ranking authority figure in a given situation they expect their underlings to be as self- disciplined as they themselves are and to perform every task undertaken to the highest standard. They are often humorless. There is also a tendency to pessimism and melancholy that many Capricorns are unable to keep to themselves: especially if they fail personally.

And mood swings are not the only reason Capricorns deserve the adjective based on their name - capricious. They can be surprisingly and suddenly witty and subtle for the quiet, reserved individuals they seem to be. But they also have a tendency to ruin things by unexpected and utterly irresponsible bouts of flippancy.

Additionally, Capricorns are very status-minded. Even if their immediate finances don't permit an extravagant lifestyle, January-born can unconsciously adopt the mores, attitudes and mannerisms of the elite. The trappings of success are important to these natives not only for personal pleasure but also for the impression they can make on others.

Positive Traits
Patient and reliable. Warmhearted and loving.
Persistent and determined.
Placid and security loving.
Negative Traits
Jealous and possessive. Resentful and inflexible.
Self-indulgent and greedy.

The Taurus Personality

This Sign’s characteristics are solidity, practicality, extreme determination and strength of will - no one will ever drive Taurus, but they will willingly and loyally follow a leader they trust. They are stable, balanced, conservative and law-abiding citizens and lovers of peace (possessing all the best qualities of the bourgeoisie). They will do everything in their power to maintain the security of the status quo.

So, on rare occasions a Taurus may be an obstinately and exasperatingly self-righteous, unoriginal, rigid, ultraconservative, argumentative and querulous boor: stuck in a self-centered rut. And, whether their characters are positive or negative, they need someone to stroke their egos with a frequent, "Well Done!" Luckily, Taurus has a knack for attracting praise. It is amazing how people will bend over backwards to please them.

They are faithful and generous friends with a great capacity for affection. But they rarely establish intimacies outside their social rank (to which they are ordinarily excessively loyal). And in the main, they are gentle, even-tempered, good-natured, modest and slow to anger. If they are provoked, however, they can explode into violent, uncontrolled outbursts. Equally unexpected are their occasional sallies into humor and exhibitions of fun.

Taurus has a strong aesthetic taste. And allied to his appreciation of all things beautiful is a love for the good things of life: pleasure, comfort, luxury and good food and wine.

Moreover, these natives don’t like to be pushed around by what they consider flights of fancy. Changes in their surroundings or routines disturb their equilibrium. And if the change is too abrupt or fundamental to his comfort, the shock may be too much for the Bull. He may actually become physically ill.

In their work, Taurus are industrious and ambitious: unafraid of getting their hands dirty and at their best in routine positions of trust and responsibility where there is little need of urgency, little risk of change and a pension at the end. Yet they are creative and are also often founders of enterprises where the fruits are of their own labors.

ABOUT AARON

His Taurus Sun/Libra Moon Profile

Internally, these individuals have sufficient self-confidence and strength of character to pursue and secure any goal they wish. Others, however, perceiving them as affable and affectionate, do not suspect their latent ambitions. And others will exert an influence on this personality. Nevertheless, the Taurus/Libra psychological base is solid, and it is not implied that they are easily swayed. Their natural impulses lead them to be receptive only to concrete, well-defined ideas.

And although usually generous and free, these natives can be, on occasion, inclined to frugality and overly concerned with financial matters.

~ or ~

His Taurus Sun/Scorpio Moon Profile

This combination of opposite signs denotes a very strong personality. Internally, these natives are warm-hearted and amorous and have a tremendous amount of patience, firmness, and self-determination. They are intensely ambitious. And their personality is in keeping with the individuality just outlined. Others view them as very determined, assured, and self-reliant (although often they are too brash and direct, and their remarks can be offensive).

They are attracted to luxuries (and will work hard to secure them) and exhibit a strong appetite for pleasure. However, at times they sense that their pursuit of both is at odds with their most essential nature – a rooted tranquility. Too, the Taurus gift of patience is somewhat overshadowed by their irritability and tendency to anger.

Jeff’s Take:

"Aaron is a threat. He's a charming, good-looking guy, and he's got a side to him that's cold like steel. He's a bartender and he told us that he sizes up people fast to get a bigger tip.

I thought, ‘If he's telling the truth, he's going to do very well, because that's the essence of Survivor: reading people and knowing what makes them tick and how to get to them so you can give them what they want’.

I think Aaron is very good at knowing what people need, and how to give it to them. That will keep a lot of people on his side. He'd tell you one thing and there was always something else going on. He's the guy who could be playing everybody. I also think Aaron is probably used to leading, and that will either really work well for him or kill him. But he's not a passive guy.”

My Own:

There is a difference between control and leadership. And the difference between the two could not be better illustrated than it is in the natural relationships of Libra and Scorpio to groups. Libra will, instinctively, attempt to covertly ‘control’ the group from an independent – central – position of trust. Scorpio will, instinctively, attempt to overtly ‘lead’ the group from a dependent – upfront – position of authority.

So, which influence does Aaron exhibit?

Well, although both Jeff and Aaron (in his CBS video) talk about the Taurus’ inclination to “lead”, they also talk much more about his ability to “play” … everyone. Too, Aaron is visibly uncomfortable during those portions of the video that focus on his ‘game plan’. As any ‘warm-hearted and loving’ – ‘faithful and generous’ – Taurus should be when revealing his intention to deceive and manipulate tribemates!

And that, coupled with Jeff’s emphasis on the “cold steel side”of Aaron’s nature and on his observation that Aaron is “not a passive guy” causes me to conclude that Aaron will be playing the Game with a disingenuously diplomatic (and when necessary to his own considerable ambitions, duplicitous) Libra Moon. Were he a Taurus/Scorpio that “very strong personality” would be too readily apparent to require warning labels.

ABOUT DENISE

Her Taurus Sun/Pisces Moon Profile

This synthesis of character results in a determined but retiring individual. There is more internal calm than their behavior indicates. Firmly rooted at the core, their emotions have the upper hand in determining this native’s actions: often at the expense of reason. Too, their gentleness can result in inaction. So that they can appear irresolute and easily changeable, when in fact this may not be the case.

~ or ~

Her Taurus Sun/Aries Moon Profile

Outstanding traits: perseverance, stubbornness, and practicality.

Ambitious, their search for security will always proceed from a solid base. But changes, unforeseen events, and reforms can threaten their stability. However, their reasoning is very clear and follows definite and acceptable patterns. Warm-hearted and kind, they have great patience in enduring misfortune and readily sympathize with others.

But, fair notice! When something tries the patience of these natives, they are apt to become violent without warning.

Jeff’s Take:

"Denise is known as 'The Lunch Lady," and she's one of the most endearing people we've had on the show in a long time. She has an unmistakable haircut -- a mullet -- and it's such a fascinating hairstyle you can't help but ask her about it. She has it, she tells us, because it fits her life. When we asked her about it, her answer was so charming. She said, 'I work with food, so I have a need to keep my hair short to keep it out of the food. But I'm also a woman, and I'm a wife, and I want to be sexy for my husband, so I want some length in the back.

There you go.

You hear her say that, and it pretty much sums up Denise: What you see, is absolutely what you will get. There's nothing pretentious about her. She's very honest and endearing and a hard worker. I just adore Denise."

My Own:

Taurus Sun/Aries Moon!

I can’t find, in Denise’s CBS video or biography or in Jeff’s comments, a hint of the emotional complexities and contradictory behaviors associated with Pisces. Rather, I think that we’re about to be treated to all that is best of what-you-see-is-what-you-get Taurus and Aries.

I do hope, though, that when she is booted at (assuming the current spoilers to be accurate) F4 because of her strengths rather than her weaknesses, it won’t be without one of the bursts of monumental anger for which both Signs are … infamous.

And although it would seem that Denise managed Survivor very well, it is always helpful to remember that the Game’s environment of constant crises/constant change – the assault of the unfamiliar – is particularly difficult for Taurus. In a nutshell, these natives get homesick.

Two other quick notes about Denise:

Both born and raised in Revere, Massachusetts, she is a year younger than Amy (Guatemala), the city’s first female Sergeant Detective.

No Taurus has ever won Survivor.

Positive Traits
Modest and shy. Meticulous and reliable. Practical and diligent.
Intelligent and analytical.
Negative Traits
Fussy and a worrier. Overcritical and harsh.
Perfectionist and conservative.

The Virgo Personality

Virgo is the only sun sign represented by a female and it is sometimes thought of as a delicate young girl and sometimes as an intelligent, but rather pedantic and spinsterish, older woman. The latter impression is sometimes confirmed by the Virgo’s precision, refinement, fastidiousness, conventionality and aristocratic attitude of reserve. They are usually observant, shrewd, critically inclined, judicious, patient and practical.

Both sexes have considerable charm and dignity and in their unassuming, cheerful and agreeable fashion, they can be sensible, discreet, well spoken, wise and witty. But while in many respects Virgos are the epitome of social grace and propriety, their sterling etiquette is more apt to be scripted than spontaneous: the result of careful thought and hours of mental practice.

Intellectually, Virgo is enquiring, methodical and logical, studious and teachable. They combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. Thoroughness, hard work and conscientiousness are their hallmarks. They have an excellent eye for detail but they may be so meticulous that they neglect larger issues. And, because of their ability to see every angle of a multi-faceted problem, they are as unhappy with abstract theories as they are with intractable philosophies: placing no confidence in either.

Moreover, for as much as his intellect aids analysis, it also abets the Virgo’s compulsion to criticize. Nothing escapes these perfectionists’ eyes. And in their scrutiny of incongruities, these natives leave no stone … nor anyone … unexamined: as critical, and unforgiving, of themselves as they are of others. So that they may bring the art of self-concealment to a high pitch (hiding their apprehensions about themselves and their often considerable sympathy with other people under the mantle of an undemonstrative clinician) with the result that they shrink from committing themselves to friendship, make few relationships, and are careful to keep those they do make superficial.

Given their qualities, Virgos are much more effective in subordinate rather than leadership positions. Responsibility irks them and they often lack the breadth of strategic vision that leadership requires. They are essentially tacticians and excel at the attainment of limited objectives: needing the stimuli of immediacy and prestige attendant to specialization.

ABOUT STEVE ('CHICKEN')

His Virgo Sun/Leo Moon Profile

'Inwardly these natives have the characteristics of prudence, common sense, and practicality. Their outward personality, however, appears as ardent, passionate, and aggressive. They have a tendency to involve themselves in activities that are not harmonious with their innate characteristics.

The dominance of Virgo makes them hard-working, foresighted persons who are fond of cleanliness and privacy. Externally, the Moon in Leo will place them in positions in which they must exert authority in a positive and clear manner and they will appear as happy, strong, playful and clever individuals. However, they will also be very preoccupied with their dignity and how they appear to others (despite an inner voice that tells them that they should apply themselves to more down-to-earth matters)'.

~ or ~

His Virgo Sun/Virgo Moon Profile

Hard-working, this native’s constant preoccupation with detail makes him a most careful craftsman. And he is especially adept at tasks that require exactitude, acute observation and change of detail that does not completely alter his ‘style’. And, wishing to be recognized for his intellectual qualities, he does not require compliments or flattery to be content.
Essentially Virgo, he is humanitarian and broad-minded: without going beyond presently accepted social standards. He is prudent and prefers to plan ahead. And although he appreciates privacy, he is not reclusive.

Jeff’s Take:

"They don't make a lot of guys like Chicken anymore. He's an old-school, hardworking guy who knows what it is to build a shelter, get firewood, build a fire, try to catch fish — and then have lunch. If you put him around people who aren't his age and don't have his work ethic, he doesn't understand.

That's the toughest thing for Chicken the first few days, figuring out the balance between being Chicken -- a guy who knows how to build a shelter -- and being this guy that's playing that needs to blend in with all these young people who only think they know how to build a shelter. That's his big struggle. He's going to have to adapt and it's not an easy task. This is a guy who's lived on his own for so long and does things his own damn way, 'This is how we do 'em and this is how it works’.

Well, that doesn't work on Survivor, so Chicken found himself in the situation of either stick to my roots and be the first one gone or adapt and learn how to deal with these younger people."

My Own:

‘Virgo combine mental ingenuity with the ability to produce a clear analysis of the most complicated problems. Thoroughness, hard work and conscientiousness are their hallmarks.’

‘It is a Leo’s birthright to lead, and they'll naturally assume center stage without being asked. However, if that authority is questioned, they may abandon a project entirely. Outgoing, spontaneously warm-hearted and plain-spoken (but poor judges of character), Leos simply can't function if they're not in a position to lead and are more disillusioned than the average if let down by those they trust.

However, even after they discover that they've been duped or abandoned, most Leos are too big about it to retaliate.’

Bravo, Virgo Sun! Cheers, Leo Moon!

Let them eat Fortune Cookies!

ABOUT JEAN-ROBERT

His Virgo Sun/Aries Moon Profile

'The key words to the character of these natives are practicality, analysis, determination, and utilitarianism, to which is added the dynamism and aggressive tendencies of Aries: allowing all these traits to be in harmony. Essentially, though, they are still Virgo: tacticians who usually choose not to take the lead and psychologically feel much calmer when others do.
Although outwardly appearing to be passionate and intense, the Sun in Virgo makes these individuals internally cool and retiring. However, their attentiveness to detail is sometimes so exaggerated that it will cause problems in their emotional lives.'

~ or ~

His Virgo Sun/Taurus Moon Profile

This is a very earthy combination that provides its natives a good dose of common sense, practicality, and utilitarianism. Necessary tasks (especially those requiring exactitude and observation) are enjoyed and not avoided, and the mutable nature of Virgo means that these individuals are adaptable and enjoy change of detail in their work. As long as other people do not violate his privacy too casually and without invitation, the Virgo/Taurus is happy.

They appear to others as working people: reliable, careful and pleasant in their relationships. However, their exaggerated attention to detail and their tendency to be overly possessive can lead to criticism from others. But, if those natural traits are inhibited, irritability and nervousness may be the result.

So that, their development of recreational interests not related to earning a livelihood or maintaining family relationships would be good therapy. For everyone.

Jeff’s Take:

"Extremely confident, to the point of cocky arrogance. Part of that is his plan, part of that's his natural personality. He's a big guy with a big, big personality, exactly what you want a poker player on Survivor to be. Jean-Robert will tell you what he's going to do and you don't know if he'll do it or not, because he's a card player."

My Own:

I’ll play the Virgo Sun/Aries Moon:

‘Given their qualities, Virgos are much more effective in subordinate rather than leadership positions.

‘Because their approach to life is somewhat simplistic, what Aries can accomplish without a lot of distracting nuances and complexities to slow him down is staggering. Don't, however, put them in a position where they'll have to deal with complex emotions or with a problem requiring delicate handling or subtlety. They're simply not equipped for it.’

I like confidence, cockiness. I appreciate strategic arrogance. And, as you’ve seen, I can forgive Steve his early departure. He had the excuse of his devil Leo Moon. But if Jean-Robert left at F10 because his big, fat ego just wouldn’t stay in its most effective place, he has none. The poker table’s natural clinical provocateur should know that solid citizenship – leadership – is not his winning hand.

2. "RE: Signs of Survival: China"
LAST EDITED ON 09-28-07 AT 06:22 AM (EST)

The ‘Emotional’ Water Signs are intuitive, sensitive and empathetic. How things feel is what matters to these nurturers and they base their actions on sense, rather than on logic or intellect. The receptive talents of these individuals are remarkably high. Compassionate and understanding, Water Sign natives are extraordinarily adept at assimilating the feelings of others, processing them and offering plans or solutions that will usually be considerate of all.

Water natives often translate their sense of the world artistically. They covet aesthetic beauty -- and for everyone to be happy as a result of it. Much like still water can become stagnant, however, inactive Water Sign natives are not at their best. They feel most fulfilled when they are helping others, and they usually do so in enchanting ways.

Seeing things more clearly than others, and feeling them more acutely than do the natives of other Signs, they are frequently referred to as ‘psychic’.

The flip side of this fluid Element is the tendency of these individuals to brood. Susceptible to mood swings, at their worst they can become self-indulgent, controlling and hostage to a fantasy world.

Positive Traits
Emotional and loving. Intuitive and imaginative. Shrewd and cautious.
Protective and sympathetic.
Negative Traits
Changeable and moody. Overemotional and touchy. Clinging and unable to let go.

The Cancer Personality

Cancer’s emotions are as changeable as the Moon itself, waxing and waning with the prevailing emotional atmosphere around them. In fact, the Cancer temperament is a veritable kaleidoscope of ever-changing emotion. During the course of a conversation, you may notice – passing fleetingly across the faces of July-born – scores of distinctively different emotions. No one ever repeated or expressed in exactly the same way. Quite simply, Cancers exude emotion. No other Sign has so pervasive an emotional aura as to either lift your spirits to ecstatic heights or to fill you with clouds of gloom, depending upon his mood.

'Home is where the heart is,' and this idiom has no greater ring of truth than when describing how the Cancer feels about his abode. Home is where he dreams, lives, plays and loves. And it is the only place he feels secure.

Cancer is never truly happy unless they have someone or something to care for and their innate understanding of human emotion allows them to see through the pretenses of other signs and lend encouragement, support or sympathy when needed. There is a strong maternal instinct in both sexes and it is amazing to discover how many July-born have acquired the appendage – ‘good ol'– to their names.

These natives love to dream of far away places and times past and will talk about historical events as if they were actually there. Most Cancer have a special reverence for the past, and if you ask them to tell you whom of all people they admire most, they'll most often rattle off the names of several prominent historical figures.

But there is a private, reclusive part to every Cancer. Because of their extreme emotional sensitivity, they fear ridicule and would rather retreat than defend themselves. And there is always lurking in the background of their personalities a foreboding of disaster. As if from some hidden cue, the Crab can suddenly retreat into the watery burrows of his inner consciousness and not be seen for days. Try and question him about his absence and he'll probably not know what you're talking about.

However, if Cancers can reconcile the personal conflict of their urge to be outgoing with the reserve that causes them to withdraw into themselves, then at best they can inspire a generation, especially the youthful part of it, by their idealism. They also have a penchant for trade or business and are often successful as a captain of industry. This is because they are excellent organizers with a good sense of value and economy that they may combine with a flair for invention and originality.

ABOUT JAIME

Her Cancer Sun/Sagittarius Moon Profile

This astrological combination produces a complex individual. Internally at ease and externally in passionate pursuit of the realization of higher ideals, these intriguing personalities deal daily with a basic inner conflict. Essentially easy-going, and home-loving, they are perceptive of their environment and all external influences. They are sensitive to others and are most appreciative of frank, spontaneous, and friendly relationships. Talented, they have the potential for developing genius in philosophy and religion. But they also tend to be narrow-minded and sectarian, forgetting that the views of others can be as valid as their own.

Others, however, see them as a restless and unstable personality, both mentally and physically. Nevertheless, their disposition appears honorable, kind, and sincere. Usually very active and fond of physical exertion, they also possess a strong intuition: people often come to them for advice.

Jeff’s Take:

"An interesting combination of sorority girl and honor student. She's very pretty and she's from South Carolina, and at first glance you kind of get this, 'Oh, I'm just a little sorority girl.' She's very flirty, and she's good at it.

But she's got a pretty good head on her shoulders, especially when it comes to dealing with people and the strategy of dealing with people. I knew early on she was kind of the tribe mediator. Jaime factors into the strategy of her tribe quite a bit. She can hold her own. She's definitely not wimpy."

My Own:

A Rain Check, please.

Positive Traits
Imaginative and sensitive. Compassionate and kind. Selfless and unworldly.

Pisceans are deservedly popular with all kinds of people in part because their easygoing, affectionate, malleable and submissive natures offer no threat or challenge to stronger and more exuberant characters. But they will not be able to maintain for very long friendships or associations with those who are too materialistic.

And because their natures are often too otherworldly for practical purposes (they tend to exist emotionally rather than rationally and instinctively rather than intellectually), the nine-to-five life is not easy for them.

The challenge to Pisces natives, then, is to somehow integrate their affinity with the more subtle planes into constructive working relationships. Fortunately, Pisceans are usually versatile and intuitive; quickly master new skills; observe and listen well; and are receptive to new ideas and atmospheres. And all these factors can combine to produce remarkable creativity in literature, music and art. Similarly, in medicine and social work, Pisceans find an outlet for their compassion and mercy while their professional statures curb the likelihood of their being taken advantage of. And, if they're typical March-born, they are not elitists: saint, sinner, murderer, thief, liar, rich or poor - deserving or undeserving - the Piscean instinctively recognizes the worth of the individual and can overlook the apparent causes of their circumstances.

However, they are better working either by themselves or in subordinate positions. Most would be afraid to manage more than a small department, worrying always that they would fail in a crisis.

ABOUT JAMES

His Pisces Sun/Scorpio Moon Profile

Their innermost nature sensitive and receptive, these natives are often misled into committing actions that they can’t possibly justify. And so, having erected an elaborate system of self-defense that results in a hard and selfish external shell, they are often judged more unyielding than they really are.

However, blessed with an innate capacity for investigation and possessing real business abilities and the necessary energy to effectively utilize those positive traits, they often achieve success.

Jeff’s Take:

"Physically the biggest guy we've ever had on the show and surprisingly, one of the most agile. I thought that James might be a guy who couldn't really stretch or move -- he was just all muscle -- but you see in the very first challenge, he goes up against , this young, hardcore kid, and they go head-to-head, and Frosti's got nothing on James.

He's actually a gentle giant. A very decent guy who works extremely hard. But if you rile him up … he will say whatever he's thinking at whatever volume he wants to say it.

That was interesting and a bit of a liability for him out there."

My Own:

Jeff’s observations would seem to indicate that James is prone to angry outbursts. His Profile would seem to indicate that James will exhibit a defensive and isolating hardness. And both describe a sensitive, receptive, gentle and decent character.

Dichotomous?

Not if you have a Pisces eldest daughter and younger brother with Scorpio Moons.

As I have …

Positive Traits
Determined and forceful. Emotional and intuitive. Powerful and passionate.
Exciting and magnetic
Negative Traits
Jealous and resentful. Compulsive and obsessive. Secretive and obstinate.

The Scorpio Personality

Scorpios are the most intense, profound and powerful characters in the Zodiac. There is a harnessed aggression, an immense forcefulness, magnetic intensity and often strangely hypnotic personality in their tranquil, but watchful, composure.

Yet they are deeply sensitive and easily moved by their emotions. And that sensitivity, together with a propensity for extreme likes and dislikes, make them easily hurt: quick to detect or imagine insult or injury to themselves and easily aroused to ferocious anger. And because they relate to their fellows only as leaders, they can be blunt to those they dislike to the point of cruelty.

Fortunate that their strong reasoning powers are tempered with imagination and intuition and that these gifts are usually accompanied by critical perception and analytical capacity, Scorpios often find fulfillment in the ice-cold self-control and detachment of the surgeon or soldier and the concentration of the research scientist. And any profession in which investigation and analysis are relevant may attract these charismatic "twice-born" characters. They may also become masters of the written and spoken word. This sun sign includes among its natives more geniuses than does any other.

At the other extreme is the procrastinator: the man or woman who is capable of so much that they do nothing and become indolent and self-indulgent: requiring extravagant praise and flattery from those whom they make their cronies.

ABOUT DAVE

His Scorpio Sun/Taurus Moon Profile

With a fixed course in life and seldom torn by indecision, the cheerful manner of these individuals assures that they are cut out for social and business pursuits. Moreover, their temperament and persistence give them the ability to attract interesting ventures and to see them through to the end.

Essentially, they seek security, both financial and domestic, because it appeals to their practical nature. Fortunately, Scorpio’s showmanship and magnetism will counterbalance the Taurus determination that could, without it, produce a somewhat stolid personality.

Needs to work on: the art of forgiveness and the tendency to stubbornness inherent in both Signs.

Jeff’s Take:

One … "Dave is crazy. To his credit, he's a workaholic but sometimes to a fault. He fully embraces The Art of War from a strategic point of view — like, how to work with his tribe. Dave jumps out in the first few days and he's a delight to watch in his zaniness. You'll remember Dave for sure."

Two … "Dave Cruser is nuts. Dave works to the point of exhaustion, then loses his mind, and continues to try and contribute. He's just zany enough to be entertaining and annoying if you live with him. But at the heart of Dave is a big heart. The guy works so hard from the second he gets out there. He really wants to build something. He really wants to have a group of people. But he's a guy that is going to need to study 'The Art of War' early if he's going to stay long."

My Own:

Lord! What a mass of contradictions!

First, Jeff can’t decide whether Dave ‘fully embraced The Art of War’ or needed to get crackin’ on it!

Then, its author clearly failed to factor in the Survivor crises experience and the subject’s recent exposure to that torturous tome when he issued the blissfully optimistic Scorpio Sun/Taurus Moon Profile that we just read …

So now, you and I are stranded in the middle of nowhere at the jumping-off point for China with Dave’s gentle, even-tempered, good-natured, modest and slow-to-anger (Subordinate) Taurus Moon and his showoff (Superior) Scorpio Sun that dictates his inability to relate to his fellows as anything other than a leader.

With an overly-sensitive, placid, hair-triggered, docile, bourgeois, self-indulgent, workaholic – genius!

Who “works to the point of exhaustion, then loses his mind, and continues to try and contribute”.

So, what do we make of Dave?

Well, Jeff says he’s “crazy”, “nuts” and “zany”. But he also says that he “continues to try to contribute”

And I wonder if one of the reasons that we will "remember Dave" is that (given his Taurus Moon and that Sign's vulnerability to change-induced illness and his Scorpio Sun and that Sign's vulnerability to debilitating obsessions) he may be this Season’s medical casualty.

3. "Chinese Zodiac"
I talked to Georgiana and she thought that this might be interesting to also look at the Chinese Zodiac for this year.

I am very much a complete amateur at Chinese zodiac signs and not up for any of my own interpretation.

Background

You cannot just use birth year as the zodiac is based on the lunar Chinese year and here is the source I used to make sure I got the January and February births correct as the Chinese New Year moves around.

http://www.holymtn.com/astrology/year.htm

The Chinese zodiac is a 60 year cycle of 12 animals that repeat in the same order and 5 elements (water wood fire earth and metal) that repeat in a more complicated order. Each animal is found in each of the 5 elements.

Note: some signs have more than one animal used to represent them Rabbits/Cats and Goats/Sheep are two of these

This is the year of the Fire Pig and I got information about this year here: http://www.chineseastrology.com/wu/pigyear.php

BEST year for: Tigers
VERY GOOD year for: Goats, Rabbits, Pigs
GOOD year for: Roosters, Dragons, Dogs
MIXED year for: Horses, Oxen, Rats
DIFFICULT year for: Monkeys, Snakes

A small part of the analysis of what this year will bring.

”Behaviorally, we may see the choosing of sides and the emergence of the 'white hats and the black hats' – as the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' square off, so to speak. Basically, in 2007, the good become superior and the bad become worse. The enlightened continue on their path to understanding and contentment, while the spiritually bankrupt slip farther away from their true selves. Take a stand, speak your mind and feel the closure of this Pig year.”

Could be an interesting competition.

Specific information for some of the elements

“Fire is in harmony with Earth, produced by Wood, destructive to Metal and is conquered by Water. Elementally, 2007's Yin Fire brings "happiness and contentment" to those born into Yang Earth years (Earth Rat, Earth Tiger, Earth Dragon, Earth Horse, Earth Monkey, Earth Dog).

It brings "unexpected fortune" and good luck to those born into Yin Water years (Water Ox, Water Rabbit, Water Snake, Water Goat, Water Rooster, Water Pig)...while bringing luck with "earned wealth" to those born into Yang Water years (Water Rat, Water Tiger, Water Dragon, Water Horse, Water Monkey, Water Dog).

Yin Fire brings opportunities to make beneficial changes to those born into Yang Metal years (Metal Rat, Metal Tiger, Metal Dragon, Metal Horse, Metal Monkey, Metal Dog)...while bringing life changing or challenging events to those born into Yin Metal years (Metal Ox, Metal Rabbit, Metal Snake, Metal Goat, Metal Rooster, Metal Pig)”.

Sigh, the place I used to go for specific element for the animal info seems to be gone, but this appears to be a pretty good site for that info so I will use that. The element changes the nature of the animal so I like using sites that separate out the 5 elements.

Individual Information

Aaron ... April 25, 1975 (Ohio)
Wood Rabbit
Very Good Year for Rabbits

Wood Rabbits tend to be the least bit indecisive. This is probably due to their always wanting to play the peacemaker and not wanting to hurt other people’s feelings. Wood Rabbits are incredibly generous souls and like to avoid the spotlight instead preferring to live amongst others. These people are always kind enough to help you move into a new house, make you a hot cup of coffee or to listen while you rant and rave about your latest character flaw. The Wood Rabbit can sometimes be too kind for his own good, thus causing him to be taken advantage of and sometimes even used by others unknowingly. Rabbits have to learn to say no and to out their feet down or their cups will overflow.

Amanda ... August 3, 1984 (Montana)
Wood Rat
Mixed Year for Rats

Despite having a remarkable facade of self-confidence, deep down, Wood Rats are the least sure of themselves compared to other Rats. However, they wouldn't dream of showing this side of themselves to anyone. Only close companions of a Wood Rat would ever suspect that he or she had such self-doubt. In fact Wood Rats are often worried about downfall, despite their ability to find success. Well-liked, proficient, and good leaders at work, Wood Rats seem to function best when they are surrounded by family and friends. Cordial and delicate, they are usually well loved by family, friends and peers.

Ashley ... May 26, 1979 (New York)
Earth Sheep
Very Good year for Sheep

The Earth element gives the Sheep a grounded effect. Although he struggles with a lack of self-confidence, this Sheep is a very stable person. They are independent and practical, leaning more towards conservancy than liberality. An Earth Sheep’s family is his most important asset and he spends his life working hard to provide for his loved ones. Earth Sheep are born with a joy for life that generally becomes infectious as you get to know him.

Chicken (Steve) ... September 2, 1959 (Virginia)
Earth Pig
Very Good Year for Pigs

Laid back and reliable, Earth Pigs are at their happiest at home with their families. They are organized and pragmatic, preparing a strategy for every project they take on. They are fruitful at work and are content being one of the employees. Even so, Earth Pigs may compensate for this by asking for more money at review time. These Pigs love a good time and so may overindulge at times.

Courtney ... March 26, 1981 (Massachusetts)
Metal Rooster
Good Year for Roosters while bringing life changing or challenging events to metal roosters
I am not making this up

Metal Roosters can come off as arrogant and stuck up at times. They need a cushion for that overextended ego and someone to make sure it stays inflated. They are reasonable people who seem to analyze every decision they make and every situation they find themselves in. They are standoffish at times and can let their aggression get in the way of a blossoming friendship or romance. These Roosters should take a breather from their egos long enough to really enjoy what they have to offer.

Dave ... October 26, 1969 (USA)
Earth Rooster
Good Year for Roosters

This Rooster is overtly organized. He is a little reserved and quite careful in his decision-making. These Roosters are hard workers as well, and can handle several tasks at once. They are detail-oriented who are quite efficient and self-sufficient. They take on responsibility without a cause and are motivated only in wanting to be successful. Sometimes they can be abrasive with colleagues if work is not up to their standards. This can cause resentment, so the Earth Rooster must be careful in his approach of his point of view, being sure to be honest and still kind.

Denise ... May 5, 1967 (Massachusetts)
Fire Sheep
Very Good year for Sheep

Fire Sheep are not as likely to get their feelings hurt nor are they as likely to desire the approval of others as typical Sheep are. They are capable of taking care of themselves, standing up for themselves and putting themselves first. They are vivacious and charismatic, preferring theater to any of the other arts. Fire Sheep generally enjoy a tight circle of friends and family and enjoy the social limelight.

Erik ... January 31, 1981 (South Carolina)
Metal Monkey
Difficult Year for Monkeys with opportunities to make beneficial changes for metal monkeys

Persuasive and passionate, this Monkey is a warm person. He is successful due to his innate determination and ambitious nature. He works hard to climb the ladder of success and prefers to work alone. They are loyal employees, always prepared and tactful with answers and upper management. In love these Monkeys are just as loyal as well as loving and affectionate.

Frosti ... February 15, 1987 (Michigan)
Fire Rabbit
Very Good Year for Rabbits

Fire adds an unspoken magnetism and mystery to the Rabbit. These creatures have a burning desire to get out there and live life to its fullest. They are active and adventurous and love anything that sparks their creativity or curiosity. They can throw tantrums here and there, if provoked, but most of the time they work very hard to avoid conflict or unpleasant confrontations. Fire Rabbits are charming and tend to push their emotions into the backs of their minds, but will speak up if necessary.

Jaime ... June 30, 1985 (Florida)
Wood Ox
Mixed Year for Oxen

Understanding and fair, these are the least unyielding of the Oxen and the most apt to change and accept new ideas. A more liberal attitude gives them the ability to appreciate the value of being a part of a team, and other members of the team respect the high principles of the Wood Ox. They are particularly self-confident giving them an air of unspoken authority. This characteristic means that Wood Oxen are often chosen as leaders or spokespeople. They also have a shorter fuse than other Ox people, and are more likely to be outspoken or to stand up in a crowd to be heard. These Oxen are quite devoted to those they love and make strong and affectionate friends and relations.

James ... March 9, 1977 (Louisiana)
Fire Snake
Difficult Year for Snakes

Fire Snakes can be a bit loud, speaking their minds and smothering you with their opinions. This does add a twist to his dynamic and vibrant character, as he is quite the extrovert. These Snakes have a great wisdom. They are intriguing communicators who leave you breathless after a conversation. Fire Snakes can change even the most obstinate mind with their powers of persuasion, convincing you their opinions or ideas are better than yours. This does make them a little self-centered, but you can’t say they aren’t driven for success.

Jean Robert ... September 17, 1970 (New York)
Metal Dog
Good Year for Dogs with opportunities to make beneficial changes for Metal Dogs

Metal Dogs have extremely high standards and expect a lot of themselves and of others. They are loyal and hold a strong outlook about the direction they want their life to take. They choose their friends and causes with care, as they do not plan to ever not support these people and things again. Once they have committed themselves, there is little to no turning back. They are bold, unafraid to disagree out loud about anything they feel is unjust or unfair. Metal Dogs are easily stressed if a plan does not go accordingly. They find it difficult to relax when there are things to be done.

Leslie ... March 25, 1969 (USA)

Peih Gee ... April 7, 1978 (California)
Earth Horse
Mixed Year for Horses while Yin Fire brings "happiness and contentment" to Earth Horses

Earth Horses are able to see situations from all angles and corners. They are relatively easygoing, preferring to determine each pro and con before making a final decision. Earth Horses work hard to accomplish goals they have set and would rather take longer to do an outstanding job than to work shorter and shave a little quality. They have great senses of humor and are extremely adaptable in most instances.

Sherea ... July 31, 1981 (South Carolina)
Metal Rooster
Good Year for Roosters while bringing life changing or challenging events to metal roosters

Todd ... January 29, 1985 (Utah)
Wood Rat

Despite having a remarkable facade of self-confidence, deep down, Wood Rats are the least sure of themselves compared to other Rats. However, they wouldn't dream of showing this side of themselves to anyone. Only close companions of a Wood Rat would ever suspect that he or she had such self-doubt. In fact Wood Rats are often worried about downfall, despite their ability to find success. Well-liked, proficient, and good leaders at work, Wood Rats seem to function best when they are surrounded by family and friends. Cordial and delicate, they are usually well loved by family, friends and peers.

Snidget,

How fantastic!

I would still be making excuses for not quite having all of this fascinating material together ... a month from now.

I have to work today (the curse of the retailed), but I'll be back with comments sometime this weekend.

In the meantime, though, I need to correct one thing. And I don't know if it will make any difference at all. But, Peih-Gee was born in Hong Kong. She moved to California at a young age. I apologize.

And you are awesome.

6. "RE: Signs of Survival: China"
LAST EDITED ON 10-04-07 AT 04:15 AM (EST)

The ‘Physical’ Fire Signs are, as one would expect, fiery, indeed. They are enthusiastic and sometimes larger than life.

A Fire Sign is also an indicator of creativity. This Element manifests itself in unique ways, and those in its glow are usually wonderfully courageous, lively spirits: self-sufficient, spontaneous and possessing a tremendous zest for life. Strong, self-assured and fun, they are often an inspiration to others, certainly for their adherence to solid moral and religious ideals.

If there's a flip side to the Element, it can be that these Fire natives will be overly strident in getting their way. Call it bossy, even. These folks can come across rather forcefully.

Selfishness and an overdeveloped ego can also be seen as part of a fiery individual's shadowy side.

Positive Traits
Adventurous and energetic.
Pioneering and courageous.
Enthusiastic and confident.
Dynamic and quick-witted.
Negative Traits
Selfish and quick-tempered. Impulsive and impatient.
Foolhardy and daredevil.

The Aries Personality

Adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic and full of energy, Aries is a trailblazer: open to new ideas and a lover of freedom. These individuals welcome opposition and will not be diverted from their purposes except by their own impatience or boredom. The childlike enthusiasm of these entrepreneurs and revolutionaries is infectious, and their ability to rouse others interest in a project or cause is unparalleled. But the Mars-ruled are initiators -- not perpetuators.

Because their approach to life is somewhat simplistic, what Aries can accomplish without a lot of distracting nuances and complexities to slow him down is staggering. Don't, however, put them in a position where they'll have to deal with complicated emotions or with a problem requiring delicate handling or subtlety. They're simply not equipped for it.

And, much concerned with personal advancement and physical satisfaction (self-reliant but also self-centered), Aries do not work well under authority unless they, too, have subordinates.

In fact, they may be too self-sufficient and proud to acknowledge they have a boss and often take matters into their own hands (disregarding authority absolutely). Ask an Aries how many times he's been fired, and he'll probably tell you more than once.

In personal relationships Aries are frank, direct and candid: gregarious and generous friends. However, their immense energy can also make them aggressive and restless, argumentative, headstrong, quick-tempered and easily offended: of all the zodiac’s natives, an Aries will most readily haul off and punch a nose.

And while an Aries is not the least bit calculating (in most instances, he'll simply tell it like it is before he's had a chance to think about the consequences), he does crave admiration and praise. So that while he won’t usually lie (in contradiction of his straightforward nature), he'll often exaggerate the truth in his own favor or simply in order to stamp it with his individuality.

Intellectually, Aries are quick-witted, usually objective, and inspirationally optimistic: irreplaceable champions of lost causes and last-ditch stands. But they can also become extremists: foolhardy and dogmatic zealots whose enormous talents and vibrant personalities become a hindrance (if not a threat) to the welfare of the society in which they move.

ABOUT COURTNEY

Her Aries Sun/Sagittarius Moon Profile

These are fiery, passionate, dynamic and expansive individuals who are attracted to everything natural and have a genuine joy for living. Life to them is a journey of conquest, exploration, and self-discovery. And although they can be disconcertingly direct in their opinions and convictions, sharing their knowledge with others gives them real pleasure.

Possessing great vitality, their high spirits affect those they come in contact with (so that others become enthusiastic through their optimism).

And whatever their positions, their goals will usually involve developing and implementing plans. They love to initiate action. But, although these natives will usually act expediently and in good faith, they are seldom concerned with the practical results of their initiatives. Sustained focus, foresight, perseverance, patience and the ability to remain interested in down-to-earth realities are not their long suits. So that it is often left to others to finish the projects that Aries/Sagittarius began.

Jeff’s Take

“I really got a kick out of Courtney. I enjoyed her sarcasm, her extremely dry wit. She always had a comment about what was going on and it was almost always funny and simultaneously insightful. Courtney's not the kind of girl who wakes up and says, ‘Should we go catch fish?' She'll say, ‘I need a cup of coffee and a cigarette!' She admits she can be a
